80s Band Tell The Hilarious Story Of Their Biggest Hit From 1986 | Professor of Rock

Ойын-сауық

The story of Canadian band Glass Tiger’s biggest hit, the 1986 #2 smash Don’t Forget Me When I’m Gone, with lead singer Alan Frew and Sam Reid. It was one of those tubular radio songs that were the backbone of our coming of age years. It also had an 80s legend who sang background vocals on it, Bryan Adams.

I know this is going to sound nuts but I started listening to K-pop about 10 years ago simply because it had the kind of joy in the performance and the ear worms in the writing that 80s and 90s pop had. The songs might be simple but they have melodies and hooks where western songs have evolved into little more than a showcase for vocal range. I was born in 66 so I grew up on the music of The Monkees, The Archies and all of the bubblegum greats, I like my music "fun".

As a kid growing up in the U.S. north of Canada (Detroit), I was blessed to be able to tune into Canadian radio stations and discover Glass Tiger before they became big in other areas of our country. I waited years to catch them in concert, and finally did in Windsor in 2019 with the Chieftains. One of the last few live concerts I saw, along with Tony Lewis from The Outfield and Phil Collins, prior to lock-down. What a trifecta of my favorites from the 80s (and beyond.) Brilliant interview Professor! You asked for comments so I must relate this story: a highlight of my life....... ...it was 1984, I played on a men's league soccer team in Newmarket, Ontario Canada, the coach was Gordie Frew (RIP) my partner on the defensive line was his brother Alan Frew. Alan was a good player, but I used to yell at him all the time because he didn't play the offside trap the way I needed him to (I was the Captain of the defensive line) he used to come to the Saturday afternoon games with makeup on.....we (the team ) would ask him....."what's with the makeup Alan" he said he was In a group and that he had just come from their rehearsal (they were called Tokyo at the time) we made fun of him (as guys do) and then would get on with the business of our Saturday afternoon soccer game, which we all took very very seriously,.....(which we didn't take Alan as) until......he asked the team to come to his group's concert at the Newmarket Community Centre in late summer 85, to act as security. We all agreed, we wore our soccer shirts to "differentiate" ourselves from the very young and enthusiastic crowd. I had no idea what to expect, this was the first time we were to see Alan and his group ...who we had made fun of when he came to the games in makeup.....well ...I have to tell you ..it was one of the most memorable nights of my life....I will never forget the feeling of amazement and joy as I heard this group of musicians playing some of my most favourite songs as good as they could be played.....they played covers of Tears for Fears, Duran Duran, U2 Simple Minds and others of the genre (that I loved) at such a high level of skill, I was completely blown away! I was like...Holy shit, these guys are incredible! (And that's my Alan!) Within a year "Don't Forget me when I'm Gone" was released with the "Thin Red Line" album......and the rest is history..........the 80s were the best years of our lives....sigh....great to see Alan and Sam doing well! Great channel Professor! Cheers

Wow, this proves you never stop learning about the songs you grew up listening to. I never knew the line "Don't Forget Me When I'm Gone" was originally the beginning of the first verse, with the verse melody. Pretty interesting! 1986 was an interesting year for me, because we went on vacation to Florida (we lived in northern Ohio) that summer. "Glory Of Love" was #1 at the time, and I related it to a girl I liked in my class. I couldn't wait to get back to school to see her again. I heard "Higher Love" for the first time when we were in Florida! I also started high school that year.

Saga had so much and the fact you are a rush fan is probs why you were a saga fan. They were exceptional musicians and there are times where I would say the syncopation between the guitarist, drummer and keyboardist may have rivalled even Rush.

Last summer/early fall '86 was a pop-rock paradise with new singles from highly anticipated albums by Tina Turner ("Typical Male"), Madonna ("Papa Don't Preach"), Cyndi Lauper ("True Colors"), and Huey Lewis ("Stuck with You") and equally awesome one-hit wonders (in the U.S.) that included Oran "Juice" Jones ("The Rain) and Timex Social Club ("Rumors").

It was the summer I remember best, being 14 years old and staying with my dad. During his time off work we would take many trips to Sara's Campground in Erie, PA. I remember "Don't Forget Me" being huge, The Blow Monkeys - "Digging Your Scene", Double - "The Captain Of Her Heart". I enjoyed it all no matter the genre. I was also transitioning from a BMX kid to a skate punk that summer and being introduced to Black Flag's live album "Who's Got the 10 1/2?", Dead Milkmen "Eat Your Paisley", GBH "Midnight Madness And Beyond" all released that year. So much different music to take in.

