The title “actors who went to extreme lengths…” is a misnomer. It sounds like actors who, for example, go on dangerous crash diets to lose dangerous amounts of weight or do something physically permanent to one’s body for a single roll. We’ve seen actors do this and it’s moronic. Ashton Kutcher appears to be the only one in this list that did anything similar to that. The rest didn’t particularly go to extreme lengths; they had extreme things happen TO them accidentally.

Used to love me some Liquid TV so was certainly intrigued by the Aeon Flux movie. Granted, it wasn’t that great but I’ve seen far worse and Theron certainly earns her action star chops that’d later be utilised in Atomic Blonde and Fury Road (oh, and the Crossfire music video!) As for The Lone Ranger I’ve long considered it to be hugely underrated and no worse than the numerous unnecessary Pirates sequel. Yes, it’s dark tone makes it, like Verbinski’s awesome Rango, not particularly kiddie friendly and the casting of Armie Hammer in the titular role may have seemed great at the time but … well, you know the rest … but it’s still visually impressive, entertaining and has a spectacular action sequence finale! And finally Super Mario Brothers, another film that’s too often unfairly lambasted. Sure, it’s an utterly bizarre, twisted, dark and flawed use of Nintendo’s mascots but taken on its own merits is still a decent enough film with some fun scenery chewing by Dennis Hopper, some superb production design and a fond reminder of the days where huge, expansive sets were still built practically and not just shot on green screen and painted in with CGI. So whether those three films warrant near paralysis, equine injury and/or multiple stabbing is questionable but it didn’t stop me from watching them and, in some way, rather enjoying them.

Aeon Flux is quite a good film, but the top 'suffered for their art' ward must go to Christian Bale for The Machinist, would many actors starve themselves as much as he did? Nope, bluescreen here we come!

But those people applaud when Idris Elba plays a Norse God or English Hero so ... Somehow I think all the punishment that Cena experienced in his "pro wrestling" career would be absolutely trivial compared to falling even 20 feet onto a concrete sidewalk (or even through those scaffolding boards). Even jumping into a deep lake from a 20 foot overhang has resulted in people breaking their backs and necks and legs from the impact.

Aeon Flux didn't do well at the box office because Charlize Theron wore too many cloths as Aeon Flux. The original Aeon Flux from the animated show ran around in a sling shot bikini all day, and the Aeon Flux world had a story line that was far more aesthetic than the mindless 80's style action/James Bond thing they tried in the movie. BTW, putting Johnny Depp as Tonto was disrespectful? "Whitewashing"? Putting your racist comments aside for a second didn't they do the same thing with Catwoman/Halle Barry, and just about every other movie they race swapped an African American for a Caucasian role?
