When I redid my flat four years ago, I thought about the next buyer. That's because I knew then that this will be a temporary home. I will live her maximum ten years (but probably more like five to seven years). It is expensive to redo your home often. Especially the more permanent places as kitchen and bathroom. Changing wallpaper/-color is not that hard or expensive so there I could have more fun. My flat doesn't have a bedroom, therefore I put up wardrobes to divide the space. As I don't have a significant other I made just enough room for a single bed. To ensure that my flat would be more easily saleable I made sure that the wardrobes are easily moveable so the next owner can fit a large bed without redoing the hole space. My next home will probably be a more permanent home, and then I can care less about the next owner..

@@ahh-kneee if you plan to live in a house for short term (5 years or less), then you do need to consider expensive interior design for the next buyer. People are petty and consumers will not want to buy your home if the tile is not neutral/ timeless and the counters and floors are not easy to work with. I love the basic "use your stuff" tip. This was the year when I pulled my Good China out of my sideboard and put it in my kitchen cupboards. I don't need 2 sets of china and so I donated the boring "kitchen basics" plates I was using for everyday to my local thrift store. The thrift store only takes stuff they're really going to sell in shop so I know it didn't wind up in a landfill. More room for me and someone else got a very affordable set of plates that hopefully they loved. win-win

My son gifted us a house 🙏🏽 but he wanted the shelving and the glass pane cupboards. We had major fights with him saying I’m a bit ungrateful and me saying he’s not going to live there. People would perhaps say I’m ungrateful, I can’t change it. But I had sacrificed to educate my children, and as a nurse I worked in two hospitals. I didn’t want to wake up every day and resent the space where I spent the most time. My daughter spoke to him and said you give it unconditionally or not. So we reached an agreement and we compromise. I now have the cupboards of my choice and two small rounded shelves where I put my plants.

I am 100% with you on making functionality the primary consideration. May I offer an alternative take on the practicality of open shelving in kitchens? It has to do with aging/accessibility issues. I am pushing 60, and in the house we are building, I did not want storage space that I could not reach easily. So we are having no upper cabinets at all. Pots and pans, crockpots, cooking utensils, flatware, spices - all go in the lower cabinets, which is all drawers and pull-outs. Food goes in the pantry. We are having two live edge shelves on the opposite side of the kitchen from the range (I’m adding that info for the people who stay twisted up about the idea of grease, which I have never found it be a problem in any kitchen I’ve cooked in.) On those two shelves we will have our pottery dishes and glasses and not a whole lot else. We will use that stuff every day and it should be easy to keep clean. I am an avid cook and have given a lot of thought to what would work best for me in the kitchen, and I am pretty stoked about the idea of those two shelves.

We built 3 open shelves The top shelf is purely decorative. The bottom shelf is stacks of plates and bowls we use daily. The middle shelf holds larger mixing bowls and part of my creamer collection. I love it. It doesn't get any dirtier than any other surface. I agree with thinking about function. I am past buying every gadget that comes out. Trying hard to glean the unnecessary and keep only what I love.

  • @merrywalsh2809

Yes, there are reasons to do open shelves. Window placement is one. We have shelves between large windows that are 36” apart. If we put a box cabinet there it would look stuck on and the sides would impede the sight lines and light. I put some plants and decor items on them. I like to keep my countertops as free of items as possible, and adding decor to the kitchen on shelving accomplishes that. The other reason to have them is it opens up a narrow galley kitchen.

Also a vacuum robot that cleans every day when I am at work. It‘s worth it for me. My apartment is small thats why open shelves make a lot of sense for me. Also I have that black metal open shelve industrial look. Open metal pots and pans that hang on hooks (mimicking a commercial kitchen) fits the whole design of my apartment.

