It took me a long time to figure out what I want to do until this year. I've seen first hand the struggle that students have in schools. These are challenges that require people to community bond, and I think that a school social worker will have the tools to help build that relationship while addressing an individual person's needs. I'm at the beginning stages of applying for an MSW program right now, and I'm excited and optimistic for an awesome future for others and I. Good luck to everyone on this thread, and thank you Mind your Society for sharing your knowledge.

Thank you for creating this video! Sometimes Social Work often is associated with "taking a vow of poverty" with our Clients. This educates the community on the importance/impact of Social Workers. I firmly believe that with the exodus of each administration, there is always be work to be done. I really like to social responsibilities for corporate Social Work because this is one of the ways we can be a catalyst for change! I like your channel and will be following. Hi I am a social worker. I would strongly encourage you to get experience interning, volunteering before you choose to get a degree in this field. The reason I say this is because many jobs in the field are highly demanding and stressful with a liability considering we work with vulnerable populations. Your pay often depends on where you live. If you do choose to study social work at the masters level I strongly encourage you to go to an affordable program, not an expensive private school. I am a hiring manager and MSWs from new online schools and older renowned programs are hired and paid the same.

I really appreciate this because it provides me some good options to apply myself to once I retire from my current position. I do want to add that medical social work pay has increased especially in the hospice and palliative care setting; depending on experience. At my organization it is about $ 75-90,000.00 with a pension. I am on the higher end with 11 years experience. Also if you work in hospital that is non profit, you can get loans forgiven. I did.

When I was a senior in HS I wanted to be a social worker. At least in my state, it required a 3-yr master's degree and thousands of hours of UNPAID, hard work. Only to graduate to make less than what most of my friends who had 2-yr degrees were making. No thank you. I think social workers are very important, but our culture disagrees. Which is why we pay them, like teachers, so little while someone selling garbage straight out of high school can earn 6+ figures a year. High pay in social work is the exception, not the norm. Social workers should be uniting to fight that.

In California in the MSW programs such as USC or Cal State Long Beach your concentration in their MSW program has to be in Children, Family and Wellbeing to qualify for their Pupil Personal Service Credential. In the PPSC post program you have to be bilingual, passed the CBEST test for LAUSD and tuition is like $1500. I also add the school district wants you to have your LCSW

  • @MindyourSociety

OMG! I find that the certs and qualifications in California are always some of the strictest in the country. Like I know for example, becoming a JD is so intense there. In Cali, there are no options for Social Workers who didn't focus in a specific area during their MSW program to become social social workers later? In Michigan where I live, you don't have to focus in a specific area. You just have to get your MSW, and the practicum experience as well as supervision and your license.

i just did more research from state to state and it varies so much. thanks for your comment. i'm going to edit out the part where i mention that you don't necessarily have to get the training during your MSW program, just so it doesn't lead to too much confusion!

I’m a Medical Case Worker 11 with the Department of Mental Health La county I started at $21 an hour and now at $33 per hour it took about 7 years to move up but this type of social worker you need bachelor degree in health administration, social work, psychology or any related social science degree. . I have a bachelors in Health Administration which was the main degree they ideally wanted this was back in 2013 when I first started if you speak Spanish you get a bonus . My salary is really good. Then in 2014 I went back to school for my masters MFT and now with this freeze I can’t promote so in the meantime I’m working on getting my hours so when the promotions opens back again I will apply as a Mental Health Clinician so my salary as a medical case worker before taxes was around $69,OOOO and take home salary $63,0000. I make good money and I’m not even working as a therapist yet. My salary will continue to go up once I get promoted as a clinician. So this lady is correct !!!

Wow. Not bad my social worker masters student buddy was humiliating me for being a truck business owner at age 23 with 3 trucks. But little does he know each truck generates 5-7k a week per truck. He’s on the right track going to school for free due to his mother being a professor’s assistant. But he has no work experience in that field. I tell him to focus less on his rap career and focus on getting an internship. I want all my buddies to succeed. I tried the college route but I just couldn’t get over the fact that they kept telling me I’d “work for a great company”. I never wanted to work for anyone. In fact, now I have employees with college degrees working for me because they couldn’t get a decent job in their field. But I hope within the next year or two I can go back to school and finish my degree in marketing and learn more on how to manage my money.
