9 Interior Design Mistakes That I Can't Stand! | Small Artwork, Faux Olive Trees, Unlit Candles
Does your boyfriend, husband, wife, or girlfriend do something that just rubs you the wrong way? As in, they do something that's a total turn off? Well, that's called an ICK and I have a few when It comes to interior design! There are some interior design mistakes, habits, and trends that just rub me the wrong way, so in today's video, we're chatting about just that. This video is about 9 of my interior design pet peeves!!!!!!
Think of this video as a rant/me sharing what we're all thinking but are too polite to say, haha! The most important takeaway from this video is that we all have different perspective when it comes to interior design styles, trends, and habits. Just because I like something doesn't mean that you have to and vice versa and I absolutely love the discourse that this generates!
What are your design pet peeves? I can't wait to hear what your interior design pet peeves are down in the comments!

I’m so glad you mentioned unfinished backing on furniture. It amazes me how much something can cost, and the company can’t be bothered to add a backing. It makes it look so cheap even if it costs 3 thousand dollars. It would be like buying a car and getting exposed foam seats to sit on. No one would enjoy or appreciate that.

150% agree the ICK of no backing, or the flimsy backing that isn't finished. I had asked a KZreadr why they didn't paint/stain the backs of their DIY flips. Their response was that most people place their furniture against the wall. No No No. I want it finished so that I can place it anywhere in the room. I also have an issue of the under parts of furniture isn't finished. You're playing around on the floor and you look up. Beautiful side table detailed, yet the underside still has paint from the previous owner, crayon markings etc... you get the point. I want 360 degree beauty. OK rant over.

@@lovealwaysmom I totally agree with you! When I redo my own stuff, I do all surfaces so it's good from all angles!
A stainless steel surface is the cleanest surface you can work on. It’s probably the safest choice in terms of cleanliness for a sink. So it’s a design element I’m willing to work around. You can match it up with faucets soap dispensers etc or just ignore it and design around it and know it’s your best choice for cleanliness. Nothing beats it. It’s why restaurants use it for countertops in the kitchen.

@firebirdtelevision175

I dunno, I kind of disagree. I had stainless steel for 25ish years and found it harder to care for than our new granite polymer sink. When you have hard water and stainless steel, the scrubbing causes lots of scratches, leading to more frequent scrubbing. Our current sink cleans much easier with disinfectant and a soft rag. No more hard scrubbing and way prettier.
@WomanRoaring

@@EmeraldMara85 my grams house had a white porcelain enamel sink, it was never stained. we'd use comet to clean it, her house was built in the 60s and we remodeled it after she passed and the sink was still white and stain free in 2010. my mom would dye her hair and use that sink to rinse it all the time, never got stained. we ate a lot of spaghetti and the sauce never stained the sink. you just have to use the right cleaner and don't let tomato sit, rinse that right away.
A huge "YES!" to if you are going to spend the money then use the item. Whether it is a candle, rug, or those lovely linens that our mothers said are too nice, just use them and enjoy them. Fires, floods, tornadoes and roommates happen. And 100 years from now they will either be in a thrift store or a landfill. Certainly take care of your belongings. But in the end it's just stuff. Don't love something that can't love you back.
One of my biggest pet peeves is loose cushions that are not reversible. They've used some cheap fabric on the back instead of fully covering it. I'd gladly pay more to have it fully covered. And it's not just IKEA doing this!

@carriebutler1261

Also I hate cushions attached at the top to the back of the sofa so you can never flip the cushion. They are hideous looking and usually cheap! At least if it’s not finished on both sides you have the option, though tedious, of unzipping the cover and removing the cushion and flipping it over that way. I have a chair from West Elm (Andes chair) that is only finished on one side and this is my only option if I need to flip the cushion.
A good rule of thumb is to view a 6 foot art piece from 6 feet away, a 3 foot piece 3 feet away etc etc… if you have a tiny piece of art it needs to go in an intimate or small space like a bathroom, walk in closet, or nook. Otherwise you’re viewing it from too far away

