Heißt auch "Der Teufel ist ein Eichkätzchen", je nach Region. Die Herkunft ist eigentlich noch älter als aus dem Mittelalter. Ratatösk ist das Eichhörnchen in der Weltenesche Yggdrasil der nordischen Sage. Unter dem Baum sitzen die drei Nornen, die das Schicksal der Vergangenheit, Gegenwart und Zukunft spinnen. Und das Eichhörnchen liebt es, die Nornen bei ihrer Arbeit zu stören und damit das Geschick der Menschen durcheinanderzubringen.

Danke für die profunde Erklärung. für mich war das Eichhörnchen immer nur Sinnbild für etwas "süßes", "unschuldiges" (eigentlich auch "fleißig") hinter dessen Maske sich "das Böse" verstecken kann... (s.a. "des Pudels Kern" in Goethes Faust - und beide Themen (die Ballade vom mutigen Eichhorn) hat Ulrich Roski in seinen Liedern bearbeitet... - mysteriös...:-))

I really like both "let the soul dangle" and the one about "if a person doesn't respect the penny they don't deserve the dollar." That one seems very German and very true! Have you hear the idiom "Throwing good money after bad"? It means to spend more money on something that has already failed, like you refuse to give up on a bad investment instead of walking away from it and lose more money in the process. "If you keep paying to fix that car you already spent a lot on, but it still doesn't work, you'll just be throwing good money after bad."

Hallo Trixie, interessant wie Du die Sprichworte interpretierst. "Gras über etwas wachsen lassen" ist auch die Taktik von Seriendieben, die Pause machen, um nicht erwischt zu werden. "Wer den Pfennig nicht ehrt..." ist auch eine Entschuldigung von geizigen Menschen. Ich denke da an den Schotten, der sich beim Tischler ein Angebot für das Anspitzen seines Zahnstochers holt und nach einem Tag mit den Worten zurückkommt: "Unser Verein hat entschieden: Wir machen das." Beim "Seele baumeln lassen" habe ich mich von Dir ertappt gefühlt: Ich hatte ein Bild vor meinem geistigen Auge wie ich an einem See auf einem Bootsanlieger sitze, die Beine baumeln lasse und den Sonnenübergang über dem Wasser beobachte - fast genau dass, was Du beschreibst. Ein sehr persönliches Video von Dir. Pferde würde ich nicht mir Dir stehlen, aber eine kuschelige Wolldecke würde ich Dir holen, damit Dir beim Seele baumeln lassen in der Abendstimmung nicht kalt wird :) Dankeschön.

I'm German too and I looove "Die Seele baumeln lassen". It's almost like a poem. I also really like "Leben und leben lassen" - "Live and let live", cause it conveys such an important message...

These sayings are beautiful... I loved learning the little bit of German in high school that I was able to pick up, and thanks to the inspiration from this video I'm going to start learning this awesome language again.

I loved that last one. That was deep. I don't know what it is but your voice and accent always makes me want to sit and let my soul dangle. Soothing.

I really love the depth, intelligence and poetic nature of this video. Trixi your German videos are wonderful. You show the beauty and depth of the German language that few other resources do. Thank you :-)

I think, "für jemanden eine Lanze brechen" (to break a lance for somebody) is also a very beautiful saying! :) to go in a fight for someone, to help him, to speak up for him... Surely it derives back from medieval times, where knights confronted each other in duels and wanted to impress the princess of the court. This makes the saying even more beautiful. :) It's like a window from which you can gaze into the past, like a relic...:) Excuse me for my bad school English but I hope, some of you got at least a little portion from what I've written...:S Und wieder einmal ein wunderschönes Video! :) Ich liebe es, wenn du den Menschen hier draussen zeigst, wie schön die Deutsche Sprache doch ist! :) Grüsse aus Zürich! :D

Thank you for sharing these great sayings. The first one seems somewhat Buddhist-like, and describes a state of mind that is challenging to achieve, but that can be very liberating. The second saying is equally as meaningful. In the US, we have devised a more crude way of conveying this sentiment - A friend will help you move, but a good friend will help you move...a body. This means that a friend will help you move your belongings to a new house or apartment, but a friend is extraordinary if she/helps you with a very, very tough situation; like moving the body of someone you may have 'terminated,' accidentally, or otherwise. The German expression is a bit more eloquent. Vielen dank!

I still think the best German saying is the golden rule to live by: Was Du nicht willst, das man Dir tu, das füg' auch keinem andren zu.

