Did you say the call takers answer the calls first then transfer to the 911 dispatcher?

Not really, usually Calltakers process the calls and post it to the system which the Dispatchers are constantly observing and are notified of, so they are able to send it out while the Calltaker is still on the phone if necessary. Typically a hot call is entered with like minimal info, but the most important info, and then it is updated as the call goes on. So many may think the "dispatcher" who is really the calltaker isn't doing anything or sending anyone or yada yada, but really they are typing and updating the initial call, and the Dispatcher is actually the one on the radio relaying the updates to responders.

@@videofirstime actually, call takers are dispatchers , this other person fails to mention. Dispatchers often take turns being call takers or use newer people as call takers for training purposes. For our dispatch we are a small department with 3 pods of 4 stations, we are all in the same room and can pretty much hear everyone talking. But call taker takes the call while another dispatcher is dispatching units immediately to that location as soon as it’s given . But a call taker cannot always answer every call so it goes to the next dispatcher.

Sorry, but this ratteling off the text on the cue card does NOTHING for the caller. "Ifitssafetodosopleaseturnyour..." What?!? I realise the caller was apparently calm, amazingly calm for having encountered a freshly overturned vehicle with an occupant that is bleeding from the face. But he's still in a very unusual situation and looks to you for guidance. So speak slowly, clearly and with an instructive tone. Ask if they understood and let them give feedback. ("Okay, are you out of the road now? Great! Turn on your harzads and get to the side of the road! Tell me if you're there.")

Joseph Pellegrino So how would you do it differently? I'm not outright assuming you're stupid, but as someone who does this job, I'd love to know what you think a better way to do it would be, as we stream line it as much as possible. Please keep in mind before your suggestion that people are reluctant to vote for additional taxes for us to upgrade, so assuming magic new computers like on CSI could fix the problem is not an acceptable answer.

Joseph Pellegrino You do realize that within the first minute the dispatcher had sent an ambulance and whatever else, everything after that was him just finding out what happened so he could update the first responders on their way.
