7 Signs You're Depressed and Don't Know It

May was mental health awareness month. Even though we are late to posting this, we hope this video about depression can still help raise awareness. Sometimes, the signs of depression are not so obvious. For example, unstable mood, not being able to fall asleep, or losing appetite. Want to know how to know the signs of depression? We recommend seeing a professional if you see yourself relating to many of these signs.
As a mental wellness channel, we hope that the channel has somewhat inspired you to seek your own therapy, and gained a better understanding into your conditions.
We also have a playlist on various depression topics here as well: • Depression
This video is not meant to diagnose any individual nor is it a substitute for professional therapy. If you or a loved one have shown any of these signs and are concerned, please reach out to a mental health professional to explore in-depth. #depression

in case you don't have time to watch: 1. you emotions change depending on your surroundings (e.g. happy around friends, sad when you're alone) 2. you notice changes in your habits (sleeping, eating, showering, being on time) 3. you blame yourself for things, regardless of whether it's your fault or not 4. you've stopped doing things you used to, or stopped enjoying it (you might carry on doing them and act happy so as not to ruin the mood around friends) 5. you've become indecisive, with major and minor issues (points towards being unsure of one's capability) 6. you're on edge/ irritable all the time and may overreact in situations that can be talked about easily 7. unexplained physical pain (aches and pains) if you relate to one or more of these symptoms, it might help to talk to a mental health professional have a good day!

As a man who used to struggle with depression these are the most helpful things I can think of: -Take Risks, don't let the fear of failure stop you from trying something new or something great -Do things that genuinely scare you or that you're afraid of (Even little things like climbing onto a roof and helping to put up Christmas lights if you're afraid of heights or saying something to the cute cashier girl other than "hi" and "thanks") -Pursue an ambitious goal, one that a lot of people don't believe you can achieve (It doesn't even matter if you fail this because no matter what the pursuit of an ambitious goal will make you a better person and give you fulfillment) With that being said, do your best to succeed -Have a passion, basically this means to find a hobby that you enjoy so much that you will spend hours and hours getting better at it -Study history, pick a role model, and then analyze the traits of your role model and list the reasons why you admire them. Then start to emulate these traits in your everyday life and eventually you will become your own role model. -Don't ever quit something just because it's hard (You can quit a crappy job if it's not the right fit for you, but never quit solely based on the fact that something is difficult). Embrace challenges and look for opportunities to improve yourself mentally, physically, and spiritually. -Never put yourself down. Try not to think negative things about yourself and especially never say them out loud. You will think more highly of yourself when you say positive things about yourself, at the very least avoid putting yourself down on purpose. -Live purposefully. Have a direction for your life and if you don't already have one, make one. Decide what's most important to you and live accordingly. If you have a family or even a single loved one, your first priority (other than serving God if you're religious) should be to provide for them, to protect them, and to help them become the best version of themselves -Develop Integrity. I can't even explain how much this increases your self-repsect. Be honest, be trustworthy, don't cheat (unless you're in a street fight) and live with honor. -Find a hobby that you're really passionate about and strive to become a master at it -Finally, probably the most important thing I can say is to think less about yourself. Think less about yourself but not less of yourself. In other words, think about other people before you think about yourself, especially your family and loved ones. If you're focused on helping them with their problems I can promise you that your problems will become less important and less troublesome. Look for opportunities to help others and make them feel better about themselves. Nothing lifts you out of depression better than helping someone out of theirs. I hope this helps. I realize that some people are genetically predisposed to having a harder time with depression, but I believe that there's nothing you can't overcome with a strong mindset. In addition, I strongly believe that going through depression and having such terrible lows actually gives you the capacity to feel even greater happiness and joy. The reason I say this is because when you feel genuine joy after being depressed for so long you can't help but feel grateful. The beauty of life is that we are meant to experience the full range of human emotions, from happiness to anger to jealousy to despair to joy. We couldn't feel genuine happiness if we never knew what it was like to be sad. If I could talk to whoever is reading this face-to-face, what I would say to you would be simple: don't quit. A quote from Winston Churchill kept me going in times when I thought I had nothing left, he said: "If you're going through Hell, keep going." Everything in life can be and is meant to be an opportunity to make yourself better, and depression is no exception. Keep fighting, all of you are descended from warriors no matter what culture or country you are from. You wouldn't be here today if it weren't for the conquering spirit of your ancestors. Live a life that would make them proud. While most of us will not fight in physical wars, no one is exempt from the battlefield of life. Depression can be a battle every single day, every single second in some cases. Keep fighting, it will only get better. And the more you fight, the more you will gain respect for yourself. I've conquered my depression. Every now and then it will start to try and creep back into my mind but I don't let it. I destroy those feelings with action. I go lift weights, I go running, I listen to metal music, whatever it takes for me to regain my confidence. You can conquer depression, no matter how severe it is. That doesn't mean you'll never have days where you feel down, but it does mean that you'll have the strength to push through and do what you need to do as a man regardless of how you're feeling. Stay strong, stay hard, and fight like dragons 🐉 You're going to be very glad you did.

