jademarissa I bet doctors regret becoming doctors. The medical field is very bad nowadays, actually. You don't get paid as much as you should and it's very stressful. They treat you like crap if you're a nurse or midwife or something. The pay for the amount of hours you work is horrible.

They deserve all the respect. Can’t imagine how hard it must be to say to a patient they can’t help them. Doctors really develop thick skin for this because if you can’t handle that it’s impossible so amen to them.

My father, my mom, my sister, my brother are in the medical field and have to work and study really hard. I can't really remember a time where I haven't seen my sister studying. This is not for me, but I admire them all.

I think what a lot of people need to realise is that the NHS isn't shit, it's the funding and decisions made by under-qualified people that is shit

yes, it is wonderful. I hate when people look down on you for attending public hospitals, like the physicians aren't good enough or something. I've had four surgeries on my back through the nhs and if it wasn't for that I would be in great debt. I'm grateful for my health.

I'm from the US, and it's nice to see that people appreciate that there's a safety net there for them. Here, if you lose your job for any reason (like calling out sick), you have no insurance. It's over. If you're lucky, you'll find a new job immediately and only go without any health care at all for 90 days. Some of us aren't that lucky. I heard a man talk about his wife, who died of cancer, not being able to get treatment for cancer until they sold their house and car and put that money toward treatment, and then, finally, the government was willing to help. It's stayed with me for years. I'm glad that you were able to use the services available to you, and I hope you're doing well now =).

Penguinnn 4life you mustn’t view it in that way. I am a young woman who has lost a baby and I can safely say it was the hardest things I’ve ever experienced. It is now a year and a half on and it still hasn’t left me. Not a day goes by where I don’t think about it, so it’s not ‘just life’ if you’d experienced it you’d know, but to bracket it in that way I’d just offensive.

Well, doctors are absolutely great. But shout out all the NHS staff who don't don't get much praise. My parents work for the NHS, my mum is a nurse and my dad is a paramedic. They've both told me stories of things that even doctors don't see..Its absolutely horrific and it can have a huge impact on the people who need to deal with these situations.

I agree that all the NHS staff (like your parents) definitely deserve praise and recognition. I will say though, that it seems to me doctors (especially junior doctors) get less and this one programme is a good way to counter that. Nurses are (rightly) beloved by the British public for the good they do, and there are lots of good programmes on TV about the amazing work that paramedics do.

My mum once told me how annoying it is when you specialise in idk, pediatrics and someone asks you about a stabbing pain in their ear and you have to politely explain you don't have a clue.

Katie Redhead a good doctor should know why your ear hurts, even if they're a pediatrician. They all have to go to med school for the same amount of time and take the same test to graduate. Children are people and have ear pain, so knowing why an adult would, wouldn't be that different. Now if you're asking your primary care doctor about what dose of transplant meds you should take, he/she is not going to have a clue!

Mostly patient came with a lot of complaints. If you’re not specialize in those areas they are asking, you can always reffers them to another specialist. For example : patient came to cardiologist but they are asking why they have patch in their skin, you can reffers them to dermatologist to get it checked.

My parents moved here when I was 2 from Somalia. I'm almost done with medical school and look forward to serving in the NHS! I'm thankful to the people of this country for welcoming my family.

ArtemisDD I'm in the 5th year of medschool in Morocco, 7 more years to become a specialist in surgery ( 5 for a medical specialty but I like surgery ) I never knew what burnout out and stress mean until I started medical studies, I lost a lot of friends because I don't always have time to hang out and attend to bithdays and parties, I lost my social life, we don't get to have any holidays the whole school year, like we finish the exams on a monday and start the new semester tuesday.. it's exhausting, it literally consumes you, you spend the best years of your life studying.. Good luck to you and to all the medstudents around the world, we understand each others strugles, and because of that all doctors deserve nothing but respect, they really went through a lot to get to where they are now. Have a nice day.

This is why so many of our doctors are going over to New Zealand (well, there is also your amazing country!!) If you ask the public in polls, doctors do generally score very highly in the list of professions in terms of trust and respect, probably in the top three. However, you don't always actually get treated that way by individual members of the public. You certainly don't get treated like that by managers, politicians and the like. I think that's what they are referring to.

