Good advice! I'll add three more. 1. Consider getting travel vests with zippered internal pockets. 2. Carry _on paper not just your phone_ the toll-free number for your credit card company and call them immediately. And yes, paper can get lost, so maybe pen that number inside your shoes. 3. Act like a cop rather than a tourist. Continually scan your surroundings, practicing what cops call situational awareness. That includes turning around suddenly as well as staring hard at someone who looks suspicious. The last doesn't mean such people are necessarily thieves. The best thieves will look innocent. It just makes clear to a thief studying you that you're thinking about his sort.

I saw a recent video that alerted me to the existence of a new device that can use technology to pick up PIN codes from the heat of your fingers on the buttons of ATMs or check out machines. The recommendation was to put your fingers or palm on other buttons to leave a heat signature to confuse the device. Thank you for your many tips and protective ideas for travelers. I stopped putting my address on my luggage tags years ago. I only put my name, phone number and email address. I put the same on a card inside my suitcase right on top. I’m bad at putting my phone on the table…I’ll have to change that. Thanks so much for your excellent tips.❤️🇺🇸

This is still enough info for a SIM swap to hack your bank or do a reverse phone search. I suggest putting a nonsense 10-digit number on the tag you use to report the bag if lost or misrouted. Delayed bags are seldom returned on tag info alone. Or, get a second "burn" phone number/SIM you just keep for this use. Lufthansa sells luggage that has electronic checking labels and a code for your identity.

Reduce the number of credit cards you travel with, but bring more than one. Then, only carry one with you when out and leave any others locked up. Also bring some of your home currency with you for expenses at the beginning and end of your trip and leave that locked up as well while out of the country.

These are great tips and reminders. When at restaurants, I wrap the purse strap around my leg. Sporting events were mentioned. I can tell you that at the Allianz Arena in Munich, they don't allow any bags bigger than a very small purse. They even have a frame such that if your purse doesn't fit through it, you will have to put it in a locker. Oktoberfest was similar but a smidgen more lenient...you could have a 'normal' sized purse, but you could NOT have say a beach bag sized bag - again, they will make you 'check' it into a locker. Museums the same story. That's why I was very happy with my Pacsafe small purse. I have their "normal" size purse and the small one. It's also kinda more comfortable to walk around the city with just the small bag instead of a heavier bag.

When you are told to put all your items in a plastic bin, then go through the security scanner, is a time when thieves can grab your belongings; my girlfriend had her iPad stolen from her plastic bin while going through one of those scanners.

Nothing is safe in those plastic bins. My husband had his new iPhone stolen that way. He made a ruckus at the airport. The police was called and all he asked was for the security tape to be reviewed which TSA was refusing to do. He refused to budge. Police then told him that they will personally review the tape and not to miss his connecting flight. Around midnight our home phone rang and it was the airport police. I was so confused cuz hubby had not made it home and I wasn’t aware of the theft. Luckily I heard him pulling into the driveway and I handed the phone to him. Yes after reviewing the tape, the TSA handler was the one that took the phone. We asked for it to be mailed to us but was told the TSA budget did not allow them to mail stuff. Had to call my brother in law who lived in that state to get the phone from the precinct and mailed to us.

6:32 Consider putting a tracking tag in your bags (Apple AirTag, Samsung SmartTag - whatever matches your phone). This is useful for locating checked baggage if it goes astray. Further, it gives you some chance of giving a location to the authorities if a bag is stolen - though many thieves are now aware of these tags and will try to find them or will keep the contents and ditch the bag to get rid of a tag.

  • @mrslcom

    @mrslcom

    Жыл бұрын

The trouble with theses tags is that they will warn the thief that the stolen item contains a tracking tag, in order to prevent people from stalking others. Apple prioritize anti-stalking over anti-theft. The tag could also beep when it is uncoupled from its owner after a certain period of time. These tags were designed to prevent people from losing their belongings, not to prevent theft.

These are good tips. The cell phone getting snatched is a real thing, I know of someone this happened to while traveling. There are countries that are more lenient about motorcycles riding on sidewalks or alleys, so it's easy to grab a phone or bag and take off. I usually buy a cheap unlocked phone to put foreign sim cards in, but I like taking photos with my regular phone. I have a strap, but need a sturdier strap like the one in this video.

I more than just agree with your advice to empty your wallet of all cards and passes you will not need for your trip. This eliminates all the follow up cancellations and replacements for cards you didn’t need in the first place. So, my wallet only has two credit cards. Two, in case one gets compromised while traveling. A small amount of the local currency. Usually up to $200 worth for taxis, lunches, tips. Any larger purchases should be on a credit card. My drivers license and insurance card. I keep my wallet in my front pocket, never a back pocket and if in more crowded areas I keep my hand on my wallet at all times. If I need to carry my passport which some countries require I keep it with the wallet in my pocket with my hand in both. If I am traveling with a backpack and am having lunch in a restaurant I put one of my chair legs and one of my legs through one of the shoulder straps. I also have scans of my drivers license, passport, insurance card in my luggage

Luggage tags....valid point as to indicating an empty house, but to avoid that and reduce possible hassles, put the address of your destination on the way out, Home address on the way back. If you’re going away somewhere and your bag gets misplaced, it’s better to have it arrive late where you’re going than go back to your home where you are not. Edit - DO NOT use caribinas attached to belt loops! They are easier to remove than dipping a bag or pocket, and if you put the item in a pocket attached to a caribina on a belt loop, you’re just making it easier to lift as the thief now has a handle and doesn’t need to put fingers into a pocket. BAD idea!

