Because Betas are territorial fish. If you already have a Beta and plan on adding other fish, ALWAYS remove your Beta and isolate him for a few hours. While Beta is isolated, rearrange the tank. Move all plants, decorations and such around to new locations and then add the new fish. Let the new fish settle down and then reintroduce the Beta into the tank. Then he is not thinking his territory is being invaded by uninvited guests. He comes into a territory that is already occupied and has to settle his spot in it. When having a Beta in with fish he doesn't know he will be a bit on edge seeing what the other fish will tolerate from him LOL Betas are awesome and aside from guppies, are my favourite fish!

yup! but it's important to pay attention to your betta personality, sometimes they are really that aggressive that they're start chasing and biting other tankmates. i've had try this method year ago for my betta fish, his tankmates was some chi cardinal tetras. he has been a chill betta for six months/from I bought him from fish store, and I am surprised when I put him in a brand new tank and those tetras, and he freaked out like crazy and started to chase others and trying to bit them. It doesn't take a minute from he was acclimated to the new tank for me to take him out immediately.

I just setup a 10 gallon tank and after a week of running a sponge filter and several plants, I put in one male betta and a panda Cory. They were both cool and got along fine. A week later I put in 3 neon tetras and 1 male flame orange guppy. The betta was fine with the tetras, but kept following the guppy and flaring his gills at the guppy. So I took the guppy out and put him in my 65 gallon community tank. Everything is peaceful in the 10 gallon now.

Not completely true. As Male Betas age, they become less active and it becomes a struggle to move around. Filtration systems in larger tanks creates a more aggressive flow from aging large fin fish. A young and healthy Beta will do fine with in 10 to 20 gallon, some even tolerate mates, you will even see them "play" in the filter flow. When they get older, especially Delta's and Crowntails it's wise to downgrade them into a solitary 3 - 5 gallon real low flow tank, or even better no flow at all, just plants and weekly water changes.

I keep my betta in a 10 gallon planted with 6 harlequin rasboras. I've had the tank up and running for over a year now. At first, the betta loved to chase the rasboras. I've had similar experiences with smaller rasboras, exclamation mark rasboras in particular. In a 10g densely planted tank I've put 10 of these tiny guys and my otherwise peaceful female betta started to single out the slowest one right away. Unfortunately she broke the spine of the poor soul before they even had a chance to group up into a school. She ignores the rasboras at daylight and acts like the most peaceful betta but as soon as I turn the lights off she goes into chasing them fiercley for a couple of minutes and then she calms down again and goes to sleep in her favorite corner. Do not ever trust bettas at night. They might do nasty things to their smaller tank mates while the lights are off. At the same time my male betta in another 10g tank loves the company of 6 funny pigmy corydoras that dash up and down in the water column in a group. The male betta that previously attacked even the snails just loves these guys. Also I noticed that if I regularly feed bettas with live food they tend to be less agressive with their tank mates. At least once or twice a week. Frozen food does help too.

I have been in the hobby for about 2 years and I finally have 7 bettas. Two of them I've had for about a year. It took me forever to figure out what was killing all my bettas. I discovered that in the pet stores they don't keep the water very clean. And in the past when I took them to the store to purchase whatever they needed because it was obvious that they were sick the workers would just tell me all know they're fine and they wouldn't recommend any products for me. Thankfully I finally found the products that work to sort of quarantine my fish and now hopefully I'll have seven healthy fish..

African dwarf frogs make unusual but surprisingly good tank mates for a beta fish . They get a little pushy around food. But they never hurt the fish. They are not that bad and they will float at the still water surface along with the beta fish. Sometimes the fish will get a little annoyed with them, but they will not get hurt. Neon tetras are also great rank mates for beta fish. They are shy and small fish. The beta will never be harmed by them.

I'm planning on adding a one or two more fish, maybe a dwarf cory or two but I set that up first then added my betta after it was established and have had not an issue yet, he's really happy so far.