I have been in depression since 8th standard, I remember it was in 10th grade when I found out through an online counseling session that I have depression, I am in 11th grade as of now and I do not have a single medication because my family does not prioritise mental health, they only worry for the scars visible to the eye. Let me tell you that I go through literal hell, I can't describe what I go through everyday, It is so freaking bad that there's not a single day when I don't self harm, i feel like that's the only way of calming down, I know it's not right but I can't seem to stop. I hope anyone who's going through my situation stays strong. We will get through this too ✨.

Its the princip of ying and yang. And I believe that you will have your good times also it right now may not look like it. That your family is not supporting you is disgrace and should never happen. People who don’t have anxiety depression or any other mental health issue don’t know how difficult it is . The mind is so powerful that it takes full control and a strong hold over you and you’re just swimming and struggling trying to not drown , leave far reach the shore .

The more I open myself to the truth the more I realize how many of these videos speak to me. Everyday I tell myself I’m fine and/or “hey I think I’m getting better” then out of nowhere it’s sudden waves and anger, sadness, or just nothing at all, and I try my hardest to just hide it but it comes out in the way I speak and do things all the time. I’m barely eating anything and I know its not a good thing but I can’t find myself making anything. I’m having more persistent thoughts about things I know I should not be having, and to top it all off my third therapy session involved discussion about anti-depressants.

Hi there, I'm Tiana! I am a 16-year-old girl who loves health and medical studies, I just want to inform you that telling yourself or making yourself not eat is a way of hurting your body not only on the outside but most definitely on the inside. Starving yourself leads to health problems and bad things that may cause you things you have never experienced before. If you feel as if something is wrong with your body. I disagree, everybody is different and is made who they are meant to be at the start. If you really do feel the need to change yourself starving yourself is not the way to do it!! Make sure you are getting all the nutrients you need and the electrolytes you need because all of the things you get from food makes you function. Food is fuel!! Now lets talk about how you try to motivate yourself. That is a great choice and is also one step further toward showing your mind you are perfect and that you dont need to worry. Having a nice and healthy mindset also leads to a healthy body. If you keep motivating yourself that will get you onto the path to success. Its all about talking about to yourself. Hope this helps!!!

Many anti-depression medications actually cause more depression in some people. You can only hide things for so long and then, they come out. If nothing else on the eating, grab a piece of fruit and a peanut butter sandwich. I made myself cheese crisps tonight (just a small amount of butter spread on the tortilla, top it with shredded cheese and stick it under the broil setting on your oven and watch it like a hawk. When the cheese bubbles, it's done). I couldn't think of what I wanted for dinner. Thoughts about things you shouldn't think about? Suicide or Homicide? Hopefully neither, but we here won't judge you. I certainly won't as I think about suicide all the time. Talk to us here, the ones who are non-judgemental.

