89 Cherokee Fuel Tank & Pump Replacment

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

1989 Jeep Cherokee Pioneer 4.0L I6 Renix AW4 NP231
I'm tired of having a leaky gas tank so it's time to do something about it. While I'm replacing the tank I might as well throw a new fuel pump in there.

    This is great. I think i should replace my old fuel tank since i have the new 4.7 L engine. the major parts on amazon are 219 (including straps). Probably going to order these on friday. Thank you for the sweet video and it will definately help me along with my installation. I am going to do one minor modification by building my own skid plate for the new tank. Hopefully that will go good.

    Your video is good but I've noticed 2 things missing, your supply line is 3/8" and return is 5/16" hard to get wrong when stock. The other thing that can really screw you is if the lines from the rollover valves don't stay in the valley of the tank and cross over one of the raised sections hoses will have to be replaced due to their being smashed and pressurizing your tank causing you to partially dropping the tank again.

    My 1990 XJ is having fuel pump problems, it whines loud and won't go past 45 while feathering the gas, I replaced the fuel pump like 6 months ago and it's doing the same thing as the last one, I replaced the fuel filter 6 months ago aswell and when I tried to jump the relay for the fuel pump it wouldn't turn the pump on only make dim sparks, but put the relay in and when you turn the key it turns on and pumps.

    Great video. I need to cut my '87 Cherokee straps because I can't undo the nut on the j-bolt. At 16:40 you say that the straps are very hard to attach at the rear attachment point. Could you explain? I have new straps with a small round floating metal tube which I assume secures the strap at the back. How do you get the old strap out and how do you install the new strap? I can't find anything on the web to explain how to do this. I have searched and searched.

    That's what I had issues with. I talked about it a little at 16:17 but I got the tank all pushed into place and attached the hoses to find out I should have attached the straps first. I forget exactly how they come out but you either lift them or twist them so that they pop out of the frame. Let me know if you can't get it.

    Nick, did my renix to ho swap, but no fuel pressure in rail. I have new pump from O'Reilly (89 year) and a new pressure regulator (93 year). But no gas when press the relief valve on rail. Disconnecting fuel inlet, good flow into a empty water bottle. Reattached then Removed gas return line from rail and get flow from rail outlet into bottle. Are the fuel pumps different from 89 to HOs, because the fuel line and return line are in the front? The pump primes, if I dump fuel into the throttle body engine starts (high idle) until Gas burns off then dies. Still no pressure in rail. Please help...

  • @NickInTimeFilms

    @NickInTimeFilms

    8 жыл бұрын

    Hmm, that is very strange. The pump shouldn't matter, the only significant difference was in 97 when the regulator was moved to the gas tank but that's not an issue here. You have fuel out of the inlet hose so the pump is working fine and it comes out of the rail so at least that part of the rail is fine. Did you clean out the rail that you swapped in. If it's not clogged then the only thing I can think of is that the air just needs to be purged. Try priming it, pushing the schrader valve, and repeating that a few times to see if that lets the air out.

    Does the gauge seems to swing with the vehicle's momentum, like if you hit the brakes kinda hard does the gauge start to go up? could be a more sensitive sensor. or if it just seems to change erratically then it could be a loose connection

    All that work and you didn't paint or clearcoat the tank to prevent future rust? Rust is evil, I cleared the last tank I installed so it wouldn't rust in like a week. Wipe down to remove the oil that's on it from shipping, spray it with anything. It really, really helps.

    I have a video a while back on reinstalling my fuel rail and injectors if you just want to see the process. As for new injectors, my old ones seem to do the job and they are expensive. I've already replaced the o-rings twice due to a leaky injector which is a royal pain. Depending on what goes on, I might need new injectors if I ever do the stroker engine so maybe later in life.

    NickInTimeFilms Hrm I didnt see that video before. I'll relook for it. Because yea I need to clean my fuel injectors. Im sure its the cause of my hesitation with acceleration. Should just pony up and pay for it, its only 120 bucks to clean them. But yea replacing them is very expensive. Err wait yea I remember the fuel rail video, think I skimmed it though and didn't see the injector part. But thanks man, its very nice to see a shit ton of videos of same vehicle I own. You do a very good job of explaining things.

    also consider the O2 sensor with hesitation and stumbling. after removing the performance computer, changing cap, rotor, wires, and plugs (all HP parts), the only thing that corrected the hesitation and stumble was the O2 sensor.

    reminds me of how i attempted to fix leaking fuel injectors. tried the o-rings first, the fuel pressure regulator next, and then read on the comanche forum that the fuel injectors were leading due to a poor seal between the alum and plastic parts. after doing research, i went to the you-pull-it-lot with a list of compatible injectors. found a '88 buick v6 and pulled those injectors. they worked great and never had fuel injection issues again. but back to the topic of the video, the ultimate demise of my '89 mj was losing the left rear axle shaft about about 65mph; the brilliantly orange sparks from the brake backing plate ignited the fuel from the breached fuel tank - once i pulled over and got the truck to stop, my fire extinguisher seemed merely only a tease... so to fully support any concerns for "blowing you up", keep the fuel system in top operating condition.
