7 Mistakes on Starting Your Art Business

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

There are so many misconceptions when it comes to becoming an artist. Many believe that once you quit your day job and become an artist, all these real world problems will go away. This is only half true. Running your own art business is just like running a business. I’d like to point out 7 most common deadly mistakes artists make when starting their art business.

    1. Being Impatient. 2. Not knowing your role. 3. Not willing to invest in yourself. 4. No marketing budget. 5. No Accounting knowledge (on filing taxes) 6. Doing it alone. 7. Undermining the matrix.

    I love these type of videos because it lists every single thing that I do NOT wanna do to be a money-making artist (art business). I love art and have studied it professionally at four different schools, including Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA. For me (I can't speak for everyone), the business end has become such a turn off and emotionally and even physically draining, because I've been homeless multiple times while chasing this so called dream, that I've made a clear decision that I would rather continue my 9-5 job instead. I'd rather and need guaranteed consistency when it comes to success and pay. I've realized that I'm MUCH MUCH happier not dealing with literally anything art related anymore. I'm personally bitter (I can't lie), BUT I'm happy seeing other artists not giving up like I have and are still working on their success! Just because this has become my ending, doesn't mean that I want others to give up, also! 😁

    Hi Chris, totally understandable! My parents are both in art (performing arts) and I grew up with this dream of becoming a poet and playwright. But I am not going to pursue it because I need the financial security. Being a starving poet? Well, it might be courageous and hell-of-a-ride, but this route is not for me. I’d rather put my dreams aside so I can be financially liable.

    Thanks for making this video. I just typed "art business" in and was looking for videos more like this one, but there are so many other videos that don't talk about the technicalities and challenges that come with starting a business. I'm taking notes! Thank you!

    Thanks for your message! I'd like to cover as much as possible! However artists in different state/region/country face different realities when it comes to opening their own business. What are the challenges you face? I'd like to know and discuss them in the upcoming videos!

    @@VeryPrivateGallery Hey! Same Alissan here! My situation is very different than most's because I don't have a job, I don't have an education, I am stepping into this completely blind. So the difficulties I'm facing right now are just knowing where to begin, how to plan for the future, what I should be doing with my art and how that will effect the overall projection of the art business. I have people I can rely on but they don't have very much money and so it's a very big risk I'm taking by starting this pursuit but I know this is what I was meant to do (or I hope) because it fills me with a lot of happiness and I have a message to spread. The one thing I have going for me is that I'm still fairly young and so I have a lot of time to make mistakes and learn from those mistakes. I'm taking 30 days to learn about the art business and to do market research and get any information that could help me in the coming year. I've watched some of your other videos and I already have a plan to create a couple of art series so that if I get into an art gallery or someone likes my art I am prepared and taken seriously as a professional. I want to be taken seriously and know what I'm talking about so that those who would ridicule me or make speculations about what I'm doing will know that this isn't just a whim - this is a lifestyle for me. Thank you for sharing your knowledge I think it's very good general advice!

    Before you cross the street you need to look both ways. On one side are the pros and the other side are the cons. If you're looking only at one side, say the pros, the cons will run over you. If you're looking only at the cons, you'll likely never have the courage to take the first step in crossing the street. And that is why I appreciate your video here; it gives me a view of the cons. I have to look both ways so I can judge for myself whether or not striking out on my own and building my own business is worth the risk. And there's a LOT of risk involved for me-I'm starting out with NOTHING.

  • @VeryPrivateGallery

    Haha I like the “look at both ways” analogy. Because so many people are looking at their mobiles while crossing the street, local authorities in the town where I live have painted the streets with warning signs. I am guilty of not looking while the light is green - I am accompanied by other pedestrians and I trust the rules. But things could still potentially go wrong. It’s like selling on large platforms like Saatchi Art. It looks like a green light, good to go. Many people are going there too. The marketplace is regulated by company laws etc. However, things can still go wrong. Nowadays we need to be courageous enough to take the steering wheel and agile enough to get off at any moment and run for our lives. Not easy!

    Is there any room in Art Careers where you can include medias that are related to comic books? Also how do you make a plan for starting a business?

  • @VeryPrivateGallery

    @VeryPrivateGallery

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi David, you can use comic style drawings but it might be “discounted” for pop art. I don’t know the right word in English to describe this, but it’s difficult to make it into the world of contemporary art using popular media elements (except for pop art). It is not impossible but difficult.

    Contemporary art is very elitist and exclusive. And now with the pandemic it is slowly becoming irrelevant in some ways. I think you can create your own thing, like a mesh up of some kind.

    Galih Ayu For example, I use Keyword everywhere (now paid) for SEO trends and the TubeBuddy (free version) for KZread trends. There isn’t one stop shop for all social media. You need to get different plug-ins to get the best out of these apps.

    You had my full attention until "the matrix". I've been a full time working artist for forty years; first as a 'painter - illustrator', and now as a gallery artist. The business of being an artist differs from running a business in that you are also the manufacturer. The one exception I have here is for an artist to put their finger into the wind to see what sells. That's the creative kiss of death. Yes, to a young artist I say look at everything, try everything, but it may take a long time to discover who you really are. Understand what painting really is, and strive for your best; not only what you think will sell. Oh, and that camera - that's a tax deduction...
