My son was in 9th grade this past year! This was my first year homeschooling a high school and we stumbled through it together! As with anything, we learn things along the way and wish we had done things differently and that's what this homeschool mom wants to share in this video:
I have 10 lessons learned for homeschooling high school. Are they regrets? perhaps! They are definitely things I will be adjusting for next year and for the next homeschooled high schooler!
CHAPTERS:
00:59 Starting high school early
02:13 Creating a high school transcript
04:44 If your child plans to attend college...
08:25 When looking up your state's graduation requirements for homeschool....consider this!

We've never needed a transcript with course descriptions...but it sounds like a good idea. I would keep the course descriptions simple and short, though. A lot of college admissions aren't going to want to read every detail of every class. When they see a good SAT/ACT score and a good GPA and a good work & volunteering resume, and some stellar application essays, they're pretty happy. We've had six graduates--three of us were offered full-ride scholarship packages, and the others had enough scholarships that they were able to work and pay their own way through. Granted, I'm just thinking about "normal" universities, not all the exclusive ones, those are something else, I'm not that fancy. ;) Very smart for your son to work on keeping his resume updated throughout high school, and very good practice for adulthood! Good job assessing some of the issues with this year so that you can improve this next year. Keeping up with grading--yes! That's one of my mom's big tips for homeschoolers is to NEVER let grading pile up and always go over grading and corrections with your kids right away--she checks all daily work every day and checks all major projects the day that they are turned in.

I could have made this video emotionally. Highschool is so much more and so different. The work load jump is huge. Transcripts and grading make me feel inadequate to homeschool even though it's our tenth year. My daughter and I are learning together.

I don’t feel as prepared as I wanted to but I know God is with me and will fill in the gaps and will give us wisdom as we move through this year. I also think relationship is so important. Thank you!! And yea, relationship trumps the task list everyday!! Don’t be nervous about this. Just one step at a time. You’ll be learning right along with your 9th grader and you’ll probably make some mistakes. But it will all be ok. I’m thankful that you appreciate hearing the struggles bc it can be difficult to see moms on social media and wonder, “how come they have it together and I can’t seem to get it together?” So I’m glad I can be the one to say, “me! Over here….I’m, I don’t always have it all together. You’re not alone!” Every year of homeschooling, we learn how to adjust. And you know what? The next year has its own brand new set of challenges. Humility is a good place to be. I am not sufficient. But I know who is! 😉

Great video. We’re under an umbrella and submit attendance, grades, curriculum but not how we got to the grade. That would be a mess. I agree on the description,we use the course description when we purchase and log it in..backtracking is a pain. High school is fun! We also did foreign language (sign language) and physical science in 8th to count as credit.we had the “hat do you want to be” talk in 9th and health careers kept popping up. We had to do Biology and chemistry but then we are doing anatomy and physiology, medical terminology and emergency medicine…fun year!! Contact your local tech/ vocational school and see when they have an open house. The child can see, touch and hear all about several careers and see if anything spikes an interest.

Yes!! You can decide if the effort was worth a credit bc even in a modern school, there may be advanced classes or intermediate classes where the students go at a different paces. But both classes still receive their credit. I’m the same way with a planner, honestly. I’ve been using one FAIRLY consistently this year, but not bc I want to. Because it’s necessary for me to keep track of what I’m doing. Some weeks I can wing it. Others, I can’t AT ALL. So don’t beat yourself up about a planner either. 😉

Thanks for the information. I have a rising 8th grader and you have inspired me to do my research and make sure we are prepared for high school. You may already know this, but just to clarify for anyone else who is watching, not all home schools fall under the category of private school. Every state is different and how they classify home schools. In our state, there are no requirements for homeschool High School graduation. It is up to my husband and I to decide what we will require of our children in order for them to graduate. Of course it is wise to consider if you plan for your children to attend college what a college will look for in their transcript.

I hear you. I wish we could truly just educate the individual rather than making them take courses that we know in our hearts aren’t going to be needed for their future. I took all the sciences in high school and then went to college for business. Did I need chemistry? No. And I don’t remember a thing from it except some of the periodic table. If a child wants to be a doctor or even an engineer…..chemistry would be a must. But if they are certain they will do business or something of the sort….why do we have to do these? Same with math…..I could go on. 😉

Hi there, great video! Thanks for sharing. I just graduated my first child from our homeschool and I can relate to a lot of what you shared. You're right in saying that it isn't the number of projects a student completes, but rather the number of hours they work. We use "The Well-Trained Mind" to guide our homeschool and one of the authors, Susan Wise Bauer, is a writing professor at a university. In podcast on writing she recommended that, in the middle grades, students write short research papers in preparation for high school. Writing frequent, short research papers (one or two pages long) where they cite one or two sources, will give them the practice they need without overwhelming them. I did this with my daughter and when she reached high school, writing a longer research paper was easy for her and it didn't take very long. It's sounds like your son is hard-working and diligent. You've taught him some very important skills that will help him stand out and succeed wherever he goes.