@@Unknown8033 oops this is 8 months ago but it's because surgeons were traditionally butchers who helped physicians lop off limbs that need to be amputated (there wasn't much else you could do back then without antibiotics etc.)

i lived in the UK - the NHS is the best. British ppl often have no idea how great it is.

British doctors are just fantastic! Much love out to them for their immense hard work and dedication.

I spent most of my life in the hospital, over 150 days a year from infant till I was 20, and you form really close relationships with the doctors and nurses to the point they are family. You grow up with them around you and appreciate that their working as hard as they can to help you. Makes me angry when I see people disrespect them because I know how hard they work. I'd come in at 3am to the ER with my mom, and as soon as my doctor or favorite nurse knew I was there, they'd often come into work just to be on my case so I wouldn't be scared and they could get me settle into my room on the inpatient unit.

I'm a nurse and I'm so greatful for our doctors here in the U.K. they're great colleagues.

They all look so tired lmao

Why is nobody talking aboUT HOW HANDSOME THE GUY AT 3:31 is?!

Thank you doctors and nurses in Australia for being so amazing, when I was 6 I had the my worst asthma attack I couldn’t breathe at all and I was almost completely unconscious, my father rushed me into the hospital and said that I was having a severe asthma attack and the nurses and doctors went straight into action to help me, they were amazing so thank you!

So truly grateful for the NHS and all the amazing doctors, nurses, surgeons, and midwives. If it wasn't for all of them combined I don't know how I could've paid for my son's heart surgeries and checks and everything else he has been through. The nurses supported my family and I physically and emotionally. I got so angry the other week when students were out fundraising for our local hospital to refurbish and expand the A&E facility because things like that shouldn't be happening. Health and education should be top of the list.

I just want to take the time to say I appreciate you all. Every part of the team that makes the hospital tick. You are all awesome. Xxx

Pandastic Panda i haven't worked in health care for long, but I feel like you harden with time. When you've seen a lot of sadness and misery you learn how to not get too emotional about every sad case. That being said, the baby story is pretty brutal. Maybe she's had time to deal with it and talked to others about it, and gotten over it eventually?

Well, she did cry about it at the time, but time also gives some protection against giving in to emotions. You do eventually learn to put on a professional doctor face (most of the time, anyway) because generally speaking, patients don't want to see their doctors bawling, they'd rather see them in control of the situation. The best doctors somehow manage to do this restraint of their emotions while letting enough show through to convey empathy and compassion.

As an American, it really frustrates me when I hear about doctors and nurses and hospital staff being treated so poorly, or the politicians being upset about the NHS. It's something that's desperately needed over here, and there's a country that has it and is completely taking it for granted.

I didn't realize you doctors pay a price for living in a country that provides free healthcare. Here in (backwrds) America the doctors get wealthy but many people suffer and die because they don't have healthcare. You British doctors deserve appreciation for what you do. American politicians deserve a kick in the backside.

When I was around 4 or 5 years old I told my mum that the worst job anyone could have was the person to tell the parents that their child's going to die. She works in a children's intensive care unit so she does that almost daily and she says that it is the most mentally draining thing a person can do. I thank her and all the other doctors and nurses. You are a blessing to this world

It's not an excuse I guess, but it's probably due to being generally overworked, multi-multi-tasking (yes I did write multi twice). If you see how often a FY1 doctor's bleep goes off when they're doing ward cover on-call, you'll see how handwriting goes out of the window. More senior doctors don't have that excuse but I guess by then it's ingrained habit.

Any person who's brain works more quickly than their hand has shite penmanship. It isn't only doctors. They're just more notorious because they hand out written prescriptions. Generally you're not face to face with the penmanship of a CEO, which is normally equally atrocious.

