About me: I'm a natural hair stylist during the day and CEO of a natural hair care company called Froetry (www.froetry.com). I have worn my 4c hair short for years as I love how it brings out my facial features. In September of 2020, I started a set of locs that eventually I had to comb out because of an allergic reaction. However, I am now growing my hair out in order to start them again. and I'm excited to show you all the journey and how I navigate what some people consider the "awkward/ugly stages". It does not have to be awkward or ugly!
What questions do you have about locs and the process of starting them?! As a loctician and natural hair stylist, I’d love to share more insight and tips that I give my clients. Drop your questions below!

“Tired of wondering what’s the next hairstyle” wow you took the words right out of my head because that’s exactly how I feel right now 😅
I am a natural hair cosmetologist who has been working with locs for 10 months now. I love the fact that you educate your clients. I am that way as well. I have had to repair so many locs because of the lack of education people did not receive from their loctician. It's pretty sad. I am so glad to see a video with explanations. Many blessings and much success to you!!!!

Education is actually more important to me than styling locs! It is really my passion, so thank you for seeing that and supporting! 💕
The lifestyle question is soooooooooo important!!!! I thought about it for years when I was at a company that wouldn't have been favorable to the early growth and changes that locs go through.....to the point where I got a new job in the hair care/beauty industry so I could go through my journey unbothered. Now, I'm a few weeks in, with all it's fizzy glory, alllllll up in the Zoom calls and it is the best decision I EVER made!!

🙌🏾 good to hear!
My loc's are now 17 months old (the teenage stage). I'm having fun with them 😊 I have been going to a location every two months but this time I'm waiting 3 months. I have not really tried to retwist my own hair. I have a nice amount of new growth. I have ordered the interloc tools. I used the whole line of products from Loc God by Nia in New York (also I used Jojoba, coconut, and vitamin E oils). I'm proud of my loc's now. I am 68 and they mingle grey. Just Royal. I like the way you explain how to care for them myself. I need your help to keep me going on my 2 year commitment. I know I will go longer with your help. 👑🌹👑

I have been contemplating locking my hair for over quite some time now, this video is so helpful. I am so glad I found your channel, I have not asked myself a lot of these questions, but they will definitely help me make the best decision. But I have a lot to consider.
Would love to see a video on various loc sizing. Great info

I've been thinking of starting locs for awhile now. Your video definitely helped me make up my mind. This was very helpful, thanks for sharing.
Love this video. I’m a Licensed Master cosmetologist who offers retwists and starter locs services. I just started my loc journey yesterday. I was weary about how I would look with locs, tried coils 20 years ago but I have 2b in the front so it didn’t work out back then. I grew tired of wearing weaves & braids & wanted to give it another shot. This time I chose the two strand method. Your video was very informative as it reassured me that this is the way to go.
Love your channel! You are exactly the locktiction my daughter is looking for! Will be reaching out soon to make an appointment/consultation. 💜👏🏿
so happy i found you! i’ve decided after doing a big chop on my hair a few years ago that now’s the time to try something new & get locs since i’m growing my hair out. your videos have been really helpful so far, and i would love a vid on sizing. i wish you lived in my area so i could go to you to get started, but oh well 😭
I've watched 3 of your videos back to back and I find yiur page very informative. You've answered some of my questions plus given me more to consider. I'll be tuning in regularly as I embark on my journey 🥰
I am ready to come to you right neooow . Based off of your videos you have all of the qualities in a loctician that I am looking for to start my journey😩🤌🏾😮💨🥰 I appreciate you educating your audience 👏🏾
I'm in love with the videos you have posted and I am glad to have come across them. I just started my loc journey about a month ago but I already have some dandruff build up and quite frankly have always struggled with it on my 4C hair and have tried so many different approaches but I'm still kinda stuck and need help on keeping my scalp looking clean throughout this journey. Ugggh please help, TIA!
i had dreads for a little bit but took them out. i’m just educating myself further before i loc it up this weekend. i trust no one with my hair, ill be doing it myself
I love how you communicate with your clients
I am glad I found you looking to start my loc journey. Searching for a loctician in my city as we speak.

Thank you for this video! I’m thinking of getting locs and this was helpful.
Amen!!!! Thank you so much for this video… I wish I would’ve found you before I started mine but you still gave me everything I needed! I’ve been loc’d for 7 months, started with relaxed ends that I would curl. I workout alotttttt and didn’t realize it was the sweat unraveling them! I cut most of the relaxer off today and started interlocking them! This little tool is not for the faint… my fingers are on fire 😔
Yes! Thank you for your advice. I'm 30 days in and I am loving this journey! Don't give up 💫🤞🏽🔒💜

My hair is currently relaxed so I'll have to the big chop. I really wanna start my loc journey because I was never taught how to take care of my hair in its natural state and I really wanna go back natural so I think this is the best decision for me.

