    Leaving aside whole songs, these are the individual highlights for me: - 72 Seasons intro and harmonies - Shadows Follow main riff and chorus - Screaming Suicide verses and bridge - You Must Burn! main riff and harmonies - Lux Aeterna main riff and chorus - Crown of Barbed Wire main riff - Chasing Light opening, main riff and chorus - If Darkness Had a Son main riff, verses, chorus, vocals - Too Far Gone? vocals, bridge, lyrics and harmonies - Room of Mirrors harmonies and drumming - Inamorata - everything lol. Perfect Load/Reload style track and easily James's best vocal performance ever in my opinion. This album has so many good guitar harmonies in it. And man, I can't get over how much I love James' vocal melodies in the bridge for Too Far Gone? I think the only song I don't like is Sleepwalk My Life Away, which is a shame because the bass intro really caught me, and then the rest of the song just did nothing for me.

    1:54:36 - The one sticking point I have with that is, combining the upper note or the bass part with the guitar harmony, creates a minor second when the bass hits F, and the guitar hits E.

    One other thing I have noticed is that the intro to Inamorata is really just a slowed down version of the intro of Paranoid by Black Sabbath. :)

    A variation, I suppose, but there are so many differences. I think what you’re hearing is the 4-5 hammer-on, which is something Metallica has used before in songs like Outlaw Torn. I’ve used it too. They play a chord that uses a root note and a 4th, which is kind of a suspended sound, but then they hammer-on to the perfect 5th, making it sound like a more complete/resolved chord. The difference here is that the Paranoid chord is in E minor, and only gets played three times in one measure before the walk-up riff; whereas the Inamorata chord is played on C# minor and gets 4 strums over 2 measures before either switching key signatures or temporarily moving to the Lydian mode with a flat-2. The song is super odd, but interesting! I think Paranoid is an excellent example of the 4-5 hammer-on, and it’s easy to compare metal to metal, but it’s just a guitar player hack. The riffs (and songs) are different enough that I don’t think they’re worth comparing. 😊

    When James says "Ooo" at the 1:17:34 min mark of your breakdown I get a vibe of a totally different band and genre of music (or at least the guitar tones and beat). Hear me out on this, I get vibes of the band Ministry and their song "Thieves". The industrial sound/fast guitar at the beginning and noises the person is making remind me of this part. I may be onto something or on something. :) You tell me.

    What can I say... they definitely pulled the ole switcheroo on us with the singles. I'm sure all of us were a little worried that the album was gonna be underwhelming at first, but it turned out pretty damn awesome! This album has some of the best riffs in their catalogue, and the vocals probably beat any of their previous records by far (Load/Reload was also great, but this is just superior IMO). I mean, tell me the chorus riff and vocals in Crown of Barbed Wire aren't the sexiest and grooviest thing in the history of mankind? However, I do have some problems with the album... Suprisingly, there's a lot of clunky and out-of-place transitions, which you wouldn't expect from Metallica that are famous for their smooth and seamless transitions. So, parts of a song can be almost perfect, but they'll be glued together by some wacky and unpredictable (in a bad way) transitions. I'm sure they could've polished that, I KNOW they could, but they just didn't and it leaves a little sour aftertaste even though most of the songs are otherwise musically and lyrically awesome. Also, some of the endings are either abrupt or, vice vera, too drawn out. There's only a few songs on the album that actually finish in a meaningful and logical way, and the rest are just struggling to land at the end. Even Inamorata, which I loved, could have a MUCH better ending given that it's the last song of the record. With that said, it's hard for me to say if I like 72 Seasons more than Hardwired. The thing is, I can listen to Hardwired top to bottom without skipping anything, but in this album there's definitely a few parts that I'd rather skip to hear the next great part (probably due to the aforementioned transitions). BUT! Despite all the problems, I do believe that this album is a lot more mature compared to Hardwired. It's definitely more emotional and personal for James, which I always appreciate... So I don't know if it's better or not, but I do know that it's great for what it is - it's yet another Metallica album with a lot of bangers that are gonna be stuck in my head, and that's good enough for me. P.S. About the deep cuts during live shows: I wish they'd just do a separate tour after this one where they'd tell everyone in advance like "Hey, this tour we're not playing any of the first 4-5 albums and we'll just do the songs WE like to play from Load all the way to 72 Seasons. If you're down - come see us live." That way the fans would know what to expect and wouldn't be disappointed if they didn't hear Master of Puppets or Creeping Death. Kudos from Яussia for your reactions as always!

The short answer is that I love it. There are lots of highs (and maybe a couple lows), but ultimately one of my favorite things they've done since Death Magnetic.

  • @MidnightNotion

    @MidnightNotion

    Spoiler alert: Nope. Not even my favorite from the record. It’s overhyped, IMO. The chorus is catchy as hell, and there are excellent moments throughout, but the buildup does not pay off. The transition back to the final chorus is so clunky that it almost ruins the song. Too Far Gone?, Room of Mirrors, and Shadows Follow all surpass it in my book.

  • @dreadnought4089

    @dreadnought4089

    @@MidnightNotion I agree. That transition broke the flow of the song, which was otherwise really good, albeit long. Same problem with Chasing Light. The transition before the final chorus felt very clunky. Lux Æterna, Crown Of Barbed Wire, Too Far Gone? and Room Of Mirrors had a much better flow, and did not overstay their welcome, hence why they are my favourites.
