The point here is GET WHATEVER YOU WANT TO GET AND DON'T LET ANY "REAL DJ" Tell you what equipment to get so you can feel as "REAL" AS THEM, same goes for your controller, and software get what you can afford and or like but don't let others tell you you are wrong for buying the equipment you got THANK YOU, THANK YOU VERY MUCH !! NO applause neccessary 😁👏👏👏👏

Much of the time, the "real" DJs pump their brand either because they are shilling or wannabe salesmen for the likes of (Insert brand name here). OR they want to try to convince themselves that they made the right decision.

As mentioned speakers are a personal choice, and I have had no issues with the ones I use, in fact I recently received praise from a group used to playing Glastonbury. What did I supply to them for a gig in a small venue, it was a pair of altos. I also use dbtechnologies opera series as well as peavey pro 15.

Good information as always... I've always been a firm believer that as a DJ, your sound is one of the top 3 most important purchases (sound, controller, music) you will make if not THE most important, and this is not an area where you should cheap out. I look at it two ways when starting off...if it works you have great sound for your clients and events... If it doesn't work, you have good quality equipment that will not be hard to re-sell. I would take 2 quality tops over 2 entry level tops with subs any day. When you start off you will probably be doing smaller events, so you don't need a lot of sound but you do need good sound. When I started over 10 years ago, I set a budget and then did lots of research and reviews...I could have bought 2 tops and 2 subs of a lower quality, but I opted to spend a little more and go with 2 QSC kw122 and 1 kw181....I still have them to this day and they sound just as good as the day I first used them and I still get compliments on my sound...Make smart choices and set a time frame for your return on investment that works for you.

I bought speakers without trying them out but i got QSC K12.2 / K118 and there are a ton of videos about this so i didn't feel like i was making a bad choice... let me tell you i have used them 2 times and i am extremely thankful i did! the major reason why i went with them was interest free financing for 48 months. lol

I see two big mistakes with new DJs buying speakers. Many purchase speakers that are too budget level. They outgrow them in no time. Many gigs require high spl to sound effective, to make the people feel the music and react. Also low powered speakers tend to distort. On the other hand I see many new DJs take their credit cards and buy top of the line stuff. Then 6 months later they discover they hate DJing and the gear is not being used and will soon need to be sold for half of what they paid! I would advise a newbie to get something in the middle. Also avoid old beatup speakers. I also would wait for a sale. Stick to the big boys in the industry if you can such as JBL, EV, QSC, RCF, Yamaha, etc. Talk to other DJs to see if they have extra speakers. Also you can get your tops, do a few gigs and get the subwoofer later. Here is a huge tip ... Stop working for free or almost free. I meet too many broke DJs. Approach this stuff with a business mind. Why should a skilled DJ work fulltime as a maintenance man and part time as a DJ? I see this quite often. Think about building your skills so that you are in the top 10% of your profession. I can almost guarantee you that if people perceive you as being in the top 10% of your profession you will make the big money whether you are a photographer, chef, computer technician or whatever.

Agree with you, I always go thru with the datasheet of the speaker and compare it, then try to find outdoor or indoor review (on youtube, if any) by others and finalize my own within my own budget. Everybody has their own preference and the topic are subjective, some are brand-oriented, some are technical, and some are by experience. You will find an unknown brand out there that sounds good too.

Great replies ! And truth for the experienced D.J.! I know when I cut corners and tried to buy the speaker on a budget. I kicked myself later for not spending the extra few bucks to buy that better speaker! And all your doing is dwelling on it and then trading in your speakers losing money! You get what u pay for! I only recommend Mackie Thumps, Pyle pros, or Harbingers if you are DJing only as a hobby at home or free for a friend’s house instead of for profit unless you are using it as stepping stone equipment for better stuff later. Otherwise get quality equipment. I recommend a pair of Bose S1 pros for tiny events.

