9mm "Colt magazine" magwell adapter: pros, cons, problems, and fixes. 9mm AR / AR9

Today we take a look at my favorite way to convert a standard AR-15 lower to 9mm. These adapters are available from a number of websites and I found that they work very well, but may need a little hand-fitting.

    I said it before and I don't mind saying it again. THANK YOU. I had some difficulty putting my fors ar9 together. Then found your website. With the knowledge you share putting the next 3 ar9's together was easy and no stress. All 4 of our PCC'S have the same colt mag adapter as you show in the video. This video was well done, provided concise information and will be of great benefit to other ar9 enthusiasts who are just starting out.

    I like this style of adapter. Historically it was designed by a Colt engineer and Colt used it that design breifly but went back to the pin in blocks. Lots of companies make this design and even more sell them. The kind I like the most is from Rock River Arms.

    @@ARP_king5.56 the ejector rubs against the bcg a little so, you just need to bend it a few mm with a tool to clear the bcg. It’s fairly easy to do. The pro to this adapter is the last round bolt catch.

    Picked up a subscriber today. Thanks for the video. My adapter is a bit different, older I believe. It has only a single set screw near the top. I think I am going to drill a couple of holes to put the lower set screws in place.

  • @Blowback9

    Be careful not to drill all the way through - it's easy to do! Just a notch in the inside of the magwell will do the trick.

    I have the same adapter. However it does not mount the same. I had to remove the mag release to slide it in. Then reassemble the mag release. Bought about 8 years ago. So maybe its a older design. I have not had any problems at all. Love your channel by the way.

    I am in 100% agreement with you on the advantages of a Colt style mag over Glocks. Used to be you could not find 10 round Colt mags but now you can. I did try a set-screw type of insert and I think it's mandatory (pretty much) to dimple the metal with a drill bit to get a good bite. I tried a set-screw type from KAK and it just did not fit well - a lot of air between the side of the magwell and the insert. Perhaps another brand would have been better. I ended up getting a Hahn Precision insert that goes in from the top (have to remove the bolt catch). I also ended up using a CMMG ambi magazine release because it goes deeper into the magazine to hold it in place (CMMG seems to like expensive niche items). The MILSPEC release just barely holds the mag in place due to the added thickness of the adapter.

    Great video! It seems that if you use an adapter, colt mags are the way to go. If you use a dedicated lower, either works well.

    Absolutely! For Glock mags I tried a Glock adapter first. I sent it back and got a dedicated lower instead - best decision I could have made.

    No. The problem with DIY lowers is that it's easy for them to be out-of-spec which can cause a lot of problems. I'd recommend using a new stripped upper from any large manufacturer. One of my adapters is in a cheap Anderson lower - works great.

    Did you ever try the MEAN EndoMag®?

  • @Blowback9

    @Blowback9

    10 ай бұрын

    No, and I don't plan to. Having the ejector built into the magazine is a bad idea, IMHO. The standard process to clear any semi-auto firearm is to remove the mag and eject the chambered cartridge. Doing this with an EndoMag would leave the round in the chamber, which sets up the user for a negligent discharge.

    I just installed this mag block in my PSA lower and running the Matador 9 upper, installing was very easy but as soon as I ran through function checks I noticed failure to feed aswell as failure to extract/eject any help?

  • @Blowback9

    @Blowback9

    8 ай бұрын

    I don't have a matador yet to test. Ejection failures are usually due to the ejector alignment. Feed failures are usually due to the feed ramp or feed cone, but could be mag related if using cheap polymer Colt mags. That's where I would start. Check the "4 Steps to make (almost) any 9mm AR run 100%" video for tips.

  • @jcash0904

    Hey. I recently finished modifications to my matador arms montgo-9 so it would use colt mags, have last round bolt hold open using psa lower. You need to check the extractor and shim it for proper extraction. You may also need to shave some metal from the mag catch hole to lower how high the mag sits. I shortened my eject side feed ramp some also to give more room for the casing to exit. Your feed ramp could potentially be contacting the bolt carrier not allowing it to fully go into battery

    Yes, I tried one and sent it back. It moved the magazine release to an unfamiliar location for an AR, and the ejector was hardened so it couldn't be bent into proper position relative to the bolt without breaking.

    The endomag + this upper would make for a very easy conversion for a normal AR. Just need to be careful when clearing - the Mean Arms Endomag ejector is on the mag and makes clearing a little different.
