I think they're trying to compete with Sigma Art lenses.
They could have designed it rather into 43/1.8-45/1.8 to match human eye focal length and be a bit different. (Similar to famous Pentax FA43mm F1.9 Limited) :)

They used a lot of lens elements to make optical corrections. Ideally, this will improve image quality across the aperture range. I've watched a few other reviews and the consensus is that it is sharper than the Sony 50mm f/1.8 standard lens.