For the olive tree lovers and keepers, just use some acrylic paint for the back of the leaves, it might be time consuming but it will look so much better. Make sure the green color you use for the back of the leaves is not the same as the front so it'll look more natural, check a pic of olive leaves on line so get a good idea of the green you need; mix paints if needed to get the green you want. 😊 Happy Olive tree keeping 🙆😁

My biggest pet peeve is when *throw pillows* have a nice design or fabric on the *front* and a plain, or worse, plain *nin-matching* colored fabric on the back. I realize it's a cost cutting measure for the companies that make the pillows, but I will only get pillows that have the same thing on both sides.
My biggest pet peeve is a home filled to the nines with every decor style in tiny rooms! Someone I know home is so cluttered with all the beautiful & expensive stuff that you can barely move about without fear of knocking something over. It's never a comfortable visit, and I feel like I've walked into a home goods store and should be shopping there instead! I mean, it just looks like furniture store staging. Complete bedroom sets, living room sets- all the things, every room including the kitchen and bathrooms.
I saw a literal postage-stamp sized price of art in an apartment in Paris … and it was gorgeous. An actual (but sizable) postage stamp, generously matted and beautifully framed, approximately 14 wide/12 tall as I recall. But it was a small apartment, a small wall, and it invited up-close viewing.

The thing is that Paris apartments are tiny. So the postage stamp would be right up in your face, so tiny is perfect. It's about scale for the space.
Yes the unfinished furniture in the back is an ick for me. Especially when you're paying high prices. I recently bought anew bed frame and I was deciding between Arhaus and Pottery Barn and what pushed me to Arhaus is the headboard of bed is finished in the back and Pottery Barn's was not and the only reason I knew the PB headboard was unfinished was because I saw it in store. There was zero mention on the website! With such an expensive bed you need to give people the option of floating their furniture period.

That’s why I have my art professionally hung by a gallery worker who understands substantial pieces of art and that you don’t want the small ones to get lost on a large wall. It’s definitely worth the money for a few hours of their time and in major cities the top galleries can recommend people who actually know art.

@@KivaBrent @medora kea Please don't see art just as decoration. Real art worth its money if you like it, just find the right place to put it! Maybe use another frame or use a gallery wall for smaller pieces. But please don't speak of art when it's just a decoration hanging on your wall (maybe just filling a gap) and has nothing meaningfull to you.
I remember when I was just starting out, I bought a stereo cabinet (yes we had stereos then 😆) and it had a finished back. Unusual for a stereo cabinet and I loved it. It's tall-ish and square, and because it's well-made, I have repaired and updated it as needed. I still have it 40 years later and I'm using it for my dog's stuff (clothes, food, grooming supplies.) It's so versatile, and yes, it's currently freestanding in the room near a wall.

The great thing about interior design is that while there are general proportions and color mixes that most people agree on, it can be an expression of a person’s personal taste, just like clothing. Several of these seem to be of the “not wrong per se but I hate it” variety.

My hates are”hacks” to make your space look designer. Things like the chop on pillows, drapes hung from the ceiling, and the rug sizing. Among others…
I have a senior dog who is starting to have issues. My rug is going to stay a floater so I can clean it easily. Also is a place for my elder pup to have a place where he can grip his feet to stand up. So my rug does have a friend and is a a good friend back to my pup. So it floats!

You’re 100% on with that Mona Lisa observation! That was the first thing that popped into my head when I saw the thumbnail! I’ve seen it in person and honestly it gives exactly these vibes- seeing something that feels too small for the space gives a feeling of it being underwhelming. To the extent you almost can enjoy the Mono Lisa more just by looking at a good quality picture online! (IMO you’re not missing anything since IRL there’s a permanent queue so you can’t just stand and look, you’re very aware of the line of people waiting behind you 🥵). I spent a long time trying to make different art pieces work and eventually figured out it wasn’t the pieces it was the size. I save my smaller pieces for a gallery wall in a spot where people might be waiting for a minute- like by the doorway- if there was a way to make a small picture on a regular sized wall look good I’m sure I would have found it cos I really tried 😂👌
Lol seeing the Mona Lisa was one of the most underwhelming experiences of my life 🤣

