8-4: The History of Super Mario Bros.' Most Optimised Level
Ойындар
8-4 is a level that has been optimised to its breaking point by a handful of speedrunners over the past few years. Here are their stories.
Co-written by iBall1_
With help from Kosmic and Taven Webb
Inspired by Summoning Salt
Side note: Since there aren't any surviving videos of the fastest 8-4s from before 2013 or so, the early videos I show in this are more to show how strategies evolved over time and how runners got more consistent, not to say "this was the definitive fastest time".
Also, GTAce99 had a run that was tied with Taven entering water in December 2019. This completely slipped my mind while making this, but it's still very significant as that was the first ever time anyone had tied Taven into water.
Edit: As of 17/07/2020, top 5 now requires a 44.360 or better, as GTAce99 got one too. Pretty insane given that only three months ago there was only one .360, and top 5 was barely a 44.3xx.

The resources and tools over the years have changed things so much. You might not realize that during that 2013 era ("The Closest 8-4 Will Ever Be to Perfect") no one ever really used/had the means to use savestates, so I had to die and wait for the level to reload on every 8-4 attempt. There's also a clear knowledge gap between then and now. As you said, I was under the impression that fast accel only saved 1 frame. The right release/down+right strat made getting perfect water a million times easier too. Add in the practice rom to tell us exactly how fast each room actually is being played (instead of me recording attempts and frame counting them all, sometimes inaccurately) and it's just so much better today! Crazy how much things can change even in 1 level of a pretty simple game. Great video!

I once played tomb raider with no memory card (couldn’t afford one after console and that one game) for a few months. Had to start over every run which made me very good at first few levels. One day I had a funny idea to turn my tv off and play. To my own amazement I completed the first 2 levels off muscle memory. I claimed I could do this at a party and a friend said he’d give me $50 if I could pull it off. Someone else said dude he’s just gonna enter level skip codes after walking around. So I agreed to do it blindfolded, facing away from the tv, with the volume muted. Used the $ to buy a memory card😎
That was put together really well! Nice video

27/02/2022. Last frame was saved. The closest 8-4 will ever be to perfect (because it is literally perfect). Humans are literally tied with the TAS, literally.

This video was made by the fastest Mario Bros. player ever (literally, at least to today). Dude, congratulations so much.
Masterful video Seriously, very well done. This is really amazing.
At 25:34, Miniland says "If someone were able to get the extra frame in wall-jump room, a frame 66 in turnaround, and the extra two frames in last room with a TAS fast accel, a time of 44.2 seconds would be possible. Who will take the time that low? We'll have to wait and see." No need to wait, Miniland. : - ) LeKukie did this just a couple of days ago.

excellent video and good music choices :)
This is very well made!
This is why we call them moving platforms… Their official name is 'Lift', some guides coll them Elevators. Pully Lifts and Flimsy Lifts also exist… But Lifts & Elevators, as defined by English, largely change elevation… that platform in the lava pit goes left and right… So we've come to call them Moving Platforms instead. The official English name is likely the closest translation NoA and NoE could think of at the time.

WOW GREAT VIDEO!
i would say the most 2 levels in the game that have been worked on the most are 4-2 and most deff this one 8-4...great video
Dude this video is acc rly good
The reason why 8-4 is so optimized compared to the rest of the levels are 2 aside from the one you mentioned. First, that level has much more technical depth than other levels, involving things like walljumps, wrong warps and fast acceleration. Second, it forces you to take deviations from the usual straight line you usually take.
Such a great video

It's worth pointing out that 8-4 is not an exception to the frame rule by any game mechanic; the timing just ends before it comes into play. In a full game playthrough, each level will wait to start until the start of a frame rule, so any gains or losses within a frame rule are wiped away. But timing ends in 8-4 when you touch the axe, so it matters how fast you get there. If you do a playthrough of both quests, there will be another frame rule after 8-4 before starting the second quest. There is even a frame rule for the title screen before starting 1-1. It applies to the start of every level.