Thanks for the great tips! I do not use luggage tags for 2 reasons ... 1) I don't want them getting caught up/hung up while conveyoring down to the plane or area they are collected in order to load on to the plane. 2) no one needs my personal info at any time. Ever try ripping an airport checked bag tag ... very difficult. If the bag is lost that checked bag tag will be sufficient for anyone who finds it to return it to an airport where it will be problem solved much quicker. I use and rfid, slash resistant cross body travel bag that also has locking zippers. The bag is small, and very deep making it very hard for an unzipper quick reach in event.

One thing yuou should do with ATMs regardless of where they are, and this sounds dumb but makes sense.... after you are doine with the ATM, touch all of the buttons on the number pad in a random order. This helps fool thermal imaging devices( that people can get quite easily online) and is a way that some theives can figure out someone's pin number. It looks dumb, but makes sense when you think about it. It would be best if you didn't have to enter a pin at all, and if you can, when shopping or paying, see if you can pay either with a credit card, or use your debit card like a credit card (my bank's debit card can act like a credit card so I don't have to ever enter a pin when making a purchase).

I'm a big fan of using reinforced packs when travaling in pickpocket-prone areas. I use a backpack from Pacsafe that has locking zippers, a stainless steel mesh under the outer nylon layer of the pack body to prevent it from being slashed, and steel wires imbedded in the straps to make them difficult to cut. There are other companies making reinforced packs, so anyone should be able to find a bag that matches their style.

I am not saying having a strap attached to your phone is a bad idea, but be aware that a thief might not always notice it, and if said thief is on a motorcycle and grabs your phone, you might end up getting dragged down the street. If you are walking along a street, keep your phone, purse, etc. on your side facing away from the street. This will make it harder for that motorcycle riding thief to grab your belongings.

I always take $100-$160, crisp bills (don’t take worn bills. That’s not typical in other countries) when I travel more than 2 weeks. If your card doesn’t work, you can exchange for the local currency. An employee at a restaurant swiped my card so hard and often, he ruined it. Luckily, it was the near the end of my trip, and I was able to exchange enough to continue having a good time. Luggage tag, I write the address of my destination, where they can deliver my bag and my email. I fold it over, and on the front I write “look inside for location details”. When I’m going home, I swap it out for my home address and ph #.

I never use ATMS overseas, I always go into the bank to withdraw cash, if the tell says they can't withdraw money just go to another bank but most banks are happy to do that for you. In Australia you can withdraw cash at the post office and the supermarket, 100% safer and convenient.

I use a carabineer on the back of my phone and attach it to a vest. I keep everything attached to the vest because I am a dog walker and have dropped or lost my phone, my keys, client keys, my water bottle, etc. I also keep some nicer vests for travel that do not have the pockets filled with dog treats.

Hi, I ❤ your videos. I have an off subject question. I am terrified of flying, but because of family I have to fly/travel one to two times a year (I have to fly next week!😬) long haul flights, between Colombia and Arkansas. 2 stops each way. I hate take offs, landings, and going through clouds. The only thing I like at all is flying at night and seeing moon and the lights below. Is there anything I can do to not be so scared??

Great content as always for a Sunday morning. I wonder why an external luggage tag is even needed? What I have done is put contact info on a card that is easy seen from the inside of my luggage, I think if the bag is lost they would open it to look for identification anyway.

I try to use an ATM at an open bank - this way if the card isn't returned I can go inside and have them retrieve it. Even at home, I keep a folded $20 in my wallet in case I didn't realize I spent most of my cash - anything costing more than $20 can likely be paid for with a credit card. When out of the country, a couple of $100, kept in a smaller wallet than I would normally carry at home and kept in front pocket. Also use a small multi-zipper bag that I can slip my normal belt through - very theft proof this way. Keep phone and some essentials (like folding glasses/earplugs/breath mints/etc.) in it.

I always carry a cheap decoy wallet with counterfeit or fake currency for the country and visiting. That way if someone steals the decoy wallet, they will get arrested or in serious trouble when they try to use that counterfeit money at a store. And technically this is perfectly okay because you yourself are not going to use that counterfeit or fake money. So in a sense, you are attempting to scam the scammer and trying to get them in trouble.

Here's another tip. Be aware that thieves will follow you a great distance if they see you pocket your wallet or cash. It happened to me in Lisbon. I used my wallet in a train station, and was followed for about an hour before they hit. One in front stops suddenly, one behind bumps into you, and they're gone before you know it. They are well organized, and they hang around places like stations for a good reason. The local police know exactly who they are, and consider the theft to be a tourist tax. (I'm looking at you Lisbon.)
