7-Pin Trailer Wiring Subaru Outback

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I had to install an electric brake controller to haul a relatively heavy A-frame pop-up camper (Forest River A223HW) with my 2020 Subaru Outback Onyx XT. This video gives a brief overview of my setup, which includes a Hopkins 47180 Endurance, Redarc Tow-Pro Elite, some wiring, and 2 circuit breakers. The brake controller needs two wires run from the front cab to the trailer socket: 1 to provide 12V power to power trailer electronics, and 1 to provide the signal from the brake controller to apply the brakes. I have no affiliation with any companies and paid full price for everything shown. Thanks for watching!

I appreciate how your videos are short and to the point. When I go to YT for a how-to video, the last thing I want to do is sort through a half hour video for 3 minutes of useful info. Keep up the great videos!

Do you have enough room between the 7-pin and the hitch so you can use a hitch lock?

Where did you connect the blue brake wire under your dash? The brown wire coming off the pedal harness?

Can someone confirm the wire color that I should splice into on the brake pedal that connects to the red brake controller wire? I read brown, but didn't seem definitive!

Where did you splice into the brake light ?

Hey, I'm trying to install that redarc on my 2022 subaru. The part where you splice into the brake line, I think it's the brown wire, is hella tiny. Did you have issues splicing into that?

I was nervous but got lucky. I was prepared to go at it with a soldering iron if it didn't work.

Great video ! I have 2020 outback and am putting a 7 pin to enable me to run my reverse lights on my boat trailer ! You showed a reverse wire ! Where did you splice that wire from ? I'm having a hard time finding that wire ! Also, what color is the factory reverse light wire ?

@@BurntOnBothEnds you showed the two power wires that were wired to the front of the vehicle then you showed the reverse wire ! Where did you find this wire ?

I ran a wire into the trunk in case I ever need it, but it just terminates there.

Ok. Where did you run the reverse wire from ? Everything I'm reading is that I have to splice from the top of the rear hatch where the reverse light is !

I ran a wire from the 7-pin into my trunk. I did not tap into any reverse light because none of my trailers have them. I left the terminated wire in my trunk in case that changes.

I'm curious how your Onyx XT handled this level of towing? Currently using your videos to install my 7 pin and brake controller on my touring xt ('22) so I can pull a 2500 lb (dry weight) casita.

Just got back from another long camping trip and it’s surprisingly good. I had a problem with my brake controller where it wasn’t working this time (bad brake wire splice I think, just need to confirm my fix after soldering yesterday) and it was fine. The rear definitely sags a little but the acceleration and braking is surprisingly good. Sure a truck would be better but the Outback is so versatile.

@@BurntOnBothEnds Awesome man! I was planning to install sumo springs to help any sagging. People have said they help quite a bit.

Ruled out a Casita myself cause the new ones even the lightest model in the real world the tongue weights will exceed my 2021 Onyx XT Outback of 350 lb tongue weight. Owners report 400 to even 500+ lb when loaded on a 17ft. Good luck.