Hey, you're not alone. It might be hard to believe this, but how you're feeling will change. You are an amazing person, and don't let your feelings or circumstances define who you are. Remember that life is a rollercoaster, and if you're on a low part, you will climb back in again. You're important to so many people, and so many people love you for who you are. I encourage you to talk to someone about how you're feeling. I know a lot of people instantly think "No that's weird, I'm not just going to dump my problems onto someone else." But that's not what's happening. You can just be like, "Hey, I've been feeling kind of down lately" And you can tell them if you just need to vent, or if you want advice. Here are some more tips: 1. When you're alone and you feel like crying, don't stop yourself. Let those tears roll but don't beat yourself up. Don't insult yourself or say anything negative, just try to empty your mind. 2. Tell yourself you are loved and you are beautiful, because you are! 3. Spend less time on Social media, and more time on books, nature, and movies. 4. You don't have to force yourself to smile, you if you feel comfortable you can ask your friends for a hug and that will make you feel a little better. 5. Try a new hobby! This can be theatre, a sport, dance, cooking, running, or anything! 6. When you are just feeling SUPER bad in your worst moments, remember how many people love you. Take a notebook and write down everything you love about yourself on one page, and everything you hate about yourself on the next page. Take the hate page and rip it up and throw it in the trash saying, "These lies don't define me." And tape the "Things I love about me" on the mirror and read them every day! Might sound a bit ridiculous, but it will lift your mood. I care about you, and I hope you find peace. Remember, chances are you know tons of other people with depression and just treat them exactly how you would want them to treat and talk to you. Praying for you!! God loves you. 🙏

Sincere question, no pressure to answer but I want to toss it out there since it helps me ... What's the fear itself? In a concrete way, not just vague? What specifically is the fear of? Listen closely to the fear and give it extra attention for a day, or a few days, and ask it what it's telling you. You'll often find that fears are just our emotional minds reminding us to remember facts or experiences that we already know we've learned from, and/or just anxiety for its own sake, and in either case, I find it helps to treat it like my wuffly younger dog ... I thank the fear for alerting me to its worries, tell it it did a good job, and reassure it that I've got things under control. That works much better than trying to tell a fear (or a dog) not to do what it thinks its job is. I don't experience chronic depression, but getting diagnoses for my specific issues has really helped me and made me feel empowered. And it doesn't mean you have to take meds, or otherwise change anything at all. It's just getting approval to use a term that helps you capture the essence of what you go through. To me, at least, knowing feels MUCH better than not knowing. Best of luck, keep hanging in there 💚

@@ItsAsparageese maybe not actual fear even though I know my family will get worried or think I’m going crazy when I’ve been feeling like this for so long. Like at this point it would just be putting a name on something that’s been going on for years lol and I don’t want everyone to know about it. Also yeah meds scare me but I don’t have to take them as you said. So really I feel like it doesn’t matter whether there’s an « official » diagnosis or not. No one takes depression seriously anyway. Also I feel like it’s getting better sometimes and then finally no. Anyway that probably doesn’t make any sense. Sometimes I’m sure I have depression, because I’m thinking about how the way I feel must not be « normal » like it can’t just be that I’m lazy and everybody else feels like that they just « suck it up ». But sometimes I feel like I’m the one making myself like this and there’s actually nothing wrong.

I once told my family that I think I might have depression, so they can help me consult to a doctor but they just shrug me off and say I was just 'imagining' it. And when my depression worsen, it came to a point where I wanted to leave.... that's when my family finally believes me, when they found my body flooding with so much blood. It's even a miracle that I'm alive. Now I'm thriving to become a physiologist and help young adults like me, face their challenges. And also a quick reminder to all parents out there.... Constantly ask your child if they are facing something hard. Because being a child isn't an excuse to not have mental issues. School pressure can cause a lot of mental illness, commonly stress. So please don't go too hard on your children. Because I experience it first hand, and it's hell.... And I don't want anybody to feel the way I did that time.... That's all... Let's stay safe everyone!! 💜✨

I fear that telling this to my parents would lead to them scolding me or not taking me seriously. My mom is really fixated on school grades and I can’t concentrate even for 1 second because I start talking in my head and I just can’t stop doing it. That’s because I don’t have any friends and I feel lonely all the time because my dad works and my mom doesn’t share any of my interests. Now I want to convince them to adopt a dog so that I won’t feel lonely anymore, but they will probably say that we can’t at the moment, which is not true ( Trust me, we don’t have money problems. We are not rich, but we are not poor either).

