The depression ended in 1933, but the US did try to keep a small military. The US didn't start building up until WW2 got worse(about 2-3 years before they joined). 1939 was when the US saw the whole fiasco, and started building forces, mainly navy.

The US was still militarily powerful, especially in it's navy. It's army wasn't large, but it definitely outranks Poland and China in overall strength. Keep in mind this normally includes industry.

US tanks force had less than 500 tanks in its service, which were around the same quality as the Japanese. Its US armed forces had thought some 4900 planes, some of these were modern. Though the majority of them were outdated, over 2000 of them were even bi-planes. In 1939 the US Navy had 15 battleships, 5 aircraft carriers, 36 cruisers, 127 destroyers, 58 submarines. Many of these ships were thought outdated for more than a decade. Their army wasn’t even properly mechanised at the time, not to ignore they had less troops than the army of Portugal had at the time, with 190,000 servicemen.

@@seanbyrne7927 just by having loads of money and supplies won’t decide if you are the top superpower, what determines your political hierarchy is a nations geographical positioning between factions. china isn’t as fortunate as the US, which is why the US stands where it is today. it’s nearly untouchable, while china is bordered by countries on all fronts especially the east and southeastern borders. china may have a great economy but they have no control over the seas or their bordering neighbors while the US has 2 borders, one being a very good ally and friend, canada; and one being another really good ally and friend, mexico. while mexico poses no threat because they don’t have much spendings in defensive forces, canada does. but canada is and has always been a great ally to us. China shares close borders with americas strongest asian allies, so if a world war were to ever breakout and china wasn’t in the coalition, they’d be overpowered rendering their potential as a “new superpower” as none.

I'm happy to see France. The world often forgets that during World War II, even though France lost to the Germans, it was at the time the greatest power in Europe during World War I. The world also forgets the fact that France had lost 4% of this population during the First World War but also 15% of the men who became disabled. And despite all that, she was still trying to defend herself. although the land is in German hands. It's a safe bet that if England or the United States were in the same state as France post ww1, they would have lost.

Our american history books show poles as heros who fought the NAZI's for as long as they could. It shows that they fought hard but the NAZI's were too strong. Even afterwards they didn't give up. Poles began a heavy resistance. We are told Jewish and non Jewish poles both do tremendous to the German oppressors. You may be surprised both poles are shown as heros in our American history textbooks.

@mentreX no, our books cover the battles. The overview of the war, leading up to it, what happened during it, what happened as aftermath, and some contributions groups like women and black people made to the American side of the ww2 fight. They talk about Brits fight back with the RAF, but at max they have a paragraph about that so it's not that much. We also extensively cover the holocaust and the resistance the poles put up.
