8th Dan Iaido Master Explains the CORRECT Seichūtō (Musō Shinden Ryu Iai Kata)

Спорт

In the online Musō Shiden Ryu lessons that Seki Sensei teaches, we learn two types of the Kata Seichuto, which we call Ver.1 and Ver.2. But why are there two different kinds to the same Kata? And how are they performed differently?
So today, Seki sensei, an 8th Dan Iaido Master with 40 years of experience in Musō Shinden Ryu, will perform and explain the two versions of Seichūtō. By watching this video, you will learn that the typical Seichūtō practiced today is not the original one passed down in the Ryuha, Musō Shinden Ryu. By the way, tickets for the 3-day training camp in Japan held by Seki Sensei and Let's ask Shogo are now on sale! Check out our Patreon page for more information!
*The content of our videos is based on the teachings of Asayama Ichiden Ryu and personal studies/experience | There is no intention of denying other Ryuha styles, theories, and cultural aspects

That's honestly awesome. A nice little testament to the dojo's respect for not just a specific Ryu-ha, style or culture-but to swordsmanship and martial arts as a whole.

Will you ask Seki Sensei about how he might wield a lightsaber in Star Wars? There is a lot of Japanese influence in lightsaber fights in the movies and tv shows.

This is unrelated to the video, but I would love to see Seki Sensei’s take on different lightsaber forms from Star Wars, how they compare to traditional techniques, and what his approach to handling a lightsaber would be.

From the pov of the attacker the unsheathing is almost invisible until the blade is nearly free of the scabbard. The blade then seems to appear in an instant. Very stealthy, iaido has a great many interesting techniques. I love it.

I would love to see how you would review koryu schools like the kukishinden ryu happo biken (i found instruction videos from their soke) or other old schools. They re so different from modern idaido schools in the way how their kata are performed and trained.

Hmmm, I disagree with the assessment that Version 2 is more powerful than Version 1; I feel that the opposite is true. Furthermore, I see Version 2 as simply a henka ('variation') of Version 1, the difference being the initial ma-ai of teki (the virtual attacker) although the explanation of when the response to the attack takes place (earlier vs. later) is also a valid one. Nicely done, as usual!

I was wondering if battle axes are something Seki Sensei is familiar with and maybe some time in the future could do a video reviewing how he would fight with and against. If you see this and have read this far thank you for reading.

Did Seki Sensei ever think he would be where he is today? Despite there being no wars and living in a peaceful age, does he believe himself to be dangerous, being a master of martial skills? Kunii Zenya defended his home with a sword when he was young, and I believe Seki Sensei himself might have heard of this.

The kobudo forms including he ones taught here are true battle tested techniques before the Meinji restoration including study of other classical and hidden weapon forms as well as unarmed. So yes a master of kobudo is a formidable opponent indeed.

Timing of V2 seems to work better since the lack of needing to move forward gives less opportunity for the opponent to react. However, I'm surprised that V2 is considered more powerful looking in competitions since the half step forward in the original V1 gives a more powerful looking/sounding counter in the first strike from comparing Seki-Sensei's performance of them both.

I agree with you but personally think the thing that feels the most powerful is the emphasis on centering against your opponent, turning an opponent's ambush into your own dominant position :)

*I have an important question-* I am confused. Why use a Katana while you are sitting down? If you are sitting on the floor, you are probably indoors, but wouldn't it be better to use a Wakizashi indoors? Aren't you supposed to leave your Katana by the front door?

I know you've done rapier and longsword with Seki-Sensei. However, I'm curious of what he would think of both custom lightsabers and the fact that there are lightsaber fighting competitions much similar to how kendo is practiced today. Also how he would approach the lightsaber if it were an actual weapon as shown in Star Wars, Phantasy Star, or Gundam. It would be equally interesting if we got to see how he would design his own lightsaber, even though there are already existing hilts that would brilliantly mimic an iaito. Keep in mind that there are already options so he can choose the color of blade he wishes to present along with either what is called a baselit (led only in the hilt with a hollow blade) or neopixel (very small LEDs throughout the blade). If you do order him one or two of them there are ones that resemble the original RX-78-2 Beam Saber. Also there are scabbard options so you can keep with the standard of Iaido. It could be an interesting concept to approach.
