I am actually curious about this situation I was in (long read): My friends and I are planning a trip in June and we were looking for a 6th. I asked my friend (J). I told J about the trip, and he was ecstatic to join in. So we were both excited and planned activities and lodging together. J is very well-off. He doesn't work but his husband does. To give you an idea: he told me about a private tour he went on in South Africa for $15,000. He didn't like that my friends and I were looking at cheaper options, not dining out as often, and that we were crossing off some excursions like horseback riding or ATV riding. Later on, I got the idea to change my return flight to another country, one that I had been meaning to go to for a long time, since it was very close by, tickets were cheap, and I probably won't have this much time in the future. I asked J (since he was on my return flight and he has the time/money) if he would like to join. J says no, and I say ok. A few days later, I changed my return flight to go to my other destination. I messaged him to give him a heads up. J did not take it well. I apologized and said I understood that this sudden change was a bit of a road bump, and hope that he doesn't mind it too much. He said that yes, he does in fact mind, and that now he "questions the rest of the trip". I apologize again and within minutes, he decides he "might as well cancel the whole thing," and that what I did "caused a considerable impact on this relationship." I was shocked. I apologized and said that I hope he can reconsider. He called me selfish, that the whole trip was all about me, he didn't like our accomodations, our dining options, activities, the state of communication of the rest of the group, that I abandoned him, etc. After hours of this I told him "I feel this is a bit of an overreaction." Admittedly, it was the wrong thing for me to say, but I wasn't going to continue apologizing, allow him to continue blaming me while maintaining he's a helpless victim, and refuse to act like an adult. This change would have meant that J would be spending around 3 hours max alone, in a First world, English-speaking country, before taking the bus to the airport. For someone as well-traveled as J was, I assumed he'd be able to handle it. He blew up at me saying that he was overreacting. This continued through texts until the end of the day at which point I stopped responding, and the next morning I got a two paragraph email restating the points in which I am wrong and I am bad, with 0 provocation from me. Then the remainder of the day, and the next receiving more texts, each one again detailing each point in which I am being selfish. Again no contact from me. One thing that I felt was particularly unhinged was that he told me how much he prepared for this trip by swimming 6 days out of the past week (presumably for shirtless pool pics). I read that with my jaw dropped, thinking you can not POSSIBLY be blaming me for making you swim? Regardless, I am genuinely curious now, because although he didn't react well to my change in return flight, in the end it was still my action that caused it, so I definitely feel responsible, and I feel a bit guilty for saying he overreacted because now I feel like that could be constituted as gaslighting. On the other hand I also feel that he should be able to handle himself (he is in his 40s). I guess I wanted to see what I could have done better?

I did those things too, now I regret it, I'm traumatized. I did those things most time subconsciously, if not, I had "good" reasons for it. In therapy, I learned to unlearn those mechanisms. I have narcissistic and bpd traits combined. Am I evil? What is evil? Every single human being has bright and dark traits, it matters, how aware you are of them and how strong are those traits. My dark traits are very strong, but I also learned to develop my bright traits. I learned to feel again, to let the emptiness behind me and how to feel with other people. If I'd hurt a good person in these days, I would feel shame and regret. Back then I was mostly unable to feel those things, I just had to survive!

As much as I feel like your content is very benificial for many people (it certainly has been for me) and shed light on mental illness and trauma I have to say it feels very regressive in terms of spreading awareness to label people as evil, regardless of how heinous their acts may be. To me, noone chooses an antisocial diagnosis any more than someone chooses to be an empath. We choose how we act of course, but this comes down to if we have regulated caregivers around us when we learn how to interact with the world. Saying anyone is evil because of lack of that feels like anecdotal subjectivity, and when talking about mental illness, everyone has their pain and their trauma. 🤷‍♂ That being said, you're content has taught me a lot of things and has helped me find places to start looking for help and learning!

Deal with someone like that and get back to me. There are evil people in the world, and it doesn't matter if they're labeled evil. They don't care. They will do evil, even when made aware of how they behave. Because they're evil. Many, many, people have pain and trauma and don't behave evilly. Because they're not evil. Having a diagnosis of any kind and working on those problems is something an evil person will never do. Some people have trauma and deal with it, others have trauma and go to their dark side. They get no sympathy from me, as they are the most destructive people I've seen in my 60 years on the planet.

