Regarding blending colored pencils with water: there are two special types that DO blend with water. Watercolor and Derwent’s Inktense. Though I admit they are an exception, but they do exist and are a lot of fun to use.

What you're talking about are NOT colored pencils. Colored pencils are wax and oil based, what you're talking about are watercolor pencils. Watercolor pencils and colored pencils are not the same

To me, coloured pencils sounds like an over category of coloured leads that are in a pencil to distinguish them from the graphite pencils that are often just called pencils. And that could include pastel coloured pencils and water-soluble coloured pencils that only have modified waxes and oils to make them paintable, but not completely different binders like pastel coloured pencils for example that also have some kind of gummi traganth binder and kaolin like pastels and are just harder.

@@lisa4471 But for beginners that's tricky because its really easy to end up with watercolour pencils instead and they do work as colour pencils as well. I totally agree they aren't the same but the difference when use dry is not not much different to the difference between different brands of wax or oil based ones. I suppose what I'm saying is there is a big overlay at least for a beginner and I'm sure there are people watching this thinking but my pencils blend with water??? so at least mentioning they exist might have been helpful.

Saying those are colored pencils is like saying pastel pencils and tinted charcoal pencils are color pencils as well. Just because they are in pencil format doesn't mean they are the same. Just like you don't call oil paint and watercolor paint just "paint" and consider it to be the same.

One thing that annoys me quite a bit is comparing oil based to wax based pencils, they just work differently, even if they seem so similar. I like to compare them to watercolour (oil based and more transparent) and to gouache (wax based and more opaque). People have their preferences, of course, but nobody would compare gouache from one brand to watercolour from another. It happens all the time with Polychromos and Prismacolours, which just isn’t fair. Polychromos are much more transparent than the opaque Prismacolors, which is especially true for the much vilified Polychromos white.

Yup. Sadly too many sponsored colourists do t what she did here to make herself cash by advertising separate advertising co. This woman just negated a bunch of great techniques to sell a liquid blender. Buy good pencils, yup crayola blend, but the more cash you pay the longer you practice and the more courses you do to learn more techniques then your art will improve hugely. Listen to utubers like tis and you will seriously struggle to get past primary school lvl drawing, well more likely you will be stuck colouring in easy kid books. People like her are using pyramid schemes to get rich quick. Guarantee she will ban me within 24 hours. Go buy the best pencils you can afford, then go look and draw what you see, people like her just want your money most of her facts are absolutely wrong

She's only giving tips and showing a whole host of different ways to use pencils, and that you don't need to spend a lot of money to have fun using coloured pencils. Not everything is a scam you know lol. This video isn't advertising any brand, otherwise it'd say so (by law). Just so you know.

I tend to use charcoal pencils for deep matte black and graphite b4-b6 for pieces I intend to burnish because it has a natural shine.

I drew a raven. Due to the fact other then the shine on its wings and the beak it’s all black from the angle I was drawing bit at I used a lotta black 😝

I never ever use black, whether it be color pencil, oils, or watercolor for blending. However, if you use it like a highlight to bring focus onto an area I can see that. But I never use it to blend.

I've got some odorless mineral spirits that I've been meaning to try one of these days. I also love how you mention using another medium as a base layer. Alcohol Based Markers are one of my favorites to use alongside colored pencils. I often like to say that "Colored pencils are a medium for patient people, but I still use them anyway." You are like the goddess of colored pencils, your work is just outstanding!

I remember reading somewhere (idr where) that I should never use black color pencils so I ended up using a rly dark blue nd when I layered on top of it, it became an ashy blue. It looked terrible 😭 After using some of your tutorials I became a lot better! Thank you for your video's! They helped me a lot. Specially the charcoal ones!

People often misunderstand the "Don't use black" advice. It doesn't mean don't ever use a black pencil (or paint). It just means 1. Don't grab black when you are trying to make a colour darker, it might look really black to you but layering black over a colour where you want it to be dark is what makes things look flat and 2. Don't only use straight black all the time. Try to incorporate other colours because a lamp black or ivory black on it's own is pretty boring. Mix your own black when possible. But if the colour you need is literally just black like on tiger stripes, go for it. It's not terribly different from the advice of not using straight up white for your lightest value all the time. It doesn't mean never use white. It just means if your lightest value is always white and your darkest value is always black the whole thing looks pretty boring and flat.

@@wowmequeen7393 exactly. There are plenty of cases where a regular black is exactly what you need and there's really no benefit in mixing it yourself apart from practicing mixing. Sure, there's plenty of other colours in a black bird too. But some of it will just be black and whether you mix that yourself or use a black makes no difference.

i think black is also very important for contrast. because when you have black and white in a drawing you use the most possible contrast. but like you its nice to use other colors below or on top of it ^_^ to make it more realistic and interesting

Cool dass du auch kommentierst, bei deinen Bildern kann man ja auch gut sehen dass es zu sehr realistischen Bildern führt auch wenn man schwarz nutzt. Ich glaube dass sich das schwarz Ding aus der Meinung gebildet hat dass man für Gesichter eher zu einem dunklen braun in den Schatten greifen soll wie zu schwarz. Aber spätestens für die Augen braucht man einfach schwarz finde ich.

