9 CHEAP overland vehicles for South Africa

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Join me as we have a chat about my thoughtS on the 9 best value 4x4 you can buy in South Africa.
Most of my research we done on the second had car web sight www.WeBuyCar's.co.za. Of course lots of the vehicle you can find for a lot more then we talk about depending on there condition but this is what I found and would be willing to buy and work on.
With second fuel and second had car prices set to drop with the economic strife we are going through now might be a really good time to look at picking up a dead cheep 4x4 and start your overloading adventure's.
As promise here is the link to the Toyota land cruiser in the video I have been looking at this one for a while I think it is a great deal evan though it had high miles the engine in these are amazingly long lived and it would not bother me in the slightest.

I have, as you can see it on my profile pic camping in Kommetjie caravan park, a 1997 Pajero 3.5 v6 DOHC AUTO long wheel base. I bought it for R48 000.00. I don't like the blister fender shape, therefore i chose this one. Low and behold i have spend another R33 000.00, the engine was rebuild and the spares are expensive because most of the spares i could only get from the dealers. I have also serviced the Transmission the front and rear diffs and the transfer case and the prop shaft and a hole lot off seals and bearings and suspension. I would like a 2 inch lift and airbags at the rear as this Pajero cant handle a load properly. I have so much plans because i am going to make an epic over lander. I would like to fit a rear diff lock then it will be hard to stop this suv anywhere in my mind. After i have rebuild the engine i am now getting 5.7km/p/L no matter how i drive, AND I AM LOVING IT. Everything on it works especially the AC. I have a range of about 550km on the tank, highway driving. I have filled it up ones where i chucked 103L in the tank before it was full. My 2 cents

Bought me November 2022 a good looking 80series 4.2 1hd-t drove 850km and broke down in Warrenton with a completely busted engine. I found last week a conrod wich is the last essential part for the engine rebuild……. and I fought it would be easy to get Cruiser parts in SA. Should have shipped my Patrol from Europe and save me a bit of money 😂😂

Hay I was looking around the other day and there is not much out there right now :( But maybe when the winter comes people will start selling again. Look for one that some one has spent the money on all ready you will save in the long run (on average). Been working on the colt today and apart form some bits and bobs everything was recycled from what came with the car 5 years ago.

would like to know your thoughts on the parts side of this list. Basic issues cost of parts VS price of vehicle tips of what to look out for in buying second hand Also, you showed some clips of events and spoke about some overland trips. Could we get some more vids on these and top tips of venues to go to? Agreeing with some other comments, great to see some SA content coming through👍

I used to own a 2009 Terios Off Road edition that came with a 50mm lift, side steps, nudgebar etc and 10kw more than standard. I had a set of Goodyear Wranglers in 235/70R16 on it vs standard 215/65r16. I went through De Wildt 4x4 except for Gert se Klip, lots of game farms, Marakele Nation Park in the 4x4 area, Mozambique and the list goes on. I miss that car alot. 12km/l, faster robot to robot than a Standard Velociti Golf and drive almost anywhere

I use to own a 2 door xj , it's so much better than the 4 door. They are nice but parts is a huge problem and expensive. Unfortunately you can't walk into a auto zone and buy the parts of the shelf.

Greetings from the UK. Did Mitsubishi sell their l200 pickup truck in south Africa? early 2000's model, so the K74 engine. I have one that's mechanically in good condition, and am thinking about planning a future adventure, overlanding in Africa. But I think it would only be wise to do so with a vehicle that I can get parts for in Africa!

Good stuff! Here are a few other possible vehicles that should be able tomake the list; Land Rover Discovery 2-3 along with Toyota Land Cruiser J9-12) Prado. Should be available in those price-ranges..... I often hear that SouthAfricans complain about LandRover parts prices...... OK, if one sticks with LR Branded parts, they are dear! No doubt.... BUT when comparing to fi genuine Toyota Parts, they aint bad! The variety of aftermarked / OME parts for a LandRover is WAY bigger & more affordable than the Japanese brands... Food for thoughts :-) & YES I own both LR & Toyota(s)

@@peters2860 So have a search on my favorite time-killing web sight We buy cars and this is what I found. www.webuycars.co.za/buy-a-car/9B2363870 Diesel Colt bakkie not too many kl and will be good off-road. Under budget but looks in good nic. www.webuycars.co.za/buy-a-car/77CD75091 Mazda drifter with camper conversion if your doing more Overlanding trip this will be great and supper easy camping! might not be great on hard 4x4 tracks. www.webuycars.co.za/buy-a-car/76FBA0875 v6 Prardo with a front bumper. high kl but if the service history checks out should be good with a good service. more investigation on that one but it caught my eye. www.webuycars.co.za/buy-a-car/706AC5108 Mitsubishi Pajero looks lifted with big wheels. Haven driven the previous vision of this they are good offroad with lots of space and are very comfy! low kl for the diesel so all happy there. (though we buy cars have it as an inline 6 hmmmmm) www.webuycars.co.za/buy-a-car/662F86119 Another Pajero but with from are rear bars also looks lifted but would need to get hand's on to check. probably get the price down too. Don't know when you will be in South Africa but keep an eye on we buy cars coz they do have a lot of care rotate around a lot. Lastly just because I would love to get this for the channel and overland it and show you all how much it would break down but it would also be amazing fun! www.webuycars.co.za/buy-a-car/AE5E64858

The newer Pajero’s should not be considered a serious off roader, Really. All round independent suspension (like a sedan), NO ground clearance, NO articulation, massive rear overhang. Shite things in general. You would probably be better of with a Subaru Forester than in a newer Pajero going off road. Oh, and if you try to use it like a proper off roader, you wear out all the suspension bushings fairly quickly, and the damn thing will eat up tires like mad. And the bushes cost a fortune to have replaced. And for you Pajero fanboys out there ready to fight back on this, driving your Pajero over a dune or down a 2 track road is generally not what i would consider offroading.. You can literally take most AWD sedans nearly everywhere any of these pathetic newer Pajero’s can go. Junk. And they are hopelessly expensive for what they are. A tall estate car….

I don't see small compact suv's as overlanding vehicles. Off road vehicles definitely, but not overlanding vehicles. Space and load capability is key and trying to force a vehicle to do something it was never meant for, is totally impractical. Another bang for buck offroader you could look at, is the old 1st & 2nd gen Discoveries, as well as the SFA Hilux and 60 series cruisers.
