70000 Britannia Avoids The Rail Strikes - The Great Western Xmas Envoy

70000 Britannia heads a Saphos steam hauled excursion to Bath & Bristol in the middle of another drivers rail strike which would see the majority of public passenger trains cancelled. As the steam tour is a private train from a private operator, this would not effect the steam special. The effect of strike would mean 'Greens all the way' for the crew of the Britannia and also near deserted railway stations and along a very quiet railway network.
The outbound leg is seen from four locations. We start off in the suburbs of our hometown Birmingham to see Britannia opening up just in the nick of time after having just joined the Birmingham to Coventry mainline (WCML)at Stechford which is about a mile before us. The next shot would see us head to Banbury in Oxfordshire, where a deserted station would greet us. With the ticket barriers down and not a member of staff in sight, it all felt a bit like the original Covid Lockdown. While it felt very eerie at such a big station, it was very enjoyable to have the platforms to ourselves, except for the late arrivals of a few locals which made it just five people. Eventually the Brit came into sight and sweeped through the left handed curve through the station and it was going nicely despite the shut off.
Next up was Kennington just south of Oxford, where the Brit charges towards Didcot and eventually onto the Great Western Mainline. The final scenes take place on the edge of Bath at Twerton and Newton St Loe. The Saphos steam special is seen exiting Twerton tunnel and then gracefully heading off towards Bristol. This is where the action ends as we're unavailable for the return leg.

Was only drivers on strike and there were 2 other tours running steam as well so a bonus for fans with uninterrupted views of them well done with film Great as usual

Lovely collection of shots Liam and Phil, the strikes have been a pain because I was planning to chase it but they've also meant no risk of bowlage and empty stations, so I guess it's not all bad! 😂 Love the shots at Lea Hall and Banbury where she heads into the sun, they're beautiful. Cheers Dan, the second half of 2022 has been a forgettable year on the mainline, hopping for a better 202 for all concerned.
Cracking shots and you must've had a good driver, plenty of sounds from that beautiful chime whistle. So weird to see Banbury abandoned like that. Hopefully The Christmas White Rose isn't cancelled!! Fingers and everything else crossed.

The diesel in this video is idling and is not providing any assistance. Its there to provide power to the coaches and in this video its to help with the turning the movements at Bristol. Sometimes they may assist on certain gradients, or when late running is holding up faster trains and sometimes though rare, being low on water.
Is the diesel on the rear of the train in neutral mode or is it helping to push the train along or is the locomotive pulling carriages and the diesel ?

@@MarshSteamVideosTM I've never understood why some trains need the trailing diesel & others don't. I suppose it must be to do with the systems available on the steam loco and perhaps the time of year. But I would have thought a Britannia would have more ability to power the coaches than say the A4 when we toured the Cotswolds behind Union of South Africa without a minder at the back!

Nothing to do with Health and Safety.. The 47 would have been acting as a generator for the train.
