You should always use a fan and a mask when melting plastic.

You could also get polycaprolactone beads for really cheap next time. Their melting point is 60°C so you could shape them with warm water. Less toxic fumes. You can add coal for pigment so they look black.

Hey Jerry, Hope your well. I've been doing this since the 90's when I ran a small engine shop in Emerald Isle NC. My tool is a big Weller soldering gun [D650, that bad boy buzzes when on]. I use coat hanger pulled into a loop, beat flat on the vise as an electrode. Back then all I had was plastic from string trimmers. now I like sacrificing zip ties & the nylon is stronger. My trick for plastic welding was gas tanks, shrouds & such [lawn mowers], cause those are expensive and ya can't find `em anymore. It's not perfect, it's serviceable. Provided it don't break same place [not likely] I'll call it a win.

I finally went with that style when I got fed up with covers wearing out. These web style coverings last, breath, and are comfortable. Chair covers are also a good idea. The thing I like the most though is a chair with arms that flip up so I can play guitar in comfort. Guitar throne.

What about cutting a couple slots across the break and glue in some plugs?

I have to do that on small engine I do small engine for a very long time it under wampler

Using a fan is a good idea - melted plastic fumes are very unpleasant and probably toxic!

Jerry did you bend the tip or was it bent before you started?

No one ought to criticise the repair. The fact is, you had a broken useless chair. Even though the repair isn't pretty, the chair is now useable. It ain't gonna be a show piece is it? Job well done in my opinion. Plastic car bumper repairs have been going on for years, it isn't a new technique. There are even finishing materials primers and paints available to tidy up the repair and make it look original.
