    Mike, you may remember Warren Turner. I remember him always saying: if you want to catch small fish, fish live baits in mid-water depths, if you want to catch large fish: fish cut baits on the bottom but at those same depths. I'm really thinking the larger spoons are similar to the cut baits, essentially what a dead or dying bait would look like to those larger fish. I've heard people say big fish are lazy. I don't think they are lazy. I think they are smarter/conditioned to let the little fish do the work and kill the bait and all they have to do is let the scraps come to them. Just my HO, but my brain is about the size of a fish's so that's what I will deduce 😁Love the videos, keep them coming. Love you , mean it, Jim B

    Your comment about your buddy holding the rod below the reel got me thinking (I always use left-handed cranking reels for jigging too). If his right hand is his dominant hand, he probably has more strength it that hand versus the other. That's two advantages of a left-handed cranking reels for jigging. first:you have a quicker response to a strike on the fall of the jig/spoon; second: your dominant hand can set the hook and give move power during the strike. The only problem or disadvantage would be you lose leverage to a really big fish but that is quickly solved by placing the non-reeling hand high up on the blank as the fish makes a run. Love the videos. Learning new stuff and understanding why old habits were started! PS-Just wanted make sure Tommy-Two-Tours got a proper attaboy for his service: Bravo Zulu, TTT!

    Thanks Joe!! We had to cut some time out for the video. Releasing all fish properly is a priority for us of course, but big girls like these get extra care. We pull them along slowly, in and out of gear until they start to fight us and swim off strongly. These fish over 40lbs took more time than the fight took. Big girls always need more time than the small fish. Im sure you know this. It’s crazy. Even if the fights were short. A 4 minute fight on a 10lber revives in around 20-30 seconds. A 4 minute fight on a 40lber revives in up to 8-10 minutes. We gave these big girls plenty of time. Quite a bit more time than you see in the video. I think it’s important that we set a good example because we have a large audience. Actions always speak louder than words. Thanks for the comment brother!!!

Leaving fish to find fish has its risks, but I knew we could always go back to the tiny bait schools of need be. Stripers are the most selective fish I’ve ever seen when water is clear. Once they lock in on a particular size, color, shape, and behavior they almost become blind to anything else. Thanks again for your support!👍👍

    Thanks brother! I’ve tried countless rods and ended up designing my signature slow pitch rods with Rich Coulson. They are made specifically for these spoons. Super light. Super balanced with added weight system to the butts that make the tip feather light. They have super high end Rainshadow carbon composite blanks and carbon fiber grips so you feel EVERYTHING. Rich’s email is in the description if you’d like to order one. With that being said, these rods aren’t in everyone’s budget. If that’s the case you can get this model ugly Stik amzn.to/3GMcqq8. 6’ medium power. It’s not light. It’s not balanced. It won’t be as comfortable and will not be sensitive, but it is affordable and they WILL catch fish. 👍

    Thanks brother!! I know exactly what you mean. I used to spend every Dec and Jan there. You get lots of sand eel schools there. I used regular slow pitch spoons with good success, but the 4” lake fork spoon will probably slay over there. I mainly fish just off the channel edges in 20-30 ft of water drifting eels and jigging those spoons whenever I marked bait schools under me. 1 spoon is fine for those depths, but I like a little scope out when jigging flutter spoons. If you would rather be straight up and down gluing two together will be perfect 👍 Thanks again for your support!!

  • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS

    @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS

    6 ай бұрын

    Yeah man. I always hold my breath when they lift big fish like that😂. I’m trying not to micromanage everyone, but a netting video is on the horizon 🤣. I don’t know where the hardware rumors started. I’m guessing one of the knock-off companies, or someone misunderstanding me when I talk about adding an additional swivel above the hook. Pause the video when Tommy is holding the fish on his lap and check out the hook on that spoon. It’s a thick monster. All of the hardware is high quality. You can choose saltwater hooks or freshwater. (Swivels and rings are all saltwater on both) I prefer the freshwater hooks even in salt. The points are way thinner and sharper. They hone very easily compared to the coated salt water hooks. I also avoid “stainless or coated” hooks on anything. If you break a fish off those hooks are not going anywhere soon. If a big girl is hooked in the throat and breaks off I want the hook to rust out asap. I also have tons of footage of us lifting 20lb plus fish into the boat by holding just the spoon. I don’t ever see them bending. They are stamped from solid brass to not be so heavy like the stainless spoons I see some companies make now. Those heavy stainless ones are a nightmare on your shoulder. WAY too heavy for Striped bass. I want the slowest flutter possible. Most of our videos are in shallow water. 15ft to 30ft. where a lighter spoon is king!! Thanks for your comment brother!

    @@joebradley3532 hey Joe!! I’m not familiar with all the Bull Bay models, but you want a composite model (not graphite) with a slow action. In probably medium power rating or whatever power rating they have for 20-30lb line. 👍👍. If you want to try a Striper Stealth rod instead, use my code SMEDLEY5 to save some money. I helped design them and they are perfect for Bait fishing. They are quite a bit more affordable too. Link is in the description www.catchthefever.com. Code: Smedley5. Let me know if I can help further 👍👍👍😁

    😝😝😝😜😜. 30 different people ask me that same question after a video posts. See my dilemma? 😂. You gotta call ME. Don’t forget, the last 2 times Tommy invited you, you couldn’t go. Just sayin 😁. Text Tommy in April. Don’t forget.