Welcome!!! Thank you so much :) 💕
Thank you so much for the information about the faux olive trees. I have been searching online for weeks trying to find one that looks real and has great reviews. Thank you for saving me money and additional time searching for something that's not out there because I'm now done with the search Also, the unfinished backings on furniture, I remember when companies only seemed to put those cheap cardboard-like backings on children's chests of drawers. I would call the company to complain when the nails wouldn't hold the backing in place and they would actually send a wood-like replacement. I just never could understand and I still don't understand why it's not only still being done with less expensive pieces but the more expensive pieces as well. Now, when that happens, my husband will cut a piece of wood and attach it to the back of these rip-off pieces. By doing this, it actually makes for a much sturdier piece of furniture. You also don't have to worry about the furniture tipping over as much, either because now it actually has some weight to it.
So glad you mentioned unfinished backing. I went to Ikea, 2 or 3 yrs ago, purchased this piece of furnture and there was no Backing whatsover, i was like 🤔🤔, oh no, i went to home depot to purchased piece of lumber to cover the back and it looks much better. 🤪😊. Tyvm, kiva for the video, EXCELLENT !!!🥰😍
I don't buy super expensive candles because I probably wouldn't burn them. I used to only buy Target/Walmart/Amazon candles, but I did allow myself to upgrade to nice candles from a local small business. They have a better throw and come in gorgeous reusable containers, so the cost probably balances out.

Omg i had never even thought about how annoying the unfinished furniture thing is but YES. 100% agree. My desk is L shaped and i actually like having it in the middle of the room so I can put another side table on the side of it (making it almost T shaped i guess) but!!! She's (vaguely) referencing the podcast "Were You Raised By Wolves" April 19, 2021 where they teach you etiquette and lifestyle habits that prevent people from wondering if you were raised by wolves lol. _Here's a snippet...._ *Nick:* So for today's amuse-bouche, I want to talk about displaying candles in your home. *Leah:* Mm! *Nick:* Specifically, there's a very specific rule about this. And this is one of those rules that if you don't know the rule, it's not gonna bother you or hit your radar, but if you know this rule, it will always bother you. So I want to just let everybody know. So that we're all on the same page. *Leah:* So that we can all be bothered. [laughs] *Nick:* Right! So the rule is that you can never have fresh candles on display. You always have to blacken the wicks first. So if you buy new candles and you put it in a candelabra and you set it on the side table, you have to light them for, you know, a hot second just to get the wicks black. *Leah:* What is the reasoning? *Nick:* So Miss Manners explains it as, like, the rule is to, quote, "Indicate that the candles are not being used for show only." Which anytime you kind of have something that's just for show, I guess that's kind of considered bad etiquette. Like guest soap? You know, like the decorative soap in the guest bathroom that you're not allowed to use. I think that's technically considered improper because, like, why are you offering something to guests that they can't actually use? So I think there's that similar idea with the wicks. Also, I was looking deeper into this, though, and there's this etiquette school in Charleston, and they say that when electricity was new, not everyone had it, and only wealthy people could have it. And so if you went to a wealthy person's house, they would blacken the wicks on the candles so you wouldn't necessarily know if they had electricity or not. It was to sort of be more "of the people," and not, like, show off or be ostentatious. _They continue giving more reasons and background, you can read the full transcript here:_ www.wereyouraisedbywolves.com/being-late-for-surprise-parties-sending-provocative-selfies-lighting-candles-and-more/

Grew up in a house with a room we never ever were allowed to enter. If we walked in our foot prints would be on the carpet so then we were caught and had to vacuum to prints out

I love all your decor content BUT I love your humor so so much!
Had a white sink several years ago. It was beautiful. It was also a constant cleaning chore.
$400 candles?! My max for a candle is $20 smh that's insane.

