The rug advice and the circumference of the chandelier were helpful tips. One note about lighting: candle light or 'warm light' is actually what the human eye/body would benefit from in the bedroom. White/blue-focused light is detrimental to end-of-day biochemistry. It disrupts production of melatonin and increases cortisol which poses an issue for sleep.

Hahhah your mirror comment is so spot on! The person who owned our house before us put a floor to ceiling mirror across an entire wall in the bedroom. To get rid of it we have to destroy the wall. It is so awful lol. Also my cat likes to stand on me in the middle of the night to admire herself

They didn’t like reading by candlelight, so they invented electricity. 🤣🤣🤣 Jokes aside, excellent tips, Kiva! Agree with you on family pics in the bedroom. I find that framed family photos on the wall also seem a bit funereal and should be reserved for our deceased loved ones. Photos of the living seem better placed on tables, consoles, and other flat tops. I know most won’t agree with this; it’s just a quirk of mine.

*Dressing the Bed* . I like the look of a tailored bed skirt, however, being single and having a dog, they seem to get messed upped and grungy quickly. I use a coordinating fitted sheet to cover my box spring. For the end of the bed, in warmer months, a table runner can look lovely for a bit more pizazz. I also prefer to use a twin size quilt layered a the foot of the bed instead of a throw.

They also sell stretchy bands that are designed to cover the box spring (without having to go all the way under the mattress). I bought one because the mattress is unpleasantly heavy. I also have ended up with bed skirts grungy and covered with dog hair.

Unpopular opinion: I firmly believe in RUNNERS by the side of the bed. Can be used in conjunction with a rug oriented the wrong way because it's too small. Runners are easier to buy, easier to clean and easier to move, but can look great and keep your feet warm when you get out of bed.

I agree no mirrors in the bedroom, as long as you have room somewhere else like the bathroom for a nice mirror. I have to disagree on the family photos though. I love being surrounded by pictures of my family; however, I think my guests would be more interested in seeing beautiful artwork rather than pictures of my family. I can't imagine putting family photos in the dining room. With these photos in the bedroom, unlike some other commenters here, I don't feel "watched" at all or get any bad vibes. I'm surrounded by beautiful memories of times with my family. I love it.

No mirrors in our bedroom at all LOL. One issue I do have is the art over our bed. It's eight 8x10 patent reproductions, and they need more presence. But great news I'm being promoted and as soon as I get a paycheck at my new pay rate I'm ordering mattes and 11x14 frames for them. At least the rug is the right size. (It will still look very spartan by your standards, it's still a dude aesthetic but it will be more elevated with the upgrade frames.)

When we moved, the mirror that came with our dresser didn’t come. I told my husband I didn’t want it. So I have a small round mirror in my bedroom. Mine is on the wall next to the window. I have an antique cedar chest at the end of my bed. And right now it’s full of my clothes. But I do have a Casaluna blanket at the end of my bed. I should take the course. But I want to change stuff around in my bedroom. I have to measure my furniture first. Then maybe I can put curtains on my bedroom window. I’m not putting a rug in my bedroom. My dogs would just pee on it. Plus, we have carpet. And I know my husband isn’t going to go for a rug over carpet. He won’t get it. I would love a chandelier or any other light. We have boob lights. I’m not moving my bed. But I want to move the dresser and chest of drawers. And the desk thing, I have my makeup on. I have it in my head. But I’m not sure any of it will fit. I read in bed on my e reader. And it doesn’t bother my husband.

You want to know my biggest issue with my bedroom? Charging cables 😂 I'm still in the beginning phase of not even just decorating but furnishing my apartment, so I've been using a plastic tote as my bedside table, lol. But I use earbuds a lot, especially in bed. While I have USB chargers on either side of my couch, I've slapped a power extension brick on my bedside "table" to plug my fan, phone charger, and USB charger for my earbuds. So! Anyone else who also uses such tech have any ideas on how to make it look nicer than just lazily putting the extension brick in full view? I know I'll need longer cords, for one. Hm, maybe some cable management holders as well? And a wireless charging dock for my phone (it's Android and I wonder if it would charge it through my phoke case).

Don’t know why people call you “anti” family photo. I have heard the no family photos from a bunch of designers. The first thing any professional home stager who is staging your home to sell will do is remove family photos.

I couldn't disagree more about needing dressing at bottom of the bed. To me its a matter of taste and not a design element like nesting art is.

The perks of being incredibly shirt: i could place the chandelier 5'0 and I wouldn't hit myself

Never place a chandelier over a bed because, according to the ancient art of Feng shui, the heavy metal ENERGY can cause damage to whatever body part is being exposed. Don't scoff - there are thousands of case studies that back this up. All designers should study Feng Shui because it provides a good foundation in flow and harmony.

I hate hotels that use quilts. Just because you change the cover doesn’t mean I’m not lying under other people’s sweat. Especially when I sweat in them 🤢

I think you mean a duvet. A quilt doesn't have a changeable cover - the definition of quilting is the stitching the connects the quilt top, the batting, and the quilt bottom. A duvet is like a comforter or thick blanket that a cover goes over.

@@Kiterpuss I’m an Aussie and we call the stitched ones a comforter. But different states also have different names for the same thing. Another state calls the stitched ones an eiderdown. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I have a huge mirror in a corner, I don’t dress my bed nicely, I don’t even have a rug in my bedroom. Should I feel sorry?

Not picking on you specifically, but I'm noticing there are WAY too many "mistakes" videos out there. If a designer has suggestions on how to do things and wants to show us how to make our homes lovely, I'm all ears. But telling me I'm doing it all wrong is a bit of a turnoff. Consider a more positive approach. And yes, I'll be posting this same comment in many other places.
