70mph winds on the summit - what an IDIOT / S4-Ep09 Hiking the Wainwrights

Hiking the Wainwrights - S4-Ep09: Crinkle Crags
The best laid plans 'n' all that! Storm Kathleen scuppered them all. This was supposed to be the first camp of the year but sadly the winds were beyond ridiculous. Both in terms of strength and unpredictability. I'd wanted to tuck behind a crag somewhere to spend the night alone and surrounded by wild nature but sadly is was just a bit too wild 😂
Still, it was a grand - if a little challenging at times - day in the Lake District; precisely what was needed!
As always, thanks so much for watching!

Walked from patterdale through the valley up to Grisedale Tarn last Sat 6th and I was blew off my feet . Managed to get up and carry on just like you, bent over stop ,start with each strong gust . Eventually made the tarn and dropped down to Dunmail Raise . No way I would have ever attempted to camp out in that ! Or go any higher than I did with Helvelyn on one side and Fairfeild St Sunday crag on the other.

I think every hiker has been on these 'So bad they're hilarious' walks. Missing the rain/sleet/hail whipping into your face. But having to wade through a river is always a nice touch

My wife and I first started fell walking many years ago. On our 2nd holiday we were going up to Angle Tarn, at Bordale Hors we met some seasoned walkers who said it was blowing a hoolie up top. Not knowing what a hoolie was we continued. We found out what it was when we reached Angle Tarn. After my wife got picked up and deposited a couple of meters ahead, we decided to shelter behind a stonewall. We could feel the wall move when the gusts really got bad and the wind sounded like the jet fighters you see flying up there. Many years on we regularly revisit Angle Tarn and recount the day. We've since respected the forces of nature.

The trick in weather like that is to hunker down in a bivi bag alongside a large rock. The wind can then do whatever it wants.

I’ve just come back from a weeks hiking in the lakes & followed in your footsteps on a few of my walks….Black Crag from Tarn Hows, Black Star, Fleetwith Pike (then added on Brandreth & Grey Knott. Did not enjoy the descent from GK 😱) Love your videos Glenn, truly inspiring 😊

You mad lad! But good to see you back too. I was out walking during Storm Kathleen and the winds were crazy on mid-level mountains such as Illgill Head, Whin Rigg and Green Crag. I chose those three because they're grassy and purposely avoided the rocky mountains where the wind would have been even crazier.

I enjoyed this video, especially the fact that you showed so much of the path ahead and the different terrain as you climbed up, from the saturated ground at the bottom to the boulders, sharp rocks and scree higher up. It was like walking along with you. It made a nice change from all the shots of people walking towards and away from the camera. Even though you, wisely, didn't camp, it was a great adventure.

I had every weather thrown at me in 15-minute intervals Rain, hailstones, sunshine and a little snow. crazy weather, and what felt like 80-mph winds... I live my life for the Lakeland fells and mountains. So, look forward to your videos they are excellent. This video shows you that you must stay safe when climbing and hiking the fells .