Same here. I did my second big chop in February. I really want to learn to take care of my loose natural hair before committing to locs. I want to be on my own loctician because of COVID and I am scared of those "wanna be locticians". I love Courtney's videos, I have learned a lot. I wish I lived in the US so she could start them. 🙂

@@CourtneyGrayton Please is the video up yet, on the types and sizes?
Thank you for the time stamps!
Thank you for this, I've recently decided I want to begin my own loc journey. I'm kinda sure on the parts I like but I'm open to all information, kindly speak more on the methods of starting locs esp 'instant locs'. I'm trying to avoid any gel or wax or anything that causes buildup but still have a nice stable foundation for my locs.
I'm debating on starting locs so this was very helpful.
I started my son's with interlocking and I absolutely love it! He's 4 years in and so cute and easy to maintain. I'm thinking about restarting my journey, when I started it I had the coils because my hair is really soft and curly and I really didn't like it. I'm thinking two strand twist with interlocking to restart.
Thank you for your knowledge. I'm still in the decision phase but about 80% in favor of getting locks. Hoping to find a decent loction.
Thanks For Helping me with this. I'm thinking about this new journey. My hair came out a when I became ill 5yrs ago and now I'm trying to see how I can start it to grow back with using my own hair. But this video helped me to figure out some ways ☺️ to start if I wanted to try.
My beloved thank you for another excellent video so much information. 🥰

Thank you for your videos. I have binged three already and feel much more educated. I had locs during the comb coil and beeswax generation. The only other alternative was Sisterlocks which I couldn’t afford. Now with so many options my biggest problem is finding a stylist to start the process. (One stylist wanted me to cash app $30 just to schedule a consultation.) I love your questions we should ask ourselves because I have grappled with these questions myself.

Hi Courtney, Thank you for your education and the way you professionally carry yourself. Have you thought of writing an ebook or similar? Secondly, I was in the DMV, then LA, now “awakened” in Rwanda 🇷🇼, I cannot come see you for hair care/products, sadly, many Amazon products don’t ship to Rwanda but maybe if you FedEx?
Thanks a lot for this, I have opted to start and do my locs myself so this information has been very helpful🙏🏽🙏🏽. SUBSCRIBED!
i had locs for all of middle school and combed them out the summer before freshman year. at the time they were way to big for my density, so i'm ready to do it right them time and look fine as hell.

Hi Courtney Grayton..what advice you can give for someone that have started their loc journey and they had a little perm left on the ends to help maintain it daily such as what oils and how long will it take for the perm hair to look like the natural hair...any advice would help thanks!
What’s the best thing to use when starting Locs, example bees wax , gel etc ?
My hair is broken in the front.. thinned out .. I colour my hair myself and then I do the twist…I am open to learning…to visit twice per year..
So true. I have been my own Loctician. Is hard to find a Loctician who is honest
Thank you Courtney, what do you recommend type of lock for people who have receding hair?
Thank you so much for these videos! I’m hoping to start my locs very soon and on my own. For the two strand twists, do they need to be twisted a certain way? Like clockwise etc?

Standard is to the right!
Great video thank you. I am thinking about getting locks because i think it will be more practical and will give better hair days. I have curly hair but my hair is thin though healthy. I talked with a loctitioner and she recommended hair extentions, which i do not want at all. I do not want a glamour look, just a easily styled natural hair that can be maintained by home products. Do you think extentions are necessary or is it because of the hype, she was recommending it? Also I am 48, and need to color the roots in every 3 weeks,, which i started doing myself at home during covid. Now I learnt that using conditioners can detangle the locks, so what should i do after the dyeing the hair?
I'd love to hear about the different sizes to start with. My boyfriend want locs and I plan on doing them for him. So any tips would help for a beginner loctcian. (By the way I have 0 knowledge in locs just learning for him possibly a hobby. I want to be good at it though not just doing it to do it.)
Loved you advice. Wish you were closer.

Thank u a lot! Wish I can find someone like u in Chicago, I've been searching, and so far one person I felt the vibe was extremely uncaring, which was a definite no, another one may have been too busy and did not respond back as soon as I would have thought, it took a couple of days for him which means he might be too busy, and then another person's info said they make house calls but her pics were of uneven parts that u could clearly see were different sizes, so I will continue to search, but have decided to start them at home, my daughter can start them as two strand or braids😁

Hi! Thanks for your video! Do you have any loctician recommendation in Mass, or the Boston area?
Please do a video on sizing. I am considering this journey. I started locs in 2019, but took them out early 2020 because I was not happy with my look. My hair is fine with a loose curl pattern and has some balding spots. Can my hair type wear locs?

Hi im Tami, im considering locs. I hv more interest in 2 strand twist with a bit of a curl on the ends. Is this possible? I do swear a bit...menopause and a lil exercise routine 3 says a week. Do you think this is a good start method?

looking for some insight please! I've got 3c texture and I want to loc my hair with the intention of brushing them out in a few years. I love the idea of locs, but I also know I will want my big curly hair back. Do you have any recommendations for locticians in the Detroit area?
I'm Finna start my locs wht the best gel to put on your locs?
OK, when it comes on to locs um do u have to reloc every strand of hair, whenever it needs relocin?
I am thinking about locking my 5-year-old granddaughters hair should I start with two strand twist or I guess you call them coils?
Are you able to do Freeform dreads with 3b type hair
i have a part in the back of my hair that has been pulled out and the length is abt 2-3 inches maybe but the majority of my hair is 6 inches maybe, can i still start my locs all over and if so, what way should i start them with 4c hair and my condition

I had sisterlocs for about 6 years but maintenance fell off and decided to cut my hair. Now I would like to do something with my hair either interlocking or locs but someone said they didn't advise because my hair is thin. Just need some clarity on this please.
I want to loc my 11yr old hair. She has 4c hair and don't like getting he hair done. Also her stretched is past her middle of her back. What do you recommend?
