After watching many video tutorials for this braid I came across this one and it is by far the best for explaining, and demonstrating. Thank you! The “tips” on figuring out where you are in the 4 step pattern should one get lost (easy to do) did seem somewhat confusing -but I discovered my own method; which relates to the point made about backtrack 1 strand at a time. I simply look at the bottom most strand and see where it came from. Did it come from under 2, over 2 etc. Once the steps are down it is easy to tell which one I was on and proceed from there.

I prefer to braid in front rather than going around the back. There are four separate moves here but if you look at it closely you’ll see that there are two basic moves and their negatives. This will also be much easier if you clamp down your strings to a table top with a c-clamp. You can fold four strings in the middle and place them over a hook or c-clamp a key-snap hook to a table top and drape the 4 strings in the middle over the snap hook. It’s easier to get consistent tension on your strings this way. No energy is wasted on having to hold the strings while you braid. You can also divide your colored strings so all the same colored strings are all on one sided. It’s a much more interesting result.

Thanks for the vids! Approximately what is the ratio for each cord length starting length to foot of finished braid with moderate tension? (not real tight) ie: 3:2

Try braiding in a flat manner with 4 strands each hand being sure keeping the braid straight from twisting on ya Jake

Dman can you please tell me where the video is for the 8 strand flat braid for doing the handle for your dog leash? I do not know how to do that part and then getting back to the final part tying that back in? Thanks for any help or if someone can help me out it would be appreciated.

Do you have any tips for making this braid with more than two colors? I've been trying to make it with 4 for jump rope handles for my daughter and I just can't seem to get it. I don't know if its the extra colors that are confusing me or something else...

Cheers for the lesson. I just found an easy way to remember the orders of the 'u2,o2 - o1,u2,o1 - o2,u2 - u1,o2,u1' etc etc. LEFT LEADS. If your left strand started with an under pass, your next right strand will be an under pass also. So long as you remember the left strand does 3 passes & the right does 2, it's plain sailing. Hope that doesn't confuse anyone further, but it works well for me.

Is it normal for the 2 color 8 strand gaucho braid to twist? I've made 3 leashes following your videos and they all twist. I was wondering if I'm making them too tight or not tight enough. Thanks for the tutorials.
