I got a couple set of string I carry with the bass - a 'fresh' set of strings for when it counts, another set of strings about a year older, for practices and jams, that I can boil if I feel cheap, plus a set of flats (I don't like using a bridge foam), all at the same med-heavy gauge. There's no shame in changing strings, and it often makes more of a tonal difference than changing basses. :-)

update! btw.. called Hartke, one tube! .. first a little background.. I’ve had an HA3500 for many years.. so, inspite of some negative points you’ve made about this amp and yes you’ve made positive!! I bought the 500 watt model. I have several great bass’s but particularly my 76 Stingray has more highend then probably any other bass! ..so regarding the bright switch hiss.. I have the amp set all 12o’clock..the bass eq dimed.. no hiss! with bright engaged. ok also.. played a 3 hour ( no breaks ) outdoors last night with 2 electric acoustic guitars and vocals.. low volume gig.. I’m sure the fan had gone on after all it was 85 degrees when we started FLA! Never heard it !! btw one Aguilar 12 cab.. mid gig one guitar player says to me “damn your bass sounds perfect” ok.. none of my basses will make the gain light up red unless I add a bass DI on the front end and crank it.. but I read that from a lot of players.. who cares right?! I run the Drive at about 3 and I love compression so it’s pretty much dimed! .. lastely I had a friend come by.. plays with Nikko.. yeah that NIKKO on drums.. only plays SVT.. played through the Hartke for about a half hour.. says Wow that sounds great!!’ 😊 btw: Saw Billy Shehann this past weekend Winery Dogs with his Hartke arsenal.. all hail Billy! met him at NAMM a few times, nice man! ok that’s all Kirk Out!

Hartke is great, def gonna take another look at this amp. Love my LH1000 and HyDrive 410 tho. My tone is mostly generated on my pedalboard (split lo/hi signals), and I wanted a clean powerful transparent bass amp for it. People rave over darkglass heads, but with the preamp built into the amp head, I don't see any way to easily/affordably split the signal for separate processing on the lo and hi end, and I don't want that distortion applied to my whole signal. So I prefer to use darkglass pedals that way I can put the preamp (and other fx) wherever I want. No matter how drippy and wet I make the hi end, that clean compressed fundamental bass is always solid. Shout out to Trey at GG for showing the Tyler Splitter on his bass pedalboard build.

Hey Glenn. When I'm recording vocals I can't monitor myself as I record, otherwise my brain tells me that someone else is trying to talk and I go quiet. Is this a confidence issue and something I need to overcome, or is it perfectly okay to just record the vocal and play it back each time?

Sounds fantastic. Going from a Geezer Butler like tone to a Geddy Lee tone doesn’t seem easy for one amp to achieve. But this clearly did just that. Oh and great monotone digs at the bass players. I bet not a single one caught them until after the video was done. That is if they have any memory functionality left.

What a coincidence, I just recently bought its little brother, the LX5500. Absolutely love it. My only real complaint is the lack of footswitch capability compared to its 8500 big brother. Given the price difference (and that I didn't need the extra power), I decided the tradeoff was worth it to me, as footswitchable drive and brite functions would just be "nice to haves".

I have a Carvin 500watt Pro Bass amp. It is 20 years old. It has all the same features as that Hartke plus a 5 band graphic EQ, noise gate, frequency crossover/4db boost to any frequency and separate high - low input for active or passive basses. The transformer is teroidial. The best amp I've ever played through. CARVIN baby!

Fantastic demo from a guy who's spent years trolling the bass community ... if Glenn learned to play by listening to bass players that came into his studio I'm not surprised they get so much abuse! That said, I've just bought one!

@@joshua.merrill getting good demos of a variety of bass pedals/effects instead of the occasional whatever's being pushed by whoever would be great. and honestly, I'd use some of the bass pedals on regular or extended range guitar - some of them are nasty and get even nastier right where I want my low 7th or 8th string to be. If you can keep from bleeding too much over into the bass players actual spectrum, using those bois can make your grunty pig punch through at a gig.

I tried the Alpha Omicron on my Schecter JL-7, and it surprised me how lackluster it sounded. I figured the drop E tuning would sound great, but something about it was sub par. I need to make some videos of the different gear I have. For bass, the current setup is a 5 string with Bartolini Active pickups tuned an octave lower (E0), into a Countryman DI, into the Alpha Omicron, into a MicroThumpinator, into an Ampeg PF-50T, into an Acme Low B-1 cab. The main distortion comes from the pedal, because the PF-50T doesn't distort very much, at least not with my bass; it has a little crunch to it, but not anything that would hold up as a distorted bass tone for Metal, in my opinion.

Hey mate. I'm no pro bass player, but I ended getting this exact amp head after my pf 500 head blew. ( my 4 year old switched red voltage switch on the back) I absolutely love how much tonal variety out of the hartke I can get with no pedals. It's light as hell and loud. Really has got some power. Just ask the neighbours. It's good for quiet practising to with the headphones and aux inlets. Has all the bells and whistles on the back for connecting to whatever it is you need to connect to.

I have to ask, was there any bass on Metallica’s “And Justice For All?” Many say it’s absent, but I tend to believe the bass was just too scooped and barely had any other EQ mixed in the process while being lost in the low guitar tone. Any idea of what actually happened?

GLEEEEEENNN, honest opinion on the Hartke HyDrive. How would you compare it to an Ampeg cab? I'm using an HLF 6x10, 45 years old and tired of making my Mom lug it around. I was looking at getting Hartke's 2x10 and 1x15. How much tone are the speakers really changing from brand to brand? And bro, you need to practice your bass a lot more. :)
