Training platforms - Firstly, it’s probably fair to say that most people will buy a smart trainer to work with a third party Training app like Zwift or the Sufferfest. The combination of the two has completely changed the indoor training experience, it’s now a lot easier to spend a bunch on time on the turbo, and actually enjoy yourself!
Replicate a route or download a new one - That being said, you don’t need an additional app. Most smart trainers will have their own platform that will also unlock additional features. In the case of this Wahoo Kickr, the Wahoo fitness companion app allows you to follow and even create your own training sessions.
Fitness Test - To really get the most out of the training aspect of your smart trainer, you should definitely take advantage of the fact that it will have an accurate, built in power meter. Firstly, you should find out how fit you really are with a fitness test. Then, you can use that data to plan and then execute your training. That old phrase train smarter, not harder, is definitely true here.

There should be a way to hook up your smart trainer to the electric power grid and sell your power to the local utility.

Indoor smart trainers are bloody brilliant. Smart training in the off season can make you a beast when the season starts. At least that's what I'm hoping (I've owned one now for a month and love it).

Something Si didn't mention is that in fact ERG mode makes things way easier. For example, ERG mode takes away the resistance from climbs. So you could climb the Alpe D'Zwift on a sweet spot training session (hypothetically).

A few yrs. back I switched from 170mm cranks to 165mm in doing so I set all PR's! When riding on the Trainer do riders ever swab out different size cranks say like 175mm to 170mm or in my case 170mm to 165mm to see if there are differences in power output? I actually put out more power with the longer cranks on the trainer vs. outside when I loose it and the 165mm cranks are more efficient! Personally I feel better when I incorporate both size cranks! So I was wondering what other riders do? Thanks and again great job guys and Emma on all the great tips for winter training!

The ERG bit and upping your cadence before a harder segment is essential. If you are a bit cooked the trainer can effectively grind you to a stop, so I find it better to use it only for workouts I know I can handle.

Question; I have moved indoors for the winter and use one of two wattbike pro's in my local gym but the KM and wattage are never the same on zwift as they are on the wattbikes yet Zwift is taking numbers from the wattbike, the wattage is always higher on zwift and the distance, is for the most time, not all the time, is higher on zwift, cadence spot on if i use trainer road the numbers on the wattbike and trainer road are the same, any ideas. BTW loved the london race, "BRUTAL" how does one get them sprinting watts, "JAW DROPPING NUMBERS" had a small audience in the gym, people looking on fascinated at the idea.

Would be quite hard considering they have sponsers so if suffer fest sponsors them but they say that zwift is better it wouldn't really work

In the "KEEP YOUR CADENCE UP" segment, did you say "sprint training" or "spring training"? I'll assume "sprint" with a "t" since that makes sense. I often have this confused state when my very dear and older friend Tony, originally from the UK, barks out commands on our group rides here in Ontario. Even though we have designated routes, he will occasionally alter it if there's something in particular he wants to see just for fun. Since he's the Club's founder and "Chairman of the Board" we obey delightfully. However, we do get confused when he barks out a change in direction to go either "right" or "straight". So we ask him, "Is that starboard or continue in the same direction"? We all have a good chuckle, especially when he tells us to "PISS OFF!" However, left detours are never a problem. Great show everyone! I'm hooked! I just may even buy some of your socks! :)

Uploading GPX file to simulate a ride I like for "fondo-ish" "race-ish" rides. Too cold and snowy to pre ride anywhere near when the event comes up (still winter time race/ride). When it actually comes to the race day, I'll already remember the insufferable hill climbs.

Agreed, adding that it also sucks when the programs or hardware have issues and that ride you just did on the trainer was for nothing if you even do get a ride. I have had countless days when I got kitted up, and everything set and the Tacx program would not work or it would crash. From what I read in their Forums it's still like that with TDA. Going outside is the only way you can guarantee a good training exercise with proper data.