OMG! Does this song bring back memories! My son was 2 years old when this song came out. The Canadian version of MTV was Much Music. Every time my little one heard this song, whether on MTV or MM, he'd start dancing to it. When he'd see the little kids come on, he'd start imitating the little girl playing the horn! By the time he was 3, he knew the chorus, and by 4, he had learned his very first song! He's 39 now and he still knows it! Lol, what a trip back in time!! I love this chznnel! Thank you, Professor!

Love Glass Tiger. Don't Forget Me When I'm Gone and Someday were my favorites from them. I used to sing those in a couple of my old bands. I got to see them opening for Journey on their Raised On Radio tour. They were great once the sound guy got the high end up. The first couple of songs you couldn't hear vocals, snare, cymbals.....it was all bass guitar, bass drum and low toms. Lol. But once that was fixed they sounded great. I would love to see them again today and would be great to hear some new music from them as well.

The Summer of '86 I was in Army Basic Training. (June - August) then I went to AIT (Advanced Individual Training) from August through December. So most of the music we heard were songs that came out in the spring or older music. My favorite memory is one day a few of hadn't heard any music aside from Cadences, started singing "Hotel California". It was so fun. Then we had to get back to training. During my AIT, I bought a radio, and a few tapes so I could hear the music I had missed: Pink Floyd, Heart, Bob Dylan, and a few other "Classic Rock" artists.

Bryan Adams' vocals on this song and "I Will Be There" were like a bonus for me being a longtime Bryan Adams fan. Another Canadian band whose album listened to at that time also was Honeymoon Suite. Their album "The Big Prize" was blasting from my apartment as well. The veterans Loverboy continued rocking.

I distinctly remember hearing Steve Winwood's Higher Love for the first time on that trip and would hear it again and again and again. I also remember all those others mentioned at the beginning of the video and of course Glass Tiger was HUGE. I was disappointed that it didn't hit number one, but it really had a lot of competition. Professor, this was awesome! Dare I say, totally awesome. Sam and Alan came across as so genuine and humble as people but still immensely proud of their work as artists. For me, "Don't Forget Me" is one of those songs that I might forget about for a while but when I hear it, not only do I remember how good it is, but there's an emotional tug that I can't quite explain. Wang Chung's "Dance Hall Days" is another one that hits me that way.

The memory: My family and I had just come back over the border in late July of '86. We had been at Expo in Vancouver. My sister and I had the radio on in the motel room, and the great big pop intro to "Don't Forget Me (When I'm Gone)" grabbed us through the speaker as the Seattle disc jockey said something to the effect of, "Here's a brand new song from a new band from up north". (Of course he talked over it...hahaha). I remember very few exact moments I heard songs for the first time. But that is one, and it always reminds me of that trip and that summer. (And yeah, widespread great pop going on that year.) The songs: Some of the best Canadian pop songs that occupy spots in my brain are "Never Surrender" by Corey Heart, "When It's Over" by Loverboy, and a double shot of Bryan Adams with "It's Only Love" and "Heat Of The Night".

My college boyfriend back in the late 70's had a 66 Barracuda painted yellow so we called it the Bananacuda. He was from Indian Rocks Beach FL.

@@susanhawk8730 Thats Awesome! Mine was white, not nearly as cool as a bananacuda. I left the area 25 yrs ago, following jobs, but sure do miss the area. It was a great place to grow up, even as a poor kid. 👍🏼 thanks for sharing.

I hope there is an interview where they discuss the song Someday. That song is one of the most beautiful of the decade. Got me through lots of tough times. Brilliance.

I enjoyed this so much! Huge Glass Tiger fan. This song!! Oh, man! This song always makes me happy. No matter how bad a day I may be having, this song makes me smile. I love those guys. Thank you Adam for always making these really great in-depth videos. They gives us insight into what "IT" was about that song, that album, that time, that place, etc. And, for just a little while, let's us go back there and simply BE.

I always thought it was crazy to hear English, Irish, Scottish, Australian and in this case Canadian singers and musicians sing their hit songs with little to no accent but to hear them speak one has to listen closely to understand what they are saying through the heavily accented speech pattern. I've always wondered how their dictionaries in school said to pronounce certain words.

I graduated high school in 1986 and one thing about my life I would never change is the era of going through junior and high school in the early through mid 80s. For that, I feel blessed. What a totally rad era of music and videos... To the max!
