    09:30 Don't need the knife. If the steel wool will reach between both terminals of the cell,/battery then that's all that is needed. Also, the extended elements can get tangled in the wool and when you try to pull them apart the burning wool (or pieces of it) could fly anywhere. If the 'bundle' of steel wool you have isn't big enough to stretch between the two cell/battery terminals, then just twist a very few strands of the wool into a "wire" that will touch one terminal with the bundle touching the other terminal. Note1: An alkaline 9volt battery (with a plastic insulator cap) will store for years and the terminals are only about 5mm apart so it's a good steel wool igniter. A quality 9V alkaline battery stores enough energy to ignite many bundles of steel wool, even beyond its expiration date. Note2: Personally, I've felt that if I have enough space for enough steel wool to start say...10 separate fires (unfortunately, fires can go out for a number of reasons), then a simple, cheap butane lighter is more useful and flexible (e.g. also provides easily controlled melting of paracord to keep it from fraying, plastic items that melting can help repair, etc). I store it in something that secures/protects the gas lever. (e.g. I store 1 in a prescription pill bottle with some matches and/or dry starter material. Quite a few are water-tight and the cap locks so won't 'pop off' with rough handling. I usually separately store 2 lighters for redundancy in the rare case one develops a leak, even though any leak would be detected during my routine inspections of the 'go' bag(s).)

    Florecent cord on gear (especially on black gear), if you have a uv light like on the arkfield pro it makes things easier to find in the dark. I thing i learned from goblin slayer different knots/braids to put on your gear to differentiate what tool is which in the dark or if you don't have eyes on it

    Hair ties are another great option, like the shock cord, to give a quick access loop. I attach them to the slip ring on swiss army knives to give quick access to a multitool in jean coin pocket / fifth pocket.

    I have started adding small keychain lights on some of my packs as zipper pulls. It helps to make it easy to identify which zipper you are grabbing in a hurry plus a lot of times keychain lights have a true moonlight or at least a sub 5 lumen mode so if you just need a bit of ambient light you have it handy.

    Always take a guided field sharpener out with me while camping when I know I'm using a knife. Probably the best sharpener on the market to "travel" with. Best way to get good at free hand sharpening is use sharpie markers. I like the steel wool idea with a sak that's new to me. Totally forgot about the dead lighter trick.

    As an 80's baby, I've been a smoker since 1996. I quit a few years ago but I still tap my left front pocket whenever I want to start a fire and I've finally given up and put a Bic in my "EDC Pouch". I still have a Spanish clipper from the 90's that works and all but I'll leave that to my grandkids so I can't be shaving off that good french plastic unless it shtf times.

    This could be an all day workshop, but.... anything springy or elastic (for example, rubber tubing, bungee cord, elastic tape in clothing, springs, even rubber bands) are a ready source of stored mechanical energy. They can be used to make hasty traps/trigger devices, weapons (hunting), and useful engines. Simplest is the speargun. Or I can turn my Charge TTi into a 300fps slingshot. Real bows use potential energy from the limbs, but a weaker bow can be improvised using just elastic energy and any more or less straight shaft for arrows (like bamboo). Springs make booby traps very easy to set. And there are dozens of ways to create motion (machines) with elastic, including torsion, deceleration, and friction drives that produce heat as a by-product.

    Doesn't the firesteel corrode when you wear it on your body? Human sweat is quite corrosive and magnesium gets eaten by chemicals very quickly.

  • @ulvesparker

    @ulvesparker

    24 күн бұрын

    I haven't had corrosion (oxidation) problems with my ferro rods yet, but maybe over years it will. But I recently found an old firestarter rod that I had bought in the 80s and completely forgot about. Blast Match?? Anyway it came in its own handle/container. When I opened it up ( after 35 years ), the rod was fine, pristine, but the container was filled with this fine, gray powder, which dumped out and made a mess. It did not look rusty. I figure something happened chemically, but what?
