70 Year Old Builds Innovative Off-Grid Tiny House For Debt Free Retirement

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Imagine living costs so low that you can actually watch your bank account grow just from your government pension. That's just one of the benefits that Peter Matheson discovered when he built and moved into his off-the-grid, super tiny house on wheels in Grand Forks, British Columbia.
Become a Living Big Patron: / livingbig
Peter is no stranger to innovative building, and has experimented with many different techniques including earth building and other eco and alternative projects. When tasked with designing and building an affordable home to help housing issues in Canada he quickly realised that he wouldn't get the design right unless he emerged himself in tiny living. As a result, Peter now finds himself living big in his retirement, albeit in a very small home.

Good thinking when you get older and the leg cramps get worse you don't need to come down a ladder to walk them craps out. lofts are only good for storage or the kids. Horizontal living is better than vertical.

I totally agree with the first part of your comment. I draw the line, however, wishing anyone live to be 140 years old. If I were 140 years old I wouldn't want to be around the vast majority of people who were 40, 50 or 60 years younger than me. What a snooze fest. Anyone younger than 100 wouldn't want to be around a 140 year old fart for more than a few minutes at a time, and really, who could blame them? Don't get me started on the lack of living relatives and who should decide when driving is no longer a good idea. Quick hide the car keys.

I apologize if I am going all out but isn't it deciding that the lifestyle change is the cause of him looking "amazing" a bit presumptuous? he is 70 and has lived in that house for 2 years. I may be going a bit extreme here but it may be because for the first time in video's from this channel I thought the title was a bit insulting towards the person in the video. The guy owned multiple properties he is actively doing things that he thinks benefit the people around him. The title hints that he is living in this house just to ensure a debt free retirement is a bit much. Again I apologize for going all out, I do not intent to be hurtful but assuming things about people or giving too much weight to one particular thing based on assumptions does not feel right to me.

Hiya Bryce, again brilliant. I love when he said, "I own the house, the house does not own me." As we move into a new chapter in the 21st century the mass consumption is starting come into self actualization for even the hardcore spender of "things." This man is doing society a wonderful benefit, by educating better ways to live. It fills me with relief that we can change for the better, for our planet, and community. At times a person wonders if the mass consumption will ever stop; but I see, bit by bit change is coming!! Thank GOD!!

Great to see a tiny house all on one level and user friendly for an older person. I have often watched tiny house living videos and thought "that's all very well when you are young". Also, I love the idea of community because so many tiny house videos feature people living in splendid isolation.

  • @rumigirl

I agree. And what I love about Pete's life is that he has both community AND splendid isolation. Many people seem to have a need for both; at least I do. And I'm bad at giving up things, so it's great to see he hasn't given up anything (of importance, anyway) to live this way. (Lots of people in tiny house videos seem to talk about realizing they can do without material things -- but I don't remember any that talk about this kind of "trade-off" -- which, like the other kind, turns out not to be a "trade-off", after all.) Such a lovely video!

Mostly plastic/fiberglass shells, with 1/4" paneling and particleboard build-out. So, basically, crap construction with no insulation. Hot in summer, cold in winter. The trailer frame may be usable, but is likely underweight for tiny home weights.

  • @NIracomix

RVs are unbelievably cheap construction and you can’t find quality, even used, on the cheap. We had a hard time keeping warm even in a mild Florida winter! Better off buying a trailer & building. Especially if you can hit up a junkyard or salvage yard. You *can* find cheap or even free materials, especially if you know tradespeople.

A big problem with tiny houses, I think, is the theme of "I do stuff elsewhere." So, one person can't sleep, so goes to an all-night coffee house to work; I entertain in coffee houses, libraries, etc. This is all very well if you have a vehicle, no problem driving at night, suitable places to go and meet people, etc. If your tiny house doesn't sustain your life, it's too small, imo. I am very interested in tiny houses for impoverished elderly, but the elderly in my area would be pretty much homebound.

I've found my perfect tiny house! I just need the perfect place to put it. Although, I could easily move along with this baby. I wonder how much it weighs fully loaded? Is Canada more lenient as far as the tiny house movement? I even have the perfect trailer to build this on! No wonder he looks so amazing at 70, he has zero stress in his life which is the way life should be regardless of age if anyone would have asked me I would have told them but nobody asked! LOL! I'm tired of taking care of a house. I'm grateful to have my home but it's not the way I want to spend my life! Everyday when I wake up, I have to decide where to start cleaning. I want low maintenance and just the basic comforts. I might not mind doing the dishes if I only had 2 of everything! I've been getting downsized slowly, only keeping things that mean something to me and most of it is from nature anyway. This is the life for me!