I'm so very grateful that people do choose to become doctors, but I don't understand how they cope. I couldn't do their job - poor treatment, paycuts left right and centre, no respect from the public, press constantly attacking you, ridiculous unsafe working hours, crippling student debt, badly run hospitals... Hats off to you all for battling through to help people!

youngest dr can be 23 years old, so unless they lok like a teen then they dont look too younge to be drs

The GMC course of training is different from the US; there are no "residents". In the UK, the shortest (and most common) route is to leave school at 18 (or sometimes 17 if, like me, you're from Scotland) before studying medicine at university for either 5 or 6 years. At the minimum age of 22 you then become a Foundation Year 1 (FY1) doctor, followed by FY2, and then you begin to specialise, which can take anywhere between 3 years (for a GP) to maybe 12 years, depending on your speciality and assuming you work full time with no years out. You then become a consultant in your field. And as a side note, when I did work experience at my local hospital, one of the doctors said she used to get annoyed at patients telling her she looked too young to be a doctor... that is, until they stopped saying it.

For anyone wondering why Miss Parkar is Miss rather than Doctor it's because she must be a consultant surgeon. Top ranking UK surgeons get called by their pre degree title.

I dont know about the UK but here in switzerland if youre licenced to be a doctor youre not called "dr. Med". You only get "doctor" in front of your name if you did your doctor's thesis which isnt required to be a medical practitioner. :) maybe its the same in the uk...

Wow that's confusing. So how do you know the difference between Miss Smith the top surgeon and Miss Smith the woman who brings the meals around to the patients when they order it? I definitely prefer all of my doctors be called Doctor, the nurses are nurses (RN, BSN, MSN), and the Patient Care Assistants are just called by their first name as they usually just do blood draws, check vitals, dressing changes, etc.

I am 13 but ever since in I was 4 years old I wanted to be a doctor. I can't wait 😄

Souks onlyjust I'm sorry are you a nurse? Have you experienced this unfairness as a nurse? Yes nurses do "take the craps", just like doctors and lab & radiology technicians. Hey, you can't claim that nurses are the only one working their asses off buddy. Instructions from doctors? Again, wrong. There's a thing called roles and working as a team. With each person knowing their roles and playing their parts in the team, you get a good working environment with the goal to save patients. Hey, why don't you stop this whole "nurses work way harder but no one cares about them" because the nurses i know are happy as hell with their jobs. Guess who also work hard and get

Um, to the silver fox, you can come live with me in America. Also, as an American that lived in the U.K. for a long while, I was so appreciative of the NHS. It's a great thing and I was so thankful.

Id move if I was a doctor in the NHS. You get paid hundreds of thousands to over a million per year over in USA.

Most doctors in the US make nowhere near that. I'm a doctor in the US and am 5 years out, and if up you take my salary and divide it by the hours worked, I make $6.25 per hour, which is less than minimum wage. And for that I have to work 60-80 hours per week, and have almost $500,000 in student loans. I accrue more interest on my student loans every year than I make before taxes. Not to mention I had to put my life on hold while in training, which took 14 years of college/grad school/medical school/residency. There are a few doctors that make 300,000 plus, and it is extremely rare to make a million or more. Most doctors in the US are primary care providers and make less than 120,000 per year.

David Cameron The hours are ridiculous but are you doing before or after taxes, with or without benefits, and with or without paying for malpractice insurance when you talk about your salary? My only knowledge is from what my brother tells me who is a specialized surgeon and who thankful got a full ride in medical school and literally less then $10,000 in debt in undergrad (UCLA). I'm looking at about around $150,000 of debt and some with 7% interest by the time I'm done with grad school. My advice is to buy a house with 2-3% down and get a loan greater then the house to pay off the high interest rate student loans. Make sure to get room mates to make your mortgage payment low then after a couple of years remortgage your house with a 20% down payment so you will pay less in your monthly payments cause your lower risk. My uncle does real estate so I've been crunching the numbers if I make slightly less then $100,000 a year.

Thank you, doctor's, thank you. I don't want to think where we would be without you.

The hardest is not losing a patient, the hardest is not knowing if you did all your could or if you did something wrong and not knowing, because medicine is not black and white, no strict rules and guidelines, and it all you can think about "what if" for a while