Either way it always takes whatever I was feeling with it and I'm left there feeling nothing. Just empty laying in my bed.

My mom passed away 5 months ago from a drunk driver when she was coming home from visiting my dieing brother. 6 days later my brother passed. They were the closest people to me in my life, besides my son and fiance. I haven't been myself..I don't care about daily habits I used to RELIGIOUSLY do. I've always been a huge skincare junkie. Now I wash my face maybe once a week if I feel up to it. I don't really eat, I have horrible sleep. I have ups and downs when I'm happy and then I get punched in the face with sadness. The most horrific sadness I have ever felt in my life. It's happens anywhere. Grocery shopping, playing soccer with my son, or even being intimate with my fiance. It just happens..I don't act on my emotions during these times, I hold them in. I don't want others to see me hurting. I have thoughts of terrible things, not everyday though and I would never act on them as I have people who need me and I know my mom and brother would be furious with me. I've stopped talking to people, but in the same breathe I talk to everyone. It's weird how I can be present but not actually there. I try and make a smile on people's face everyday because I wish I could smile like that. Complimenting a random person's shirt, or telling the cashier to have a wonderful day. I know what it's like to be stuck in this and we all don't know what people are going through in their life. We fake a smile and laugh..but in reality we are dieing inside. Screaming and trying to keep it all in. So if I can make someone's shitty day better by faking a smile and telling them to have a wonderful day, I will. Regardless of my own feelings. It doesn't make me feel better, but it makes others feel happiness.

It's so sad to think that the people around you take your condition as a joke. That's why it's always hard to open up coz you already know that they would just take it lightly. They think that you make it as a reason to be lazy but they don't know how hard it is that you'll going to wake up everyday with a fear that you might feel that same hell again :)

My depression seems to manifest in having very limited resources. I work and pay bills, study, try to eat healthy and get in exercise. The payoff is I don’t keep a tidy house, I don’t socialise much, I sleep lots. If I try to do any more I go under and need time to take it easy and recover. It’s not quite living but it’s as good as it gets right now

Is anyone else fighting with themselves? Like what happens when everything in your life is going right but you feel so wrong? You're a high achiever at school, you're talented, you're surrounded by people who care about you, people who support you, you have opportunities and plans. Yet you're just so tired because you've been fighting yourself and your own negative thoughts for far too long. And you know that no one could possibly understand because not even you understand. You've tried everything and you're constantly toggling between genuine happiness and the deepest, darkest sadness. And you want to cry for help because you know there are people who can help but you have so many trust issues and anxieties that you can't cry anymore. You wish they'd just notice something is wrong, but because everything in your life (except your mental health) is going right, no one notices a thing. But when someone notices you push them away but you really long for them to come back because you want to spill out all the tired that you feel. The hardest battle I've come to realize, is the battle with yourself. 😞