@@heyblondie9499 🤗 man kann sich auch schwarz selbst "er mischen" indem man rot gelb und blau zusammen mixt also die Grundfarben. Ist natürlich aber deutlich mehr Aufwand. Da kann man lieber schwarz nehmen und daruternoder drüber ne andere Farbe ein wenig legen. 🤗👌

I personally like watercolours more than coloured pencils but I sometimes use coloured pencils to add a little bit of detail✏️🖌

About the black pencil, you don’t have to use it to color in black areas. In fact, if any part of your drawing has been done with only one colored pencil, there is probably something wrong with it. So, I use black, white and grey and even brown sometimes to create colors that are less bright. With experience one can use any color like that. And about the blending, I prefer to work with watercolor pencils. To me they are the perfect cross between watercolors and colored pencils and they can be blended with water.

This is a GREAT video of encouragement. I have this little cheap set of watercolor pencils. You have lifted me up and dismayed the very myths I was trying to work through. Thank you.

One way to mix/ blend colored pencils is that depending on some brands you can rub it in. This will spread all over your fingers and may get quite warm vast. I also find it best if your hands are humid.

I find it annoying when manufacturers say their coloured pencils are 'professional', but then they aren't lightfast, so you can't make art to sell using them.

Would using uv glass or something like Mr. Super Clear UV flat/gloss help?

I have asthma so I can't use oil solvents because of the fumes, but I do use those colourless alcohol marker blenders if I want to give my coloured pencil drawings and softer look

Hey Kirsty, would you consider doing a video where you compare just the 12-packs /or the 24-packs) of the more common colour pencil brands (Polychromos, prismacolour, Caran d'ache etc.) Which gives the best colour range and which can be layered for the most other colours etc. I find most comparison videos use the biggest sets, but that's not always feasible for budgets that are smaller but still have at least some room for the quality stuff.

Oil based colored pencils can be layered a lot more than wax based. Polychromos and Caran d’Ache luminance are oil based.

YES! I recently bough a giant 280 pack because I love having so many colors, yeah maybe you don't NEED that many colors but it's FUN! I sorted them all by color and it was the most satisfying thing ever!

When drawing all I really use is crayola. I do have to layer it a bit more than my better brand pencils but they work the same and at the end of the day I still have a nice piece of art.

My problem with Crayolas isn’t that I can’t get the same results is that colouring hurts my hands so I need softer pencils such as prismas and Coloursofts .

Hey Kirsty! Before, I actually tried putting normal (non watercolor pencils) color pencils in water.. It didn't blend but it gave a very very dark hue almost like a paint, It kind of just ruined my water and my pencils for sometime.. It was fun though!

I know with oil painting people say to use linseed oil, but I discovered when learning how to paint with oils at the age of 11, that I'm allergic to linseed oil

TBH I have watercolor pencils, they do exits and are fun to use You can just dip them in water and blend or first blend them with a wet paintbrush.

Hi, thanks for all your great advice...I want to do a portrait with white pencils on black paper... Would you recomand to use white pencils or white pastel pencils. I find difficult to get a good coverage with pastels, I tried before and I don t like much the result..I put manny coats and still the black paper is visible... Actually if you keep your colour pencils in warm water for sometime then it gets soft and its easier to blend (btw i use faber castle so idk if it works with other pencils)

Well blending Supracolour is working

I think the idea of cheap coloured pencils others were thinking about are the really really cheap ones I have a set of very cheap coloured pencils and no matter what I do with them I can not get them to buildup over each other the pencil core is so hard it’s like using a 6H pencils The cheap pencils you mentioned may be cheap but the core of the pencil works on the paper nicely where as the cheap Chinese pencils that my husband bought me just don’t work I would not even give them to children to use they are that bad it would turn the child off colouring for good. They only good thing I can do with the pencils that were given to me is to put them into a resin project once I have removed the coloured core from the wood. I have always used Fiber-Castell and Derwent as my go to for colouring with pencils and for the first time in my life I have finally splurged out and bought myself some water coloured pencils and the new Ink ones by Derwent and I just love them so much I have never been able to do water coloured paintings and for the first time I have done just that I sat and coloured my picture and then sat with a fine paint brush and went over my drawing and it changed from a coloured pencil drawing into a nice water coloured picture. I have always used oil paints in my artwork or coloured pencils or even crayons the first time I tried to do a water coloured picture I just could not get the shading right lol me Aunty is the water colour expert in the family and even she had trouble teaching me the art of water coloured painting. Now I can do it the cheat way and I’m loving in it😹😹😹 Loved your video I had heard of some of these myths and just shook my head in 🤦🏽‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️ disbelief

I have a question about color pencils. So I was trying layer my Crayola pencils and when I was drawing it the paper started to reject the pencils that I was putting down. The more I would try and fix those spots or working around those spots the paper would ruin the other parts of the colors and it would be these white giant holes where color used to be. So is there a way to prevent this from happening?

There is color water pencil that do exist at sertain art stores . This is what most people use when they are using water ,and pencils. Your /her art is amazing truly beautiful.