The feedback I was giving was to psych2go and the percieved equals-sign between antisocial diagnosis and the label evil. If you read my comment again I clearly say that the deciding factor is how we choose to act regardless of our trauma or diagnosis. However, there are people who are looking to get help with diagnosed, and more importantly undiagnosed, sociopathy and narcissism, and if the aim of the channel is to promote mental health and for people to seek help, the label evil is in my opinion more alienating than contributing to that goal.

Even people who have these diagnosis might look for places to get help, and alienation in any form in my experience rarely contribute to healing or sustainable change.

Listen, (and this is very important): The term "hurt people hurt people" has been debunked as a myth. There are people who experienced the same traumas, who Didn't turn evil but turned soft and kind instead. What would you say is the difference between them? That would be a more interesting question than "what caused this person to be evil?" You say that trauma can turn someone evil, but we would instead need to study their Adult decision making. The trauma they experienced is the same, but the differences between them are their individual choices on how to proceed, as an adult with the power to make their own decisions. Evil people do exist, and they are not merely victims of trauma and therefore excused. We are allowed to call them evil, because that is what they are Deciding to be, and they are thus being perceived that way. Do not excuse their behavior. Remember they have full control over who they choose to be evil towards: for example, their vulnerable loved ones vs. their boss where they suddenly are able to refrain.

That's a very good insight. Any bad behavior we don't hold accountable in our parents, we risk doing ourselves someday. When we continue to make excuses for our parents it becomes impossible not to turn out like them - as much as we don't want to.

My father is an evil man, and I've spent my entire adult life trying to recover from the abuse he inflicted. The physical violence was relatively easy to deal with in comparison to the mental abuse and torment, and it didn't stop when i left home. He sabotaged every relationship in our family, and despite that, my mom, sister, and I have an incredibly tight relationship because we all understand how much torment the other has endured, but there have been times we were all pinned against each other by my father, and the family was in complete disarray. Things have significantly improved ever since i layed him out with my fist. He keeps to him self these days, and just as well, my sister and i limit our interactions with him. My mom, on the other hand, still deals with his bs, but he's been dying of heart disease for almost 20 years, and it's unlikely he'll be around for much longer. It's sad that we all kind of pray for the day to come.

It was foolish of her because I told my dad about it. A couple years later, he went there to report her to the police and confronted her. when he came back, he told me that she still blamed me for everything. that girl seemed to never change but at least my dad won the situation and the mean girl’s privileges were limited and she ended up not having all the freedom. Oh my Lord, it is so bizarre and hysterical how some people manifest cunning, sadistic psychopathic traits and go any lengths to ruin a person’s life and piss them off with obvious lies.

This video is incredibly helpful and, from a personal standpoint, accurate. For the past two months I’ve had to deal with folks who, in one way or another, did some of these actions. One however, did them all. Including the “Getting back at you.” I honestly encourage anyone reading this, if you ever wind up in a situation like this? Run. Run away. Leave those kind of people behind. Yes, they will come after you, yes, they will literally manipulate your friends to turn against you. Drip poison into the ears of anyone who will listen. But the ones who TRULY, love you, the ones who will not stand for it, they’ll be there. Were it for not one in particular for me, I would’ve went back into social isolation. Remember, that life and Karma, have a real fun way of reminding these kinds of people what happens when you get away with murder, so to speak. So stay strong, keep going, and hold your head up high. You being the bigger person is a direct threat to these kinds of people. And that’s the greatest feeling of all, showing them you won’t take their crap.

I really take exception to the title of this video. And then I watched it and you leaned into it. Using the term evil on a channel that proposes to be about discussing and helping people understand psychology is ridiculous. The reason psychology works or studying human behavior from anthropology to whatever science is because we understand why people do what they do as best as we can. Saying something is evil is blaming some unknowable Force as if we're all victims of it. There are reasons why people do things both healthy and unhealthy things, it should never be dumb down to just "evil ".