We did a light world history course, but he reads a lot of historical fiction and watches the history Channel for fun, so that is his world history credit. Over tge 4 years here, he will help his dad build an office in the basement, help mop, dishes, wrap presents, cook......I know he will put in 120 hours of home ec. Get my drift? ;)

Hi Rachel! Such a good video that is so needed.. not enough of this kind of content on youtube. My daughter is entering her senior year and doing mostly all dual enrollment which she began last year. We have received such helpful feedback from the colleges she is interested in ... I am thinking I may make a video to share what we have learned through that process. You did a great job pointing out some really important stuff. Just a clarification for the hslda info on assigning credits: you can choose to use either the percentage of a curriculum option OR the hours option. So if your kid finished 80% of chemistry book but did it in 110 hours you can call that a credit OR you can just count hours in wh8ch case you need 120 -150 regardless of how much of a text they completed. For example, I made my own honors american lit program for my daughter and we had to document hours since I didn't have a published curriculum... but you can't do only 80% of hours IF you are using thr hours method. Hope that helps.

You can use reports and term papers for more than one subject. Count the content for the subject the report is for and count the grammar for the English/Language Arts grade. Videos you watch can include discussion and count as an assignment for one of the students subjects.

CLARIFYING WHAT A CREDIT IS: Somebody pointed this out to me and it makes sense. (There’s so much info out there….it can get confusing) 1 credit CAN BE a completed course. . So if your child is a fast worker….great! They can earn an early credit. (Or whatever credit the course says it’s worth….there are 1/2 credit courses also) But for those who need more time…. 1 credit is also 120 hours of work OR 75-80% completion of the curriculum! (If the curriculum is worth 1 credit) So I guess 80% of the hours (96 h) isn’t accurate. In my mind….I was thinking “what the CURRICULUM considers 96 hours, which is 80% completion) I hope that makes more sense and I’ll probably touch on that in another video at some point!

Most high school introductory computer courses only include a timed typing component (you could use typing.com) and a basic introduction to Microsoft office (word, excel, and PowerPoint). It would be pretty easy to piece together that credit just by tracking hours.

Yes, I believe you grade. It is a very self-directed, self-led curriculum. There is a student forum for students to ask questions or show their work for feedback from other students and sometimes the teachers. All lessons are powerpoint and/or video based but there are no other books required unless you want to purchase them as they have PDF's for worksheets, books, and links to any other videos related to the course.

Not all colleges want this resume. You do what you can which isn’t much when everywhere required the vaccine or clashes in religious or political beliefs or you can’t afford it. Well you can always do even just one year of junior college and get into college. But most just want the grades.

  • @OurHOMEschoolPlan

Depends on if you want your student to stand out for certain scholarships. These are also turned in FOR specific college scholarships. You don’t have to d a resume if you don’t want to. But I’ve been doing them a long time. We’ve gotten a lot of feedback from students who’ve used them and from the colleges who’ve received them on how well they market a student and make them memorable. But if you don’t want this, don’t do it. Nobody is telling you you have to make your student stand out. You can be like everybody else and do the minimum.

If they did 120-150 hours of high school level work, yes. That’s the early junior high credit I talked about that you said everybody was too “hyper focused” on. My son repeated LATIN 1 in 9th grade so it wouldn’t be ethical for me to count it twice. If I had thought about early credit, we would’ve done his 8th grade differently. But he used that year for the basics of the course and didn’t do all of the work for it bc he knew he was repeating it.

I don’t think you have to do HS credits in middle school. Not everyone is up for that. I did take college credits between my jr/sr year and into my sr year back in the “dark ages” when it wasn’t the thing it is now. It was helpful to lighten my load during college but not direly necessary.

A lot of great info here. However, these numbers are not all correct. For instance, she is talking about ACT not SAT scores. Hours for a class are 160 hours not 120. Full completion of hours is required while completion of books is not. If you are in Colorado, I highly suggest Homeschool Freedom Academy. Get someone to help you with record keeping. Start as you mean to go on with transcripts. Pick your top 5 colleges and look at their homeschool admissions requirements. They are quite often different from public and private school students. Pay attention to which sciences you take. You need official labs. Collaboration with other students etc. Specific sciences are also required. For specific computer courses, use Khan. It’s free and good quality.

The info. is different everywhere. I wonder if it changed because when I was in HSLDA's seminar at a homeschool conference, they said 120 hours. And that's also what "Well Trained Mind" says. But now on the HSLDA site, it says 150 hours, whereas before when I checked, 150 hours was an honors course.

Not all dual enrollment courses are automatically accepted. That would be a lot of work done for nothing if not accepted.
