This is actually very good information. I would like to add 2 things though: female bettas can and often will have long, flowy fins, especially as they age. A young veiltail female's tail may be less than 1/4" but as she grows, it may get over 1" long! Yes, it's true that makes will have longer fins overall, but this isn't always a good way to determine gender. In fact, I once had a female dumbo (she had underdeveloped eyes) with a tail over an inch long! It was as long as a male delta betta's tail. So, "a female betta's fins will always be short" is wrong unless, like in males, she is a plakat. Another common misconception is "females are much smaller than males." This is usually not true and in fact, female giant bettas exist and can be 3-5" long! The truth is, females are sold younger in pet stores. The males are 6-18 months, females 3-8 months! Males develop a bit quicker, meaning that a male of the same age will have longer fins and be more vibrant *initially.* However often males are a problem; their overly long, heavy fins can cause the fish to suffocate or die from stress-related illness! Overall, I'm a HUGE female betta fan. I've been a betta fish rescuer for over 11 years so I know my stuff. If anyone's interested in buying or adopting a betta, don't disregard the females! They can be just as beautiful, vibrant, flowy (and aggressive) as males!

Hey! You seem to know female Bettas pretty well. I've been thinking of getting myself a Betta fish, i'm a beginner and I've never owned a fish but I have done my research on tank size, cycling, filters, water temp etc. I noticed that females are kinda underrated so if I could, I would get a female, but my question is- are female Bettas harder to take care of than males? And do they lay eggs or need some special care? Can females be kept alone just like males?

@@lookbothways5104 some females make bubble nests if they are really happy. they make bubble nests at their own pace, some bettas do it once every day, others may do it once every 6 months.

Usually it looks as white in edges. Do check edges whether any noticeable small spilts. If no spilts or signs of damage, you are good. 👍

Are both eyes look blue? Try feeding food in different area and see whether he pick it correctly. May be there reflection on the bowl that he flare against it. Checkout. Change the light source or place, if needed

Usually no. All bettas in petstore are mostly adult. But give him proper tank and feed healthy diet, he will get to better shape in no time.

I felt so sorry for him I changed his tank to a 50L tank added some ramshorn snails which perked him up then I added 6 pygmy corys, which he seemed to like also. He never flares at them and they like to swim around him sometimes:) He is less lonely:)

Sorry to hear that. Check with shop what they fed. Try the same food. If you have access to live feed, give a try. If not.. give try with mosquito, banana fly or small ant to see whether he picky eater or having some problem.
