God gives each of us gifts. Our gifts are not meant for us . It's meant to be shared with the people around us who's needs us. Some people are not cut out for social work. I've seen alot of videos where People say they had to leave the job due to stress. If your passion is to help people go for it . There s always going to be ups and downs and nothing will be perfect . But at the end of the day are you happy with what you've done .

This video gave me a lot of confidence in the decision to pursue my BSW. I was hesitant at first considering I'm a very introverted, self sufficient person, but the gratification and enjoyment I get by talking to and empathizing with others led me in this direction. First video I've seen that calls the systems into question. The cards are stacked against social workers trying to do good for their communities because the systems don't even believe in the work. The systems are built to do the opposite of what social workers can achieve. It's like social workers exist in part to aid in the collateral damage dealt by the same systems that hire them. I don't think systems want social work to exist, it's an after thought. It should be a point of entry to be preventative to harm, not reactive.

Social work is very stressful and the pay is low. Nursing is stressful depending on what you do, but he pay is much better. I would definitely stick with nursing😁 I work as a nurse care coordinator and I absolutely love it! Social work burned me out so I went into nursing knowing exactly what I wanted to do.

@@melissav9979 Omigosh this is my inner debate. Should I get my MSW or go into nursing? I’ve worked as a teacher for the past several years and love it and use to work in a DV shelter. I like helping people find resources and helping them through hard situations and I like that a Master’s comes with a lot of opportunities when nursing seems more narrow. Social work also seems easier to age into compare with nursing which seems very physical. I’m still unsure.

After learning how much of a better impact I can make on a persons life I feel it'll feel much more rewarding. I am currently working in an impoverished area, and yes people hear the city name and automatically assume ghetto, dangerous, bad. But working here two years, I've seen gems amongst the "muck" and it makes me wish I could provide back to them. There are so many good people here who just do not have the resources. Gabby, Thank you for such an amazing and clarifying video. I am a 2nd-year graduate student working on finding my school social work internship, it is very competitive. I am hoping this week things will improve. I am creative, positive, and always willing to learn and grow more to become a better human every day. I have to work to help support my family and I feel as if Social Work is a career that I can stay in until retirement. I might want to have my own practice someday, and I love having animals participate when groups are being facilitated. I also love art and music, so I will find creative ways to inspire people too and help them persevere as well. I love how you pointed out that some rich people don't have a community of friends. That is so true, sometimes friends are more important than family. Thank you again for your video.

Tiffany Colon Hi Tiffany. Congrats on the new career move!! We’re not alone :) - actually very common as I learned during group interviews. When I was in the middle of the application process, I got really worried when I discovered I had to submit a resume...because my work experience is completely unrelated. But my mentor- with MSW who taught at Columbia University & New York University- encouraged and advised me to outline a resume that highlights volunteer experience and alternatives that are related. For example, if you were really involved in your church community (if you attend) or just really involved in your community, that’s worthy of highlighting. Or if you have children or anyone in your life is elderly or disabled and relies on you, that is worthy of highlighting. Also any causes that you’ve committed yourself to, or have offered your help to such as community organizing (even on the smallest scale- it’s never considered too small) or even baby-sitting. During interview process, I met other applicants like me who were transitioning too. The advantage we have is our life experience. Social Work requires self-awareness & true commitment. School administrators are also looking for your capacity to self-reflect and adjust your sails to the winds. Sometimes it’s age and life experience that gives you that. I hope this helps.

I gave up my last career to stay home to raise our daughter, who's now 4, and in re-evaluating what I think is important in life, it really feels like social work is the next move for me, but I'm terrified of not getting accepted.

💯 percent correct. I have been in this field for 13 years and there comes a point with all that you see that you cannot work against a system and you cannot push people who do not want to change and you are expected to be the miracle worker to fix it all. When the reality is, you can't. The beautiful thing about being a social worker though is you are right times are changing and the skills that you learn as a social worker are incredibly valuable and transferable to so many other areas. I am right now in the process of switching careers to pursue a different area all together. But I do not doubt the skills that I learned will be helpful to this new transition. I have worked as a Healthcare Social Worker and burn out is real. It's time for change.

I have always been really sure of the fact that I wanna do social work within the school system because I have indeed always been a very caring and thoughtful person who definitely loves being there for other people BUT since I have been in college, I haven’t done very well academically and have also struggled to find the motivation for studying in my social work classes. Recently I have been wondering a lot about if social work is really the right path for me due to my lack of motivation for doing well academically and getting to where I wanna be. I also struggle a lot with depression so it has been kinda confusing because I’m not exactly sure if the reason behind me being such a poor performing student is because social work isn’t really the right path for me or because I just need to get better help for my depression 😬

I think I have a lot of important qualities you mentioned like perseverance, creativity open-mindedness, empathy etc but I am worried I don't have the social skills necessary to know how to handle difficult or awkward situations with people where what you say and how you say it can really affect them. I realise this is a skill I can develop over time but it makes me question whether I have the self belief to actually pursue a career this socially challenging

My husband still want to look pretty like you after all those sessions we went to. And I still want to wear the pants. We need help. Please make video on counselors stepping up to admit when they dont have the skill to help someone. Thanks

I went right to a 4 year college, but community college is a great way to save money! I had a part time job in college. It’s a little tough at first as you learn to balance it, but you will get used to it and be totally okay!! A lot of people do it, and you can too. You will just have to work on being organized, and not wasting time. Good look with graduation and next steps. It’s natural to freak out, but you will be okay 💜

its 2 years of supervision before getting your license. some are paid, some are not. some you have to pay them to supervise you or they pay for everything but you need to work for them for 2 years after you're license. it depends on the company or organization
