@@tyrannicpuppy Narbacular Drop was created as a student project at Digipen Institute of Technology for a class (not sure of GAM300\350 or GAM400\450), and part of the paperwork you sign when you attend is that Digipen owns all IP created in those projects is owned wholly by the school.

@@Kingtron5464 basically, they couldn't recreate or push out the exact same game that they had made in that programming class at the school, because when you make a project at that school, the school technically owns all the rights to the game assets and basically the whole game. The makers recreated the basic idea very differently to dodge that.

"the 70 minute unskippable cutscene in Metal Gear Solid 4" that's nothing compared to the 2 hour long cutscene at the end of Death Stranding

This is definitely a video that could have a follow up or two, there are alot of game mechanics that were a result of technical limitations like turn based combat in rpgs.

Prince of Persia in 1989, due to the memory limitations the game had already reached its memory allocation limit for the Apple IIe and couldn't fit anymore into it. So creator Jordan Mechner used a few lines of an XOR formula to turn the hero character to create the Shadow-Man that makes up most of the games suspense and best mechanic... which is just a clone that echoed you.

Also 8-bit music is really limiting. Gave us some great sound design and musical design. Musically this lead to a lot of simple catchy melodies, cleverly creating percussive elements out of double/triple stops, and that distinct square-wave synth vibe. Gave us beloved gems like the music in Mario, Sonic, Zelda and Pokemon.

Not sure if true or not... but I was once told that video games as a whole were accidentally created because of a glitch involving magnets and an oscilloscope thus inspiring the creator of Pong to actually create the first video game ever. Basically, magnets caused the scope to go haywire and the soon to he father of gaming realized he could control, to a small extent, a dot that would appear on the screen... If true, that would be the ultimate in hardware limitations resulting in breakthroughs in video games. Lol

Good thing we got this and MG2 on the HD Edition of MGS3: Snake Eater - Subsistence.

You forgot one of the most famous examples. Final Fantasy Tatics had the spells take certain amount of turns so they could load the animation.

Castlevania deserves a spot on this list. All of the crisscrossing of the map needed to unlock every section of the castle (and the reverse castle) was due to the desire to make a bigger game but memory limitations forcing the developer to get more creative with asset use.

Say Do you know why/how Facebook streaming ended up triggering the filters and even cycle through them? Saw it in one of those end of year Special Because Facebook is only for game logins for me XD

The Mass Effect elevators were great. You got to hear news or unique conversations with squad mates while the game loaded areas of the Citadel. It really helped you get to know your squadmates and their relationships with each other.

I remember reading somewhere that the reason Samus turns into a ball instead of crawling was that they didn't have time to animate a crawl animation for the first game. Perhaps something to include for part 2 if it's correct?

Now we need to see the others with animal parts. Jane may have some spares, well some spare body parts laying around. Might not be "animal" though.

Samus Aran's morph ball was a similar thing too, apparently they were not able to make crawling animations with different directions so they just made her curl into a ball.

My memory has been quite limited lately too. So, from now on I will try and stealth around all day, thanks for the tip.

I love how games always pushing what is possible. As someone who started gaming in 1992 on a sega megadrive to now it blows my mind how far we have come, I can't wait to see how far it goes in my lifetime. Hopefully we will all have our own matrix box 🤣

After the moan about bad graphics, once he played the games he loved them! I have so many games I need to go back to, But being busy I don't have much time! I need to make time!

Wow, that Bunny Filter really suits you Mike. I hope it makes a reappearance down the line. Very cool indeed.

My favorite example of a creator taking a physical limitation and turning it into a strength (Besides the already mentioned fog from silent hill) is from horror manga author Junji Ito, who uses the fact that you have to turn a page as a way to prep you for the scary image you are about to see. This is probably why his manga didn't adapt as well for the anime they made (Also the animation was straight up bad, but that's another thing entirely).
