    a quick note: the terminator is different from the core. the terminator simply refers to the line between the shadow and not shadow area. immediately after the terminator is the core shadow, the darkest part of the shadowed area. some people include the subsurface scattering in this area and use the term terminator interchangeably. it's important to know how it's different from other parts of the shadow because this is where you'll be deciding whether the edge is soft or hard, and also where texture will be most obvious

    The light color actually doesn't affect the shadow color, items under yellow lighting only seem to have blue shadows because the shadow is cooler in comparison to the areas colored by the light

    So my friend sent me this video when I was lamenting about not understanding the basics of colour theory and lighting well enough to do it properly. After watching this I went back and re-did the lighting on a piece I had just done less than a week before... And ooooh my goodness, I truly leveled up. Jessie did such a good job explaining this in a way I could wrap my brain around - Thank you so much!

    Wow! I love the uniqueness to this tutorial! I've seen so many shading guides that mostly just boil down to shapes and light direction but almost none of them ever describe shadow behavior or the logic behind them. Thanks a bunch for this! I know it's still gonna take loads of practice for me to improve but I feel like a good chunk of guess-work in my shading process may finally have been reduced thanks to you ^_^

    Biiiiig question: So I decided to put the info of this video into a drawing of mine and a question popped up regarding the "how color affects shadows" segment. How does the color of the shadow influence the shadow on the the object casting the shadow? Using the yellow light casting a blue light at 1:01 as an example, what if the wire casting the shadow was a rich shade of red? (assuming that the wire is not close enough to the wall to be affected by bounce light), Would the blue shadow color cause the shadow on the wire itself to mix with the red and turn into a shade of magenta? Or would the shadow on the wire not be affected by the opposite shadow color and be a dark shade of red?

  • @AngelCnderDreamer
    @AngelCnderDreamer Жыл бұрын

    Whoa I learned a lot about light and shadows, thank you for sharing this info. o.o I never knew shadow was like that, when you mentioned the artist shading like that for example like the robot.. I felt that... Btw ironically the skin at the end I know this is just how it is, but it ironic cause those are the colors I grabbed for a character that I'm designing, not for shading but for colors. That's a small world right there.

    i like to think of shadow and light as two creatures trying to find each other, light is looking for shadow, and shadow is trying to run away. so whenever there's light nearby, shadow is in the direction away from light (in most cases) its like two ghosts that can take on any form depending on their surroundings. its just a fun way i see it as.

    the forgot to mention: the form and texture the light is reflected on. tho the form is somewhat explained in the proximity. i get why they didn't cuz it adds more a couple more topics like form, anatomy and rendering. but i think it's still relevant.

    Absolutely love the video, been working on my own shading so this is coming in clutch. But there’s something about the bounce light I don’t understand. What I don’t understand is at 8:20 with the bounce light. How does light bounce off of a shirts when cloth isn’t reflective?

  • @CrescentMond

    @CrescentMond

    Жыл бұрын

    So basically, anything that is visible is reflective, because that's what's happening in vision itself: the light that's not absorbed by the material is reflected back to us, if that weren't the case we wouldn't see anything there. What changes between the surface of a chrome object and that of a woollen jumper is how large the reflective surface is and the direction it's facing. Essentially, a chrome sphere or smooth glass plane is a single reflective surface, while a t-shirt has miriads of very small surfaces that, because of the weave of the fibers, don't all face in the same direction. It's what happens with cloudy skies also, the clouds give a softer light that has way less harsh shadows than a clear sky because the tiny water particles function as very small lenses that distort the reflection of the light, creating light refraction.
