    I just moved to Africa from the US in March and I'm going to be a 9th grader as well. Since I moved away from a lot of opportunities and in person resources like libraries with books in english and computers with wifi and printers basic stuff living here has done nothing but cause strain. Just last night my grandfather made me a deal that if I graduate school within 3 years he'd help me get back to the states when he retires. My situation is a way more chaotic but this was the short version but I have to homeschool myself which won't be the problem and I have some online resources but I want to graduate early and I need to make sure that everything I have will get me to that point. Plus my mom can't afford to pay for curriculum or classes and k-12 or the other texas program is out of the picture since we live in a different country

I’ve never heard of compass classroom. Living history is awesome!!! We love TGTB language arts and I believe we will be doing it in Highschool. My kids love it so much they want to. Nothing wrong wiv using iew info for writing. We often use a supplemental curriculum wen needed!!! I discus my kids independent work wiv them to often so we could continue that into high school. I hadn't heard of Dive until last week as I was trying to find a biology that didn't require you to do the lab physically. Our co-op plans fizzled out and I can't afford the high dollar microscope, labs, etc. And he did them a few years ago anyway for fun in a co-op. But I was so impressed. Last night I was researching the Algebra 1 as well. I already purchased Teaching textbooks but I love the idea of getting 3 years of math done in 2 so he can squeeze more into his highschool career as well as prep for CLEP.

    You should build up the literature by assigning some American literature to read per unit. Riot for Civil War, Unbroken for WWII, The Great Gatsby for 1920s, Fences for 1950’s, Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson, and the Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin would be some great choices. This way it could be an Honors course That way you can call it American Literature because that is something most colleges are looking for, and then when he does world history you can add to that years TGATB with some Brit lit picks. Some great Brit lit choices would be Romeo and Juliet, Pride and Prejudice, Jane Eyre, The Handmaids Tale, Sense and Sensibility, A Christmas Carol, Hamlet, Macbeth, 1984, Animal Farm, Emma, Harry Potter, A Midsummers Night Dream, Brave New World, Canterbury Tales, Oliver Twist and The Tempest.

    We love Dave Raymond's history!! My daughter did it in an abbreviated format in our old co-op in 7th grade, and we fell in love with it. She calls him "Davey Ray" as a term of affection, she enjoyed his history so much! :) This year, our schole group did American History again with some lessons from modernity, and it was again fabulous. @@OurHOMEschoolPlan depending on your son's comfort level with more complex language like you will see in the old primary documents, you may find it helpful to read through those with him as needed. When my daughter did it in 7th grade, I had to do some of the readings myself so I could discuss them with her and check in on her comprehension, but by 10th grade, she was completely independent with it. I actually really love the lectures and would listen to them while I was doing dishes, etc. and then I would have been able to easily discuss the content with her based on the lectures. Just as an fyi, the modernity lectures are significantly longer and the concepts are more philosophical and complex... so i wouldn't recommend that one before junior or senior year.

My husband thinks my daughter and I will not get along and have issues. She is 13 now, heading into 8th grade. • @OurHOMEschoolPlan

    @OurHOMEschoolPlan

    2 жыл бұрын

    I think the older you pull your kid out of school to homeschool, the harder the transition COULD be. I have a friend who just did it and her oldest she’s teaching is in 9th grade and that student was probably the least excited. Nevertheless, she understands why her mom did it and is submitting to her mom and dads decision. Homeschool definitely doesn’t mean no friends. But you have to be intentional about making sure that happens. As far as marching band, etc. there are definitely sacrifices. Those extracurricular activities come easier with school. But…there are many homeschool groups that do similar things. In my area, there is a huge homeschool network that plans activities like this. The difference is, parents have to be MORE involved in making it happen. There’s no more handing it all over to the school. Whether or not it’s right for you depends on your reasons for doing it. For me, our #1 reason is spiritual. So all the the “negatives” would have to outweigh my reason for doing it in the first place. And it never could. So why do you want to do this? And is that reason more important than participation in marching band? 😉 As far as you and your child getting along…..homeschool isn’t easy. But it’s also a beautiful opportunity to make your relationship with your child even more a priority. That relationship is more important than academics. So while there may be rebellion, there is also opportunity to parent more specifically and hopefully developing a deeper relationship than you could’ve had before. Im a Christian. Therefore, I think the Bible fully supports parents taking control of the raising of their children. And if the Lord is prodding you that way, and he’s giving you and your husband peace with moving ahead, then he will be with you on good days and bad days and help you through them. 😉. I did a video called “why you CAN homeschool high school” addressing this very thing. It might boost your confidence if that’s what you need. ;)

    I’m not sure if you will know the answer to this but…. My upcoming 7th grader is doing Saxon 8/7 which would lead to Shormann Alg 1 in 8th grade. That seems too early for Algebra 1 IMO. I’m trying to figure out the logistics and planning but I seems like I’m missing a step 🤦🏻‍♀️ Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

    If you’re worried about Alg 1 being too much for 8th grade (which IMO, if your child is ready, it’s not. I took alg in 8th grade decades ago through public school….so it’s not uncommon) BUT…if you don’t want to move that far ahead… Saxon doesn’t have Alg 1/2. It would be basically be similar to 8/7 but focuses a little more in per-alg concepts. OR Shormann has pre-alg also. You might reach out to the Shormann company and ask their opinion. My son just completed 8/7 and he’s ready for Algebra!

    @@OurHOMEschoolPlan thank you!! Yes, I’m a bit worried about algebra 1 in eighth grade but maybe he will be ready. I guess I need to see how 8/7 goes first and proceed from there. I guess I have advanced planner problems 🤣 thanks again!

    Ohhh I would being so stressed if I was going to go this route. I am not sure why you must be so strict since your state is so freedom friendly but I guess if he wants to go to a school that is very elite-then maybe that is necessary at this moment. I have followed a couple unschoolers who got into a good state college without any traditional classes nor SAT and are doing extremely well. I barely did a thing in highschool much less attended back in the day and managed to get a graduate degree with not much difficulty. I never did a math past Algebra 1... My husband is in tech, has only certifications and does better than most with a 4 year degree. His company and many others look at experience first. My masters was a waste in my opinion. I was brainwashed thou that college was everything and without it you would amount to nothing. LOL This was the only guidance I think I received. I guess we have two extremely different views of this.

    I made this video a year and half ago and have since opened my mind. I’m still learning. I have two older brothers who’ve graduated a total of 5 homeschoolers. So I am getting advice from them also. But I see what you’re saying. I did look up the admission requirements for the three closest colleges to us, and I mean, that did shape some of my decisions. My son didn’t quite sure what he wants to do yet, though.

    What exactly do you mean? It’s all workbooks that you write in and won’t reuse.
