#87 Two ways to create alcohol ink flowers on ceramic tile
It been a while since I created flowers on tile. I'd forgotten how beautifully the ink flows on ceramic. In this video, I show how to create a beautiful flower using an airbrush and then one using the Ranger Air Blower Bulb. I actually liked using the Air Blower better.

That was a great video! Thanks for using the "bulby" thing too! The air gun is my next investment. Very informative. Thank you for sharing. How would you seal that?
@VivoVintageDesigns

Hi Lynn and thank you for watching. I seal it using 2-3 coats of karmar varnish and the 2-3 coats of the karmar UV protection. Once thats done, you can resin over it with your resin of choice if you would like to use it as a coaster.
I love your videos and how you explain completely as you go - very GOOD. One tiny little suggestion would be to make video when not running your washer/dryer. Not horrible, but it sounds like you are painting in a laundry. LOL.

Thank you. Alcohol ink on any surface must be sealed. I use multiple light coats of kamar varnish and then the same with kamar uv protection. To use as a coaster, I would recommend sealing aa described above, the using resin.
So beautiful! Thank you sharing the tutorial. Can I ask what you uses at the end - was it a white acrylic paint?

Thank you! It's alcohol ink - Snow Cap by Ranger. It's a mixative and a bit thicker in consistency than the other inks.
Your work on tiles is stunning! Can you use the tiles as coasters? Can a sealer be used, if so, which do you recommend? Once again, your work is stunning!!
@VivoVintageDesigns

Thank you Nancy. You have to seal the tile with kamar varnish and then kamar uv protection. You can later resin over it and use as a coaster. I use Art Resin.
Beautiful projects. Thank you. Can you use a straw to demonstrate blowing vs the device you use?
@VivoVintageDesigns
2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I wouldn't use or recommend using as straw. First because it's dangerous. Second because the moisture in your breath does not work well with alcohol ink. If an airbrush is not a option at this time, I would recommend the Ranger bulb hand Blower. Its inexpensive and works well.
I love the little bit of green that was created along with the yellow and black - it's subtle and translucent feeling. Like a flower.

Beautiful thank you for sharing , so what do you do to make it where it can be cleaned do you coat the tile with something?
@VivoVintageDesigns
3 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Since tile is not porous, you can simply wipe away using alcohol...its that simple😊
Thank you for this video. Would it be possible to use this technique on the bottom of a round glass cutting board by creating the center first, then the petals, so the design will show through on the top of the glass as it does on your tile? I bought one that only has petals, which is pretty and looks like a hibiscus, but I need to make daisies, so there needs to be a center.

I think that would work...and you can wipe it off easily if you don't like it. You would have to seal it though.

I wish I could respond in Spanish, but then you wouldn't understand me since it's so bad 😆. The white I use for the center is an alcohol ink by Ranger called Snow Cap. To seal my paintings, I use 3 coats of kamar varnish and then 3 of the kamar uv protection. 😊

Hi Deb. Snow Cap is a mixative by Ranger. Its an alcohol ink, but cant be used in the same way. It doesnt flow like regular ink.
Two more questions please. 1- could I use a straw and get the same effect? 2- do I have to put varnish before adding resin?
@VivoVintageDesigns
2 жыл бұрын
I dont ever recond using a straw. It's not safe. If you dont have an airbrush, use the ranger air Blower. It's about $10 and creates beautiful petals. You have to seal with karmar varnish first then UV protection before you can resin.
Very nice but I am wondering if you seal it with something ?😊

Hi Kathryn. I just posted a video about this yesterday (video #169) where I explain and show samples of sealing a painting on tile or paper. These tiles can be used as coasters or trivets, depending on how they are sealed. They can also be framed or you can place them on a small easel and used as home decor. Also, painting on tile is great for a beginner because you can easily wipe it completely clean and start again. Great for practice.

How do you seal the ink so the tile can be used?
@VivoVintageDesigns
2 жыл бұрын
It depends on what you want to use it for. If you simply want to display it, kamar varnish and uv protection is enough. If you want to use it as coaster or trivet, kamar varnish and uv protection then resin. Check the heat resistance of you resin you choose to make sure it suits your needs.
I was reading your instructions about to covert the tiles onto coasters, I don't like the idea of using RESIN (and I respect people using it, I am scared because of the fumes ,.etc) and don't misunderstand me; the finish is beautiful but I just have my reservations. If anything you have other than that please let us know, and people can takevutcfrom there. Thanks in advance.

I can understand your concerns. The one I use, art resin, doesn't have any fumes that I can recall, however, I have tried others that did have strong fumes. I've not used anything other than resin for coasters, so I really can't advise another product.

Hi! It will scratch or rub off if not sealed. *Krylon Kamar Varnish - amzn.to/2NLePpV - *Krylon Kamar UV Resistant Clear Gloss - amzn.to/30FeRVr. These are the 2 products I use to seal them. I usually apply multiple light coats of the varnish first, making sure to allow enough drying time between each and that the art is completely covered because the UV protection contains alcohol and can reactivate the ink if you didnt completely cover with the varnish. I use 2 coats of the UV protection. Once this is all completed, you can use resin of your choice if you would like to use as a coaster or if you just want the smooth shine of resin (my personal preference).
What do you seal your project with?

Hi Cindy. I don't use one when recording. Also, I have great ventilation in my studio. 2 windows, a door and use 2 fans to push fumes out. I never work with AI for more than 30 minutes, perhaps once a week. If you don't have good ventilation and work with AI for long periods of time, multiple times a week, I do recommend you take precautions such as a respirator, gloves, etc.
