Thanks for the kind words. Good luck on your DIY rebuild. Before doing this rebuild I have not actually done a complete teardown and rebuild. It was always little Parts here in little Parts there. In all honesty it was not that difficult. I upgraded almost every part I could and I have a little bit over 1300 miles on this transmission. He was complete night and day when I put it in. I think my old transmission was lacking the power to transfer power to the wheels. But again good luck and if you have any questions feel free to ask away. Make sure you check out my video library I have a ton of videos on the 4 l60e.

So my 700r4 I have all tore apart due to 3-4 Clutch failure. So are some saying it might burn out the 2/4 band? Mine is plugged but no damage to the 2-4 Band. I would maybe take it out but have no good way to get that plug out so I'm going to leave it. But want to verify. Some think plugging this could cause 2/4 band failure?

The easiest way is to a 3/8 x16 tap screw it into the end of valve you can hold valve still by inserting a small flathead in the side of it then pull it out

Hey, thanks for always posting helpful vids. I have a question regarding my transmission. Its a 40L60E in my 05 Trailblazer 42.l I6 ext. This winter I noticed a very fast flickering in every source of light in my truck, headlights, dome lights, etc... A few days later I was on my way home and had just exited the expressway, and as I was merging approaching 30 mph all of the sudden it wouldn't shift into 3rd or 4th. I didn't want to keep over revving the motor and burn anything out so I manually shifted into 2nd and carefully drove home like that. It feels to me like there was a short to ground or something that caused a solenoid to burn out. Before I open it up though I wanted to get some feedback. If it turns out to be the 3-4 clutch pack then I probably won't bother replacing it, id rather just get a used transmission from my buddy at the junk yard lol. I hope to get a little insight from you soon. Thanks again for your videos, and for your time.

No, its a horrible video. Is your GM a 96-99? There is a problem with the ECU ground on those computers. You have to move a couple wire pins in the harness and add a wire between two of the harness plugs. You can search it in Precision transmissions page '96-99 2-3 flare shifts' YWIA

I don't think you are supposed to drive the Sonnax servo release check valve very far. You may drive the AC-Delco check valve to far into the case. As long as the Sonnax check valve stays flush with the case, the separator plate will hold it in.

+Reality Lives. The pinless ball is to be driven into the hole and staked on 4 sides with a small cold chisel. The Sonnax check valves main job is to increase the rate at which 2nd releases back into the empty valve body passage after 3rd apply pressure is gone. The valve allows 3rd apply oil to push the 2nd apply piston & band pin back to release the reverse-input drum. Once upshift occurs, the rate of 2nd release is increase thru the under-cut ring, hole, thru the center top, back into the 3rd apply circuit to get the band timing corrected. The larger the 2nd apply piston used, may require the Sonnax 77701-076 center hole to be drilled out to larger size .120” - .125” or 1/8th inch twist drill. Sonnax website by p/n shows instructions. To be installed slightly below flush to avoid spacer plate interference and damage. Retired ASE Master Tech

The Sonnax valve can be installed with or without the seal.Just depends on the bore size. You check it first with no seal,if it's loose then put the seal on.Should go on fairly easy, just below the surface.

I'm after a bit of info on the 4L60E if you could help. If I accelerate wide open throttle in first gear and than quickly back off to say 1/4 throttle around 4500 rpm before it changes to second gear and than accelerate to 3/4 throttle again I get some delay and flaring when it changes to second. If I hold it wide open throttle it changes fine. Is only when I accelerate hard back off a bit and than get back into it is when it does it. Every other aspect of the box seems fine. Maybe it's due for a service as there was a tad bit of clutch dust on the dip stick but the oil does not smell burt or discolored.

Ok update. Done the service and found the left over parts from a B&M shift improvement kit I had done years ago. There was a bit of metal paste and shit in there but I don't really care if it lets go than so be it. Should have added extra magnets also. I pulled the center spring from 1-2 accumulator and put in the 3/8 & 19/32 spacer (Heavy Duty Instructions) and I haven't experienced the the problem as yet. The thin gasket I used but did not work real well and the pan is seeping so I need to pull the pan off again and use a thicker one I have here. Pain in the ass

Seems you know your way around a 4l60e pretty well. I'm currently having an issue with 2nd gear only in mine. Have 1st gear but holds way too long then skips 2nd altogether and goes to 3rd then 4th and lock up. If I manually put in 2nd it's almost like neutral if light on the gas but seems to pull a little if you snap the throttle a little aggressive. Everything thing is perfect except 2nd. I have checked several things in it but would like to hear your input

Maybe check the shift solenoid holes for debris too. Take the shift valves out and clean them. Also check for a build of of debris in the pan wile you have it off.

+justin morris honestly thats the confusing part to me. Id check for debris in the shift valves and the 1-2 accumulator. I asked a co worker that use to operate a trans shop and he recommended looking at the band. He said in the 7 years he owned that shop atleast 5 4l60e trans came in with no 2nd and the end result was a broken or cracked band.

I've checked both you mentioned here as well......i can't tell you exactly how it happened. Truck is a 02 silverado reg cab short bed with cammed 5.3 and all the supporting goodies. Trans has never gave a hint of problem til I was rolling about 5-10mph and I stomped it which the tires started spinning and right about the time it was redlined in 1st I left off the gas ....thats when it happened. 2nd has been gone ever since

+Jesse Benjamin. Yes, The GM factory service manual uses a #4 easy out or screw extractor, found in your tap & die set. To install, use a 3/8” round metal rod to drive the capsule into the case. Mark the rod at 42.0 mm or 1.653” to flush with the case on the valve body side. I am curious what Sonnax part # was used on top of it. If he told us, I didn’t hear it, could have been the annoying music! Ya,,I would guess you could hit mute, turn on closed captioning that usually looks like part Russian and Spanish while standing on your head & hold your left foot turn to the right, but why. Music maybe used for enhancing the experience of viewing. This is distracting. It also appears there is no shielding gas in the MIGs tank or forgot to turn on, judging from the sparks & weld. Yes my MIG was new in 84, and not only can I weld but rebuild the transmission too. ASE Master Tech since 1978/Retired

I this video, he used a 3/8” Lag bolt, welded to fit a slide hammer. With the new check valve in hand, choose the lag bolt that fit the top of the balls captured housing. Also, clean and dry, inside the servo housing, use a propane torch to heat the case bump, valve body side, to aid in removal. Aluminum expands 2:1 compared to iron / steel. This standard propane torch will not get hot enough to damage aluminum (Do not use yellow MAP gas), so helps to remove. CAUTION: Solvent, brake clean and ATF are flammable so make sure it is clean and dry, no spray cans, solvent or ATF nearby. Have someone watch while keeping a fire extinguisher handy. The 3-4 check ball capsule is probably the #1 cause of 3-4 failure. This sonnax valve should solve the problem of the check ball slamming in the capsule. In turn solving the failure of the capsule. Thanks for the view and great comment.