Does anyone feel like no matter what you do, no matter how much help you get, no matter how much people say that they love you/care for you, you just feel like you'll never get better. You'll never get out from the box you built around yourself. The water is filling up and you're drowning.. so you just...stop fighting and let it take you.. You dont want to fight anymore. You're exhausted... You feel guilty for not caring and for being exhausted. So you just close up. And you dont want to care anymore...the guilt of being depressed is eating you alive. You think about the kids who could've had a life and who would've enjoyed your life. You feel selfish...and you blame yourself for those kids not being able to live the life they dreamed about... Idk about any of you but this resonates with me so much. I'm so exhausted. I'm scared to tell my mom that...she knows I'm depressed but I feel like she doesnt listen to me. Or that she doesnt what me to..she forces me to go to school...and when I dont, she makes me feel like shit about it...she makes me feel guilty for wasting the money being put into me going to school. I feel guilty... when I tell her that my mental health isnt good, she thinks I'm just trying to get out of school. I jsut FREAKIMG WISH EVERYONE WOULD UNDERSTAND!!!! UNDERSTAND THAT IM NOT OKAY. THAT I CONSTANTLY THINK ABOUT ENDING MY LIFE. NO AMOUNT OF COUNSELLING WILL SAVE ME. NO AMOUNT OF WATER OR SLEEP WILL SAVE ME. NO AMOUNT OF EXERCISE OR MENTAL HEALTH APPS WILL SAVE ME. IM TOO FAR GONE. IM HANGING ON THE EDGE OF THE CLIFF..READY TO LET GO ANY SECOND. BUT IM STAYING, BECAUSE I WANT TO BELIEVE ILL HAVE A FUTURE. I KEEP LOOKING AND I DONT SEE ANYTHING.. WHATS WRONG WITH ME?? WHY AM I SUCH A BAD DAUGHTER?? WHY AM I SUCH A HORRIBLE SISTER?? WHY AM I SUCH A MOOD KILLER FRIEND?? IM JUST SO FCKING TIRED.

Hi there. I know that I don't know the extent of what you're going through, but I want you to know that the fact that you're still here, shows so much of your strength. ❤️ As someone who's also feeling exhausted of just about everything and feels guilty when I can't seem to enjoy the life around me, I can relate to a lot of what you said. It's hard when we just want people to understand and it feels so agonizing when we can't be understood. Please don't let go. There is a future out there for you. I know it's hard right now and it seems like there is no way out and you don't know when things will get better, but please, hang on. I may not be the best person to listen to but I am here, and I know that it's cliche to say but, you're not alone. I am the eldest child in my family and one of the reasons why I still choose to hang on is because of them, especially my little sisters. Even though I feel as if I am not a good enough daughter or sister, I know how much it would hurt them if I let go. I fight for them, because a lot of the times I find it useless to fight for myself. It's never too late to be saved, and it's never too late to save. sending you hugs ❤️

I remember last year I watched another video from Psych 2 Go about depression and it lightened my head around my symptoms. I was struggling so much and I needed someone to open my eyes, so I finally started seeing how I wasn't tired but depressed. Ever since then, I started treatment, started going to the gym, changed my job and started being productive. But of course, these videos are meant to open your mind, they are not a diagnosis.

I'm recovering from SH and depression. It's been alot recently, but reading comments of people that experienced almost the same things as me is reassuring in a way. It makes me feel that I'm not alone. This video is really informative and not only people with depression or people that thinks they have it can learn from but also normal people that may be friends with a person with depression. Having this as a reference to it is really helpful on how you can help the people around you that you may suspect has it. Remember, just being there for someone is already doing something. Sometimes people don't seek for someone to talk to, but someone to listen.

As someone with diagnosed severe depression, few things really helped me a lot 1- Talking to a pyschiatrist to determine you will need anti depressants needed or not (mileage varies person to person). My doses were stabilised after two months. They dont work fast and they take a time of few weeks to work, but it give you enough ability to understand what's going on and helps to solve a lot of things that might have bothered you for years, my mental fog cleared up a lot 2- Pick a hobby that you wanted to work on but never did. Trying to learn something new, like a instrument or learning to draw or learning to solve a rubik's cube etc, really helped me keep dark thoughts at bay and keep myself occupied 3- Talk to your friends, try to go out, hang out with people, try to contact people whom you have not talked to in past few years, try new things 4- If you feel too lonely, get a pet

I don't have depression, but I am a Highly Sensitive Person. I line up with signs 2-6 and my emotions take control of me more than I take control of them. I get easily irritable, stay up very late at night, don't have any opinions on anything, and only feel joy when playing certain video games (only ones I haven't played invoke this reaction).
