The chapters of the AAPC CPC textbook are based heavily on the coding guidelines of the ICD 10 coding book. When I took the online course I had my textbook next to the ICD 10 book open to the guidelines for that chapter. I hilighted and noted in my ICD 10 book as I read the textbook chapter. This was a great way to get familiar with the guidelines as I went along, as well as prepare my book for the certification exam since we can have notations in it. The online lectures also had some clarifications and insights that helped me understand the guidelines clearer and I noted them in my codebook also.

I do the same thing with the AAPC online course. I find it very helpful to make little notations as I go along. I'm actually taking a break from the cardiovascular lectures to watch this video and have my CPT open to the pacemaker section so I can jot notes when I listen to the lecture!

I'm definitely watching this video so that I don't run into complications down the road. I love these tips! Especially the one about not comparing yourself to others. Many years ago I started a dental assisting program and compared myself to the woman sitting next to me. I ended up dropping out of the course thinking I wasn't capable of passing only to find out the woman I had compared myself to had already worked in a dental office for many years. It is so important to be patient with yourself when learning something new. 💜

Hi Victoria, I was watching another informative web entity and was immediately hooked but I have to say, I am extremely impressed by your videos! I am an experienced coder and even I found some of your information that I wasn't too familiar with. I love the way you include the more commonly used bad habits that some coders or soon to be coders do. I'm nit saying anything bad about anyone but truth is,ignorance should not be an excuse. I love your video I just watched, I totally agree with what you said about worksheets and borrowing books, I too had that experience and had to purchase additional courses to get me ready to be able to code in the real world. I have been out of work for just under 1 year and my skill set is definitely suffering, I am glad I stumbled across your website! Thank you! Also, I am much older than most as I decided I dud not want to be a server for the rest of my life, so I went to a local school and took 2 courses, medical administrative assistant and then medical billing and coding then I went to college and got my associates degree in health information technology....it's never too late!

I'm 3 weeks into my CPC coding course with the AAPC and I am really struggling. I have no medical background so not only is it difficult to learn when and what to code, but it's a struggle just to read and understand the provider documentation. Then I struggle knowing what to look under in the alphabetical index. I have done a lot of the "bad ideas" that you mentioned. I do look at the answers and then look them up in the ICD-10-CM codebook just to see how that particular code fits when I can't seem to even know where to begin. None of it is making sense. Do others have as hard a time? BTW, thank you so much for taking the time to make these videos. I really appreciate them and I have received some clarity on things I did not understand from my class.

I come from zero medical background so I know how you feel. I was so lucky to have a great professor for my first coding class. She explained very well how to look for the main and sub terms in the alpha index. Your main term is going to be the condition/diagnostic records going on w/ a patient. For example: patient experiencing abdominal pain. The main term will NEVER be a body part. In this case abdominal is the body part, therefore pain is your MT. Another example in which learning anatomy/physiology and medical terminology really helps: patient has carpal tunnel syndrome. In med term you’ll know that carp/o means wrist bone and -al means pertaining to , therefore carpal tunnel is the body part which is NOT the main term, syndrome will be the MT. I hope this helps.

Some people say not to schedule more than 3 months out without consistently studying. I scheduled my exam 6 weeks out & I felt that gave me enough time to study. 📖 It also all depends on your personal day to day life, if you have kids & a family to care of, the amount of time you'll be able to dedicate to studying. My job allowed me to study while I was at work, which gave me a huge advantage seeing as I work 6 days a week.

I currently work with CPT codes and ICD 10. I'm taking the AAPC CPC coding course and signed up for PratiCode. There is a note on the course from the AAPC that I should wait until after I have taken the exam before starting but I think it would be a great tool to get familiar with coding. Where do you land on this? Is Practicode like a pass/fail kind of thing since completing it can assist in removing the A from my certification? I would like to get as much practice as I can but the AAPC course doesn't allow you to take the PA's but once as well as the exams so I don't get as much practice as I would like. The quizzes can be taken multiple time but I have learned that the questions from the quizzes are the same as the workbook so I'm not practicing my coding as much as I would like. Suggestions? Can I do the Practicode now? Love your content. Thank you for all you do. And sorry for the long message.