"Der Teufel ist ein Eichhörnchen!" is a common saying in the German military. During my time there one of my fellow commrads had this made as a tattoo. And true to the saying, something went wrong. It read "Der Teufel isst ein Eichhörnchen", "The devil eats a squirrel".

I like the last one about time especially, but I would say the saying I live by most is "luck favors the prepared". To me it means that you have to accept that things are going to go wrong sometimes and the best you can do is be ready for it.

german may sound a bit harsh, but it sure is a beautiful language. having such sayings, makes me want to learn them all.

this might be your best video. i've always been fascinated by german idioms.

Here are some sayings I live by... "Have not cause asked not" for when I feel nervous about asking a question or wanting something. "Hear to be an ear" for when people want to talk to me about their issues. "Sticks n Stones maybe Break Bones, but Names n Words causes Wars" something I tell my kids about been careful of what they say. "It's better to have and not need, then to need and not have" for the reason I am always wearing a jacket even in hot weather cause if it gets cold I have it, if it's hot I'll simply take it off, and other things.

Hi Trixi! I liked a lot your video! The two sayings that I loved most are: "Wer den Pfennig nicht ehrt, ist des Talers nicht wert." I put another perspective into that phrase, as someone who doesn't respect even the smallest things a person can offer, don't deserve those greatest things either :p And the last one "der Zahn der Zeit" instantly reminded me of Lord of the Rings xD and I find both to be totally awesome :3 I'l look for your other Sayings videos :D! Nice video! For amendment: "Die Seele baumeln lassen" originates from the novel "Schloss Gripsholm" written by Kurt Tucholsky (1931): "Wir lagen auf der Wiese und baumelten mit der Seele" (chapter 2/6).

I think the origin of the saying "mit jemandem Pferde stehlen können" lays in earlier times, when stealing a horse was a crime you'd be sentenced to death for. So if someone would join you into stealing a horse, that person probably cared about you more than about their own life. Literally, seeing as, if you got caught, you would die.

I love showing your vids to my wife (shes from Berlin) and she lost it on your accents video screaming "thats so true!"

Never thought about time that way. That's one hell of a way to describe it. The biggest threats to one's life are usually things you can't physically see or touch. Time is extremely lethal. Hopefully, one day we'll be able to take time's teeth away.

I think you made a very good selection. Personally, my favorite sayings are malaphors, or mixed idioms, such as "a stitch in time is worth two in the bush", "that's a whole different kettle of ballparks", to "chew the breeze" with someone, or "let's burn that bridge when we come to it" and so forth. I love them all! You chose some very insightful ones, Trixi. I remember Pops was chock-full of sayings, in English and German, but for the life of me I can't recall a one. On the Mexican side of the family, my grandmother had a saying I loved. (let's see if I get this right.. actually, I prefer that in Spanish too.. a ver si me lo recuerdo sin cagarme en el mar..) She'd say, "Cada bella tiene su tacha, y cada fea su gracia." Ask ol' you-know-who if I got that right. ;-) ¡Besos! Tschüss! -Phill, Las Vegas (btw, I think the Z's in Zahn and Zeit add to the saying's bite!)

Love this, beatiful the way you speak here of german as this beatiful as I sometimes see it language, although it is mostly often seen as otherwise.

"Mit jemandem Pferde stehlen können" makes me think of two phrases in English: "partner in crime," which -- when used figuratively -- refers to a friend you spend a lot of time with, doing lots of things, and having each other's back when things get rough or you need to do risky things (like, well, crime!). The other one is harder to cite so I'll just put it in a sentence: "She's the kind of friend who would help me bury the bodies" (as in, if I killed someone, accidentally or purposely, and she found out, not only would she not turn me in, but she would help me bury the body, both protecting me _and_ taking on the risk of being possibly arrested as an accomplice).

The one about stealing horses reminds me of being Geralt in Novigrad. You look super cute in this video too Gadget.

Dieser Spruch ist nicht aus Deutsch, aber trotzdem finde ich sie in Deutsch wirksamer: "Viele Leute die in vielen kleinen Orten viele kleine Dinge tun, können das Gesicht der Welt verändert."

American English has one that is akin to your saying about stealing horses - "A friend will help you move; a true friend will help you move a body" Obviously an illegal activity, but it illustrates the depth of a friendship.

I remember a saying (although it isn't beautiful), taught to me by my 3rd year German language teacher in high school: "Mehr sein als scheinen." I've always liked that one and I try to live that way.