Right on man! You rock! Once upon a time companies were honest, like you said specs nowadays are crap, perhaps RMS watts was the most accurate way to compare speakers because it has a scientific base, but not many manufacturers use that anymore and still we have to consider SPL that it's kind of shady managed.

I sold my QSC K series for Yamaha DXR, then eventually Bose F1, now Yamaha DZR (Yamaha's top-end high powered wooden boxes, in line with JBL SRX). I find their highs get really shrill and harsh when pushed above 75%. When mixing bands and events I would always dip out between 2kHz-5kHz.

No, no, no DJ Rick! You were supposed to say a specific brand, and then us commenter's are supposed to agree or eviscerate you for what you say. Now we can't do that. Anyway, excellent recs. Very true, and thanks for the haggle info, I have gone in with "coupons" thinking those help, man, I wish I had looked up info with regards to this years ago. Was able to get what consider good quality sound. Because I don't really consider myself a DJ, I have the entry level EV speakers (ZLX 15's), and one sub (Behringer 15 inch). My stands go quite high so I am glad to have those, because they sound excellent. Would have loved the ETX's, but at 46 years old and not working out like I used to, the ZLX's are nice and light, where as the ETX sounds better and "heavier" but it is also about 20 pounds heavier too. Keep up the good content.

I prefer peaveys they are rugged and can push the limit when it comes to power for 5 + hrs of playing on - for huge events outdoors the sound travels farther where other speakers fail for they are only meant for indoor use - peaveys u can adjust the mid high and lows at will an it will deliver -the only drawback is that is that they are heavy because of the hard casing the speaker magnets MADe in the USA- for small events indoor is use Mackies also made in USA

Note: If someone is planning to get the most out of a small packed sub/speaker Go for horn loaded speakers They might require more tuning but they are the most efficient. A danley sound labs th118 (active or passive its up to the buyer) has a cont output of 141cont danley sound labs is trusted with the decibel ratings, watts and so on.they have a peak of 147 db @141hz Note these beasts are not cheap But these things are 70% the size of the srx828sp and they go louder and throw further.

  • @DJFriendZone

    @DJFriendZone

    4 жыл бұрын

I will agree that horn loaded speakers tend to be more efficient from a power to SPL ratio. However they also have a certain "sound" to them that is entirely different to direct radiating subwoofers. To me, because of the horn, the folded cabs like the TH118 sounds more "compressed" which can be punchier but also sometimes sacrifices LF extension. 147dB at 141hz is a useless number because a subwoofer shouldn't be reproducing 141Hz anyways (the fact that the TH does is part of the bandpass design which is a tradeoff). The SRX828SP will beat the TH118 in SPL at lower frequencies, specifically sub 40Hz. The TH118 also weighs more than the SRX828SP and likely costs more than twice as much. I think the Orbitshifters are a more fair comparison, which are also great. I don't think one is necessarily better they're just different

There design and purpose is completely different. A home tower speaker isnt designed to have as much volume or be used in a wide open environment. You wouldn't use a portable battery blue tooth speaker to do the job of a home tower system. Similar thing when comparing towers to DJ speakers.

All good points Rick. Further to what Rick said on SPL, that is the most inflated spec outside of “watts”. For one, I would much rather have a speaker that can faithfully produce 125db without going into limiting vs. a speaker that claims 131 dB but sound horrific because it’s riding up on its limiters. About watts...another misleading spec as Rick said. Why? More watts does not necessarily mean more output or better sound. Each speaker has an efficiency rating. You will see this on a spec sheet as 97db 1w@1m or 100db 1w/1m etc. With the same input power, the speaker with the higher efficiency will produce more SPL, and the speaker with the higher efficiency will need less power to produce the same output. Also when manufacturers publish SPL numbers they rarely state at what frequency that SPL is achieved, which leads me to my last point. Always look at a speaker’s frequency response chart. You WANT a speaker with a flat response. Wait, did he just say I want speakers that sound flat? No. A speaker with a flat frequency response produces the same SPL at 50Hz as it does at 2kHz., at 4kHz etc. Very few speakers achieve a perfect flat response hence we have DSP and eq’s to deal with that. However, a speaker that achieves a flatter response sound better, more natural and not have the typical peaks and valleys associated with a speaker without a flat response. Remember speakers are tools and these tools need to make you money.