I am with you on Gouramis ... had to return my powder blue dwarf gourami male as he was viscous, and had a honey gourami who terrorised everyone. While I think they are some of the prettiest fish, they are usually terrors in a community tank. Now I steer clear of them. My centrepiece fish are a male and female pair of balloon rams, with plenty of plants in a 33g tank. They each have claimed their own territory and are fine. Sometimes they do a face off (which is quite comical really) right in the middle of the tank, but otherwise don’t annoy other tank mates, although they can be a bit pushy when food is involved.

Cory catfish are one of my favorite fish. I remember when I was a kid, my dad kept a huge nicely set up 200 gallon fish tank with some Corys in it. Eventually we got down to only needing one for that tank though because in the 3-4 years we had it, it grew to 14 inches long. Ended up donating it to a huge pet sanctuary/store because it outgrew that huge tank and we needed to move anyway. We also kept some schooling fish and many other chill fish in there. But my dad always had the rule of only 1 betta. Unfortunately the bettas never lasted long, I think being around so many other fish stressed them out too much even if they had plenty of room to roam. Now I have my own betta though in a little semi-planted 5.5 gal with a few ghost shrimp that I introduced last night and so far he seems chill with them. As long as they don't steal his food or get too close to him while he naps, he seems fine with them!

My Betta loves his tank mates as well. He lives with Neon Tetras, Gold Tetras and Lambchop Rasboras for schooling nano fish, he sometimes schools with them. He also lives with a Gold Doubloon Molly, which I was skeptical about at first but they get along fine and haven't shown any aggression toward each other. He also has 2 Cory Catfish. I was so happy to hear you could give the betta fish tank mates. It added some spice to the fish tank and it gave the betta some company.

Our betta Happy has become used to his little snail roommie Rock, but for the first couple days he tried flaring at it occasionally until he just lost interest at the total lack of reaction. And live plants plus a snail really seems to balance the environment well.

I tried to keep my betta with endlers, nipping was an issue, same with glowlight tetras specifically. Other tetras and rasboras were fine, so were catfish. As long as you have plenty of terrain objects (hardscape and plants) to break line of sight, tank size should not be an issue, I kept a betta alone in a 14 gallon for over a year, and he rarely ever explored beyond a diameter of five inches from his favorite spot, and I kept another betta with other fish in a 4 gallon tank without aggression ever being an issue. In my experience, boredom is more often a cause for aggression than stress, so keeping the aquarium layout interesting is half the job done.

I just wanted to say Thank you your videos have helped us so much with the setup of our tank. My son is super excited to finally go get a Betta today. He's been waiting a few weeks since we had to wait for the tank to establish itself, but your videos have been so helpful and informative. Since he really had his heart set on getting a Betta even though it's his first fish. I really had to do my homework since I have never really taken care of a fish besides little 25 cent feeder fishes when I was little and it was mainly my dad that took care of them. Also, Soundwave was my favorite decepticon, awesome name for fish.

I’d say it really depends on the betta, some bettas are able to live in 10 gallons completely alone, while other bettas can live in a 10 gallon and not be bothered by the other fish. It all can be determined by wether or not your betta will be able to live with others by observing them when they see their reflection. I often see veil tail bettas flaring often? I’m not sure.

My current betta is pretty chill, I got him a small group of neocaradinia shrimp and a snail to keep him company, they have plenty of places to hide from the fish if they want to in the driftwood and leaf litter and some ceramic hides but he seems to mostly not care that they are there even when they’re right in front of him and he notices them stealing his bloodworms.

I'll keep the 5 gallon betta tank running just in case it does not work out. I do have a question though. I wanted to add some ballon mollies & the dalmatian ones as well. Out of my seven bettas I have/had (currently have 4, rip Snowball, Orion, & Crusoe), Polaris is the ONLY Crowntail I've been able to keep with other fish. Crusoe, who was a Veiltail, could also be kept with other fish. Snowball, Venus, Pluto, and Mercury, my females, have all been jerks to every other fish I've put with them. I've got Venus separately in her own 5 gallon (soon to be upgraded) to while Pluto and Mercury are in a split 20 with twin Sumo loaches that hang out together and burrow under the divider. It's hilarious that my females were/are more aggressive than my males. Orion (my first CT) just liked the space to himself, while Polaris hates being alone, which is ironic because Polaris came from a cup.