I actually am a fan of and did open shelving in my kitchen insted of upper cabinets. My kitchen is only 80 sq. ft (I know that’s really small, especially for US standards, but not so small in Europe) and I felt that upper cabinets would make the space appear even smaller as it visually fills the upper part of the room. We carefully planned our lower cabinets to be able to house all the pots and pans, gadgets and kitchen utensils we need. As for the shelves - they display all our tableware, glassware, cutting boards, etc. I love being able to display our collection of lovely ceramics and why would I hide them away in a cabinet? It’s actually a great way to be mindful of what we choose to bring into our home because if it’s going to be on display is has to look good, and since the space is limited, it has to be at least dual purpose. In a large home I’d still choose a combination of upper cabinets + open shelving, it just gives you the option to bring so much personality into the space. Fully fitted lower+upper kitchens always feel like a kitchen showroom to me.

I was actually disappointed to see this trend come back around knowing the dirty death they had before. Plus, even if you’re a very clean person and dust often, you can’t just vacuum or dust the shade without ruining the crimped pattern it had. The material flattens easily so imo, this is just all around a bad design and trend

I will never give up my open shelves, lol. However I did put them in knowing I was going to be buying all new kitchen items (we’d had a house fire, total loss) and could choose things that look good together. I cook three meals a day and only keep a day or two worth of dishes up there (we have drawers for the over flow) so everything gets cycled through and washed often. I would say open shelves are more of a lifestyle choice than just a design choice, if it’s pure display then sure you’ll be dusting up a storm, lol. I’d like to add that thinking too much about the next buyer might make you feel like your living in their place instead of yours, lol. If the plan is to stay in you place long term then likely your buyer will be redoing the place to suit themselves anyway.

I am of the same mind with decorating your house for you and those people you share it with. My parents have painted their house 3 times, each time picking a color that would be good for resale. They have lived there for nearly 30 years. Pick a paint color, floor color, tile color/pattern that you LOVE. After all, you will be the one who sees it the most.

I like the look of open shelves but with a cat, they are a definite no go for me. I have seen minimal shelves along with uppers that I loved the look of and may do that in a future home. I absolutely love the idea of drawers for everything though. As I age, they just seem more practical than squatting to reach the back of a lower cabinet or climbing a step stool to reach the top shelves of uppers like I do now.

I actually disagree with the hand-formed tiles going out of style. It reminds me of Japanese pottery repair! I don’t personally have this in my house but I can see how it can be used to add nice texture to an area (as long as an entire house/room is not done this way). I liked the part where you talked about planning with all of your senses in mind. I’m all about practicality. 😘

I was looking for somebody to mention this. I agree I think there’s a way to do hand formed tiles with a modern essence. I saw someone on architectural digest, a celebrity of course, and they did handmade tiles but they literally chose each tile so that the tiles felt purposeful. so it might’ve been three tiles of a box of eight but those three really went together.

Here’s the thing… trends are fun and gives us all something to do and spend our money on BUT, I think the goal should be to get your home looking and feeling like HOME. To make it a place where you feel good and everything you see and how you feel in each room gives you a sense of peace and tranquility. I can honestly say that I’ve FINALLY gotten to that point. I LOVE my home. It feels so good and I love looking around at the things and furniture I have and feel like I will be super happy living with it for many years to come. What a great place to be in life. Seriously. It’s like reaching enlightenment. I’m so content and happy with my home and I’m in no way concerned with what’s on trend these days. I don’t even care. At least not for my home. Trends are fun to look at but I don’t want to bring it home. If anyone is familiar with Hygge, that is what I have. It’s the FEELING you have when at home. I think we ALL need that and don’t realize it. It’s the sense of instability and uneasiness that causes so many of us to want to buy more and change things so often. It’s more of a distraction. I think once you think about it and realize that’s where you are, you’ll choose to make your home more Hygge than on trend. Hygge is warmth and comfort and can be forever. That’s not to say that you can’t add new things. Just imagine all the money you’ll save to take trips and experiences you’ll get to have.