They sound really good to me. The Drm12A really blew me away I think I prefer it to the VRX932LAP (although the VRX can sound nasty around 2.5kHz so perhaps not as big of an achievement). But the 215 sounded really good as well. Hopefully they are super reliable like QSC products; apparently the designer of QSCs original K series made the DRM line

Ibrahim Koroma for the 12.2s, don’t run the limiter. That limiter is right next to the max that speaker can go, and if you hit that red light for too long you’ll blow something, someone renting my stuff did this with a tweeter As for the 212C, or if you ever get any other sub, don’t worry. The limiter on those is fairly low on its output. They are pretty good at staying alive no matter what. Hell, my KW181s have fallen off trucks while driving (failed ratchet strap) and are still going. Generally, don’t redline your equipment. There’s this thing called overexcursion (I think), if you put through sound not meant to be played, it can damage your speakers. Keep it at the orange, or barely poke the red every now and then

I host karaoke events so I need to be mindful that a lot of drunk people use my equipment. I don't see it practical time purchase the best equipment as it costs more to replace if it gets damage. I tried the line if good for the price. I want my clients to get good quality but affordable & available to replace at any time. In case some drunk person spills a drink on the monitor speakers or stumbles and nocks over a speaker stand. So my go to speaker for music & vocal sound quality along with affordable to replace quickly is the Alto ts315. I'd use EV or JBL but price vs risk of damage isn't justified. Plus the Alto ts315 has great clarity and even great bass. Next to a set of EV I can't tell them apart in sound quality.

It’s funny watching people hate on Array Systems. They work great for weddings so long as you use them correctly. I use my RCF Evox 8’s for my weddings of 150 or smaller and my RCF Evox 12’s for weddings up to 400 people. I also own a traditional Qsc Setup (tops and subs) but I hardly ever use them. I get compliments when I use my array systems and complaints when I use the traditional setup. I also own a pair of EV Evolve 50’s (white) but I wouldn’t use them for more than a 125 person wedding. I also have some QSC K8’s that are good for small corporate sound gigs and can be paired with a sub for dance parties. But the arrays definitely shine at weddings.

@@patrickbutlerentertainment5020 I produced sound for a multi-day outdoor EDM festival in the Mojave Desert in October with my four Evox 12s. The event's organizer was concerned that there wouldn't be enough bass. (These folks are used to big folded-horn enclosures loaded with 18-inch drivers.) The four Evox 12s KILLED IT! People were AMAZED that such clear, balanced, high-fidelity sound and monster bass was produced by such 'small' units! RCF manufacturers their own transducers, and owns the digital amp company that's loaded into their pieces. They've been around since 1949. RCF, hands-down, is my go-to brand for quality portable audio engineering!

Sound advice pal. Most of it is common sense and logical thinking. I will hire a pair of speakers I'm interested in buying first and take it from there... unfortunately regardless how much you spend over here in the U.K. on anything electrical no shop/store will negotiate a lower price to what they are advertised at. And if your paying on 0% finance they push up the price. Propper lame over here.

You should never buy cheap speakers if your using them to do Gigs, especially if you're getting Payed to do it. You should consider using Mid-level speakers, cheap speakers will easily blow because of the low quality maybe it happens in the middle of a Gig, pray it's not a Wedding then you probably get sued, and have to sell your low budget blowed speakers for parts on Ebay!🙄

90% of all mobile djs can get by on 90% of their gigs with two point source tops and one 18” sub. Add another sub for larger gigs. No one needs a vertical array. Horizontal arrays for dance floors larger than 300. Anything other than that is just djs thinking there is a better way to make a wheel and that a new piece of gear is just what they need.
