Note - This is just my opinion, but of course I think it's true, because it's my opinion: A lot of people have only been shown jazz right before it got really good. The greatest era of jazz is when it first went underground after leaving the mainstream. In the late 60s and throughout the 70s, jazz musicians began experimenting with all sorts of sounds and there was a crazy cool flourishing of new sounds, rhythms, instrument combos, genre blends, etc. It also became way more international in this era, with African and Japanese jazz scenes taking off. This isn't to say older jazz isn't good, it's just more in a box the same way rock music in the 80s was in a box. Even the greatest rock groups of that era still fit in. Van Halen might have been leagues better than most of their contemporaries, but it's still that general "rock" sound. By being the mainstream of a specific era, it doesn't have a timeless appeal.