Love mood lighting brought on by candles, lumes lighting is not very practical for everyday positional lighting. Prefer natural light and intentional task lighting. I have to partially disagree about hand formed tiles. I think it will fall out of use in styles that are more about crisp lines and great flow of space, like Minimalism Contemporary. On the other hand I think they will sick around for a long time in styles about imperfections or are a bit eclectic, like American Country or Boho.

I was once at a friend’s place and he had those open shelves. We were watching a movie and he went to the kitchen to get me some ice cream. He didn’t turn on any lights, grabbed a bowl, and filled it with ice cream. Unfortunately, that bowl was the one that his pet bird had used as a toilet. Now I can avoid design mistakes from the past and enjoy a more cohesive and inviting home. Is there hope to transform dated issues such as dark brown hollow doors with nicks -& open wood shelving that separates the kitchen nook and living room; metal louvre closet doors (YEEK! I have an open kitchen. I live in an old federal-style house that now has an open layout and it is a small house. I wanted everything to flow and hated the contractor upper cabinets that did not even touch the ceiling. I removed them and used subway tile all the way to the ceiling. This really opened up the space visually. I did leave one glass door cabinet and added to it to reach the ceiling. I placed shelves, but not too many. I placed all my dishes and cups and bowls, which are all white, on the shelves. Since it is usually the top dish that might get a bit dusty, I always reach for the second dish. The fact that I removed the upper cabinets made me throw out so much stuff that I never used. I did use the upper cabinets to build an island and use them for storage. The clean open space that I now have is worth the trade-off.

“We have electricity, so let’s use it!”😂 My kitchen is so small, no island, so a hard no to the open shelving! Two people in my kitchen is a crowd, lol. My pleated lamp shades went away eons ago, but I used the attachment on my vacuum to clean them, cuz I don’t do dusting, lol. great content as always, Kiva! 👍Oh, and I love the blouse you’re wearing today! ❤️

I will agree on shag/high pile rugs. I fell in love with a shag-type rug (it’s a woven rug combined with high pile geometric shapes, if that makes sense). And of course, it’s white. 🤪 I thought the robot vacuum would help keep it clean and fluffy, but nope! I ended up buying a wet/dry vacuum, because the matted down parts were driving me crazy! It works really well, but it adds another step to the cleaning routine if you want to stay on top of it. I still love the rug, but I'll be sticking to more low maintenance rugs in the future.

Roomba needs a ramp to get to that high pile carpet! Low pile wool rugs are my favorite. But I think the new outdoor textiles are also excellent. Low pile is easier to vacuum too. I disagree on black grout. I think it is very practical and when done correctly an excellent choice. I am sick and tired of trying to get white now grey dirty moldy silicone clean. I am finished using a toothbrush to clean every freakin line of grout near the tub. Not doing that. And I don’t want to pay a tile guy to Re grout every year or every six months. The grout pictures you showed are great examples of a LAZY tiler. Fat black grout lines are easier for them. Get the thinnest line. Buy your own spacers and give them to your tiler. Try not to use black faucets too; use polished chrome or brushed gold or brass. The black fixtures with black grout are a No No No. Also bigger subway tiles. 3x12 or 4x12. Rectified edges. This will give your bathroom a sophisticated look. Then do a wood look tile floor and you get an organic feel. But a white tile floor works too. I just hate looking at body hair on white tile floors so I do wood look tile. Those pictures you used are an unfair representation of a good black grout tile job.

I agree with the larger tiles but agree with her about the black grout. My friend has it and it shows just as much dirt/dust as white grout. I have light grey grout and I like it. It’s just enough color but not so dark it shows all the dust or whatever. But hey each to their own.

I'm all for the tall greenery on my table but I have it on a tray with a candle and handmade honey jar and I just remove it all at once if I need the table so I don't have a forest at the dinner table 😆 I'm okay with moving it as long as it's one tip to the counter and not like 3+ trips.

Such great tips! I think intentional is the key to making a design work for a long time.. It’s too easy to buy things that occupy space without thinking of function. Thanks for these insights..