Agreed! Some people have more money than sense (or scents in this case!)
I just subscribed because you are so darn real! I have a strong feeling we don’t even like the same styles (I don’t like modern anything), but I loved this video and loved your presentation and expression of opinions! Can’t wait to see more ❤
I agree with you about having furniture finished. Great advise on today’s video. Thanks ❤😂
Thanks!!! for your honesty about the olive tree
Kiva, you never disappoint! You are so hilarious and provide education all at the same time! This is definitely your lane! Praying for you to have a tv show in the near future!🙏🏼🙏🏼❤️🙏🏼🙏🏼❤️🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼❤️🙏🏼🙏🏼❤️🙏🏼🙏🏼❤️🙏🏼🙏🏼❤️🙏🏼❤️🙏🏼🙏🏼❤️🙏🏼🙏🏼❤️🙏🏼❤️🙏🏼🙏🏼❤️❤️🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼❤️❤️❤️🙏🏼❤️🙏🏼❤️🙏🏼
My pet peeve…..the olive trees…went to Greece. None here look like the ones in GREECE !! Drives me crazy!!
My biggest ick has to be throw pillows with sewn on pillow covers. Why can’t all pillow covers be removable. I wish places would have the option of selling pillow covers by themselves. I have too many pillows lying around
I agree! Enjoy the things!!
Electrical cords or cable cords. Drive me bonkers!
Kiva, you're on a roll today! Bravo!
Am with you in most of what you say - except, for backless furniture. I LOVE the fact that the bookcase exposes the continuum of the wall color and blends in so nicely with the rest of the decor, rather than plunking itself down like some monolith with its unnecessary backing. Just, sayin'.
We have a black sink, too. I absolutely love it. I have lived in rural areas most of my life and grew tired of scrubbing hard water stains 2, sometimes 3, times a week. The black sink comes clean with some microban and a soft rag. It's glorious!
I love the colorful blue, yellow, pink artwork just to the left of you in this video 😍. Can you please share some info about it?
What a great point about finishing the furniture!

Are you feeling any better? I hope so!!! Thanks for being here, Drama Queen Kim 💕.
I like your videos. In Scandinavia, people are a little more practical though, so you can not find to many large rugs. Because here you should benefit from the use of the rug, not your furniture 😁. We can't find those olive trees either.
I just found your site today and I love it! Great sense of style, suggestions, and humor... a must view and subscribe.
Wow, so many relevant nuggets of practical information packed into this video. Can’t believe I didn’t find the channel sooner. Would love to see an episode on styling with plants. There are statement plants, and accent plants. In my opinion, foliage and their requisite pots and containers can serve as pieces of art. They have the power to enhance, or detract from the environment. Fake plants are a no go, and always look tacky in my opinion. If you don’t have a green thumb, another option is to cut branches of trees/bushes in your immediate environment that you love biweekly, and use those instead.
I truly enjoyed and support your venting!
LOVE this video! Thanks, Kiva. YES - finish the back of the furniture~
Oh no! Not the faux olive tree! I love mine! I didn’t know $500 candles were a thing! 😳
My home decor ick is when someone over does decor. Like every square inch of their home has decor and it just overwhelms your eye because there’s no natural flow.

This video spoke to me! I am having such a hard time finding a picture light for a piece of artwork that I have that is 60" wide. Thanks for the guidance!
Subscribed as you are right in every aspect of your presentation. Agree! Love you overall vibe as well.

Welcome!! Thank you so much! :)
You are spot on. Glad I came across your channel.
Love your content! Agree. Grew up in a furniture store and I’m aware of the markups on furniture and lamps. The very least the furniture makers should finish the piece of furniture! So many more options for use thus upping your satisfaction and likely getting your repeat business
Your hilarious. Dashing 2 miles around the table. 😂 Also side note It boils my blood to see those micro art works.
WOW! This has to be the best video you've ever put out. It look like you really enjoyed it!

Hello my friend . I hope you are fine I would be happy if you visit my channel if you are interested in villa interior design
You just make me chuckle, love your content
Great content as usual! Thanks Kiva!
Ooh, loving those spectacles on you, so cute!
Love your rug comments. I participate on a channel where others ask random strangers decorating advice. Yes, this is a strange way to decorate your home. Anyway, my rug comment to them is, "If you cannot afford a LARGE enough area rug go to your carpet store's discount area and buy a length of broadloom. Then have it bound. Such a simple solution for a tight budget.

What is broadloom
I agree the back of furniture unfinished is sad!
So I’m guessing that I’m not the only person who gets out a magnifying glass to try to “sense” whether I’m seeing a back to the bookcase that I want to buy online! Even if they gave me the option to pay an up charge to get the back finished I’ll pay it!
