For those wondering what the japanese on the stores say from left to right: らめん - Ramen, more commonly written as らーめん or ラーメン 阮清國 (small brown sign next to ramen shop, probably the store name itself) - "the pure country", 阮 denoting place name, 清 kanji meaning pure / alternative spelling of 明 (bright), 國 archaic spelling of 国 country (fitting for kyoto) 南　南海藝術 スタジオ 日本 - Southern ocean art studio japan, 南 (the one in the circle) south, 南海 southern ocean, 藝術 archaic spelling of 芸術 arts / the arts, スタジオ studio, 日本 Japan 電話 - phone (shortened from 電話番号 phone number). Fun fact, kyoto's area code is actually 075 not 085. The number on the sign would be from either Shimane or Tottori province. I've only passed the N5 so these might not be completely correct.

As someone who doesn't know anything about japanese but knows a bit of chinese - when you referred 國 as an archaic spelling of 国 , does that mean that japanese people mostly use simplified characters in their (everday) lives? Thanks for the explanation btw!!

@@cupofgreentea As for use in daily life, Japan has something called Joyo Kanji ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J%C5%8Dy%C5%8D_kanji ), a list of just over 2,000 characters permitted for offical use such as government documents. Japan didn't simplify nearly as many characters as China did, only 300 or so ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ky%C5%ABjitai and en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shinjitai ). For 國 specifically, it can still be used in names phonetically ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jinmeiy%C5%8D_kanji ).

阮清國 likely the name of the artist - the artwork is from Nam Hai Art (hence 南海藝術), a Vietnamese design company offering illustrations and 2D/3D design services to clients in Japan. 阮清國 is the kanji/chinese character version of the Vietnamese name Nguyen Thanh Quoc, and in fact the Vietnamese language used to have a writing system adapted from the Chinese language known as Chu Han. The Japanese kanji system borrows from both traditional and simplified Chinese, and some common words have a completely different stroke order. E.g. in the word ocean 海, in Chinese (pronounced hai3) it is written with 2 dot strokes in the spaces separated by the middle stroke, while in Japanese (umi/kai) it is written as one single stroke across the middle stroke.

No. Chinese undertook "spelling reform" to simplify their kanji. Japan has evolved slowly but still maintains a kanji basically the same from the time when it was imported from china.