Alles geschieht aus einem Grund. It is what I say to myself in a moment of unexpected circumstances. Yes, it is up to us to find out what that is, but the phrase provokes thought.

I like this one, it's one of my favorites, although I'm not completely sure what it means. I've been racking my brain for years for a clever way to render it in English: In der allergrössten Not schmeckt die Wurst auch ohne Brot. Can you please explain it?

Hey, "Was sich liebt, das neckt sich." is the exact translation for french "Qui aime bien, châtie bien !" And why are cute rodents' names so difficult to pronounce?! For people about my age, the first German lesson in middleschool contained "Schmetterling" and "Meerschweinchen"! No wonder most students lose hope instantly. I wanna be able to say Eichhörnchen!!!

"Der Teufel ist ein Eichhörnchen" is a poetic expression of Murphy's Law: "anything that can go wrong, will, and at the worst possible time." No one seems to know exactly who Murphy was, but the concept must have been around forever.

Interesting selection, a lot of them also have English Variations.

Dear Trixie: You keep saying bad things about your german accent, but you really shouldn't! You speak English really well. Anyone who is complaining should try to learn German as a second or third language!

Glücklich ist, wer vergißt, was doch nicht zu ändern ist!

"der Teufel ist ein Eichhörnchen" auf bayerisch: "der Deivi is a Oachkatzl"... for me just a reminder that something evil may show up in something cute and innocent... "shit happens" was replaced by Murphy's law in the 1990s: "whatever may go wrong will go wrong" and "if there are several possibilities to fail, the most catastrophic and most expensive will occur"... :-) for "die Zeit heilt alle Wunden" (time heals all your wounds) there is an extension: "die Zeit ist ein hervorragender Heiler, aber 'n lausiger Kosmetiker" (time may be a great healer but it's a lousy beautician). instead of "Gras über eine Sache wachsen lassen" there is a modern variant: "weniger 'vergeben und vergessen', mehr 'vergraben und verrotten lassen'" (less 'forgive and forget', more 'bury and let decay') - actually i'd prefer "more 'forgive and forget'" (cute combination of "give" and "get" in Englisch - whereas "vergraben und verrotten" just sounds similar to "vergeben und vergessen"...) but deep in our "human" soul there seems to be a need to have and hide "eine (oder mehrere) Leichen im Keller" (one (or serveral) corpses in the basement) - where the "corpse in the basement" just stands for any dark secret...

The stealing horses meme reminds me of an American one that says something like, someone who would help you hide a body (presuming that you had killed someone). Your English is particularly good and American today. Extra cup of coffee? (I lived in Germany for nearly three years and took German in school before and after and never got anywhere near as good as your English! (I'm an American).

Hey some of my favorite words in german are Bierdeckel (why is it called Bierdackel? you put the glass on it, so why its called deckel?) and there is the (i translate it to english, i think you might get it ;) "to have cabbage-steam" and a nice little kitchen tool, the snow-broom!

I think it is called "Deckel" or "cover" because, when sitting in a beer garden, you can inverse the positions of glass and bierdeckel so that it covers the opening of the glass and protects the beer from falling leaves, chestnuts (a beer garden has or should have chestnut trees), micrometeorites, insects, saliva from your neighbours and worst of all, in case it is raining, water.

Beautiful and interesting sayings, but I never heard any of them when I was in Germany. I never heard other phrases like "Ach du lieber" or "Gluck und glas, wie bald bricht das." I never discussed philosophy with any Germans, I suppose.

kauf mal ein micro oder sowas, oder probier mal n bisschen mit audiofilter herum. das klingt sehr stark nach einem billigen mikro zu einer guten bildqualität und verzerrt deine schöne stimme ein bisschen. außerdem finde ich es gut, dass du hier keine hintergrundmusik hast, jedoch wäre es überlegenswert gewesen ein paar dinge mit leiser hintergrund musik (zB wenn die sprichwörter an sich sagst) unterstreichst. Ich weiß nicht genau was mich am audio stört aber etwas passt nicht

Es bedeutet, dass man egal wie schlecht und scheiße es einem auch gehen sollte, man darf niemals aufgeben. Irgendwann kommt der Tag, an dem sich alles zum Besseren wendet. Der grimmige kalte Winter, der einen auffressen will geht vorüber und sobald man wieder die Sonne sieht, scheint sie für einen um so heller. What do you think?
