If the spring(s) look good, and you aren't finding any other issues with the piston or seals; or if you've replaced these parts and the problem persists, drop the valve body and inspect the separator plate. Specifically, look at the 1-2 shift check ball hole in the plate (although you may find some of the others have issues as well). The hole tends to wear into an oblong or elongated (out of round) orifice and allows fluid to pass through instead stopping it. In some cases, the check ball can push all the way through the plate. The symptoms are almost identical to an accumulator seal or spring problem.

My prefered shop has top tier diagnostic skills, but they dont like to repair engines or transmissions and always try to push for full replacement. They want to replace the trans because of my rough 1-2 shift (it was in for unrelated engine issues) but this may just solve that! Thank you!

Opened mine up and instead of two springs I found 3 large nuts (along with a cracked plastic piston. No wonder it shifted worse than a dropped clutch. Bam from one to two. BTW, you should have warned that when you apply air to push out the old piston expect a spray of trans fluid all over the place!

Hi David Moreno, When: while replacing The 1st to 2nd gear Shift accumulator valve located next to the valve body. Apply Is a generous amount of automatic transmission assembly lube directly on the accumulator piston and in the bore. The piston has a Teflon or Rubber ring The Lube is similar to Vaseline & allows smooth assembly. Automatic Transmission assembly lube Is designed to dissolve away. Recommended brands: ATP, ASSEMBLY GOO or SMART BLEND. The LUBE will be GREEN or BLUE in color. In the old days we used Vaseline they are similar in Is texture & viscosity. Kenneth ^

I use those they are awesome especially if your pin bore is wore out, was chasing a lockup issue one time thought it was the tcc regulator valve blocked it still had a hard 1 to 2 shift replaced the 1/2 accumulator with pinless and also the forward accumulator in the valve body BOOM fixed it. In my current 4l60e project I tapped the bore holes with a 10-32 tap and put in set screws with red locktight I think it holds better than those ball bearings (I have trust issues) and its reversable.

If it’s intermittent I doubt it’s a mechanical problem. Try disconnecting and reconnecting the wiring harness to the transmission to clean those contacts. If you decide to check solenoid resistance, do it all the way from the ECM-side harness connection to check the wiring and connection integrity.

William Birnbaum The 2nd ball is for the 700r4 accumulator housing, as this kit is compliant for both. The 1-2 accumulator will not have a affect on your Park to Drive shifting error. There is a Forward accumulator that can possibly be your issue. I would make sure your engine is idling properly, as a high idle will cause a “kick” when selecting a gear.

When your transmission shifts harder than usual, it breaks off tiny bits of clutch material every time. If this happens too much, one of the clutch packs will fully degrade and your transmission will not shift at all! The 4L60E is a fairly fragile transmission, so ignoring a repair wouldn’t be the best idea. Thanks for watching!

Okay got mine fixed here's what I did take a shot in the dark I studied up on the system seeing how everything switches what it takes which is I put a extended servo pin in my transmission never even slipped the first time since then and that's been about 3 months may not work for you but it did for me just the thought extended servo pin

Absolutely absolutely anytime brother you know I'm I went to man I beat my head up against the ball so long trying to figure out that issue and I've never tore up automatic transmission even so much is the pan as far as I ever got as far as ever wanted to get they are extremely intimidating but after months and months of doing nothing but research on that transmission figuring out how it shifts what causes it to ship where does it build pressure I finally ventured into pulling the pan pull the valve body off and checked everything out redone everything everything look good I mean could use a couple things I wish I had to put a shift kit in it while it's down which I have now I'm going to put in but like I said turned out to be that you know extended turbo pin it wasn't engaging the 24 band so it would you have to let off the gas to get it to shift from second to third but I wish you well my friend good luck!

@nickkane8690 my problem was related to aftermarket parts i have. I have a carbureted engine so the bracket i used for the TPI was adjustable and out of adjustment so the TPI was giving bad data.

So I'm here because i ran my transmission with 2quarts low. It shifted great with no issues until i did a wot and it felt like it did a jerk so i checked fluod at that time and noticed it low 2 quarts. Immediately filled it up, now it has a stupid late semi harsh 1-2 shift. Everything else is perfect. Just the 1-2 shift. Is this my problem? It's a remanufactured transmission from GM. Did they still use plastic accumulator piston?

  • @howtofrank502

bishop being a newer transmission it should be relatively durable. If everything else is good, replace this accumulator and your 1-2/3-4 shift solenoids.

So I bought the pinless piston from sonnax and a new 1-2 accumulator from gm on Amazon (yes it has a gm genuine sticker) just incase theres any damge to the housing and when I pushed the plastic piston out there was only the small spring inside. It said it was for my 03 yukon xl denali. Did I get screwed or do some applications only use one spring?

Stephen christopher It is pretty much true, only difference really would be the way it fits against the engine. If you are putting a 4.8 4l60e on a 4.3 engine you may need a adapter plate. Other than that they transmission were virtually the same, slight upgrades over the years.
