7 Levels You Get in Basically Every Game

Ойындар

Games can take us to so many places, but amidst these diverse locations there are a handful of ‘classics’ in which we wind up over and over. The end result is they’re more familiar than your childhood home, but without all the dead pets in the garden. Point your face at sewer levels, factory levels, nightclub levels and lava levels galore, then subscribe for a week like this every Thursday.
The sewer level is so commonplace as to be a veritable tradition; we find ourselves splashing into a sewer with more regularity than the stuff which makes sewers so unpleasant in the first place, in games as disparate as Wolfenstein 2, Deadpool, Resident Evil 4, Dead Island and Gears of War, to name but a few.
You don’t have to be a wastewater engineer to estimate how much ick is involved in sloshing around in the figurative and also kind of literal bowels of a city, or how many showers you are going to need after all your sewer spelunking. Looking at you, Blazkowicz.

As far as prison levels go Dishonored did really well. You start out in prison with no gear or powers which forces you to learn the raw combat &/or stealth mechanics. Down the line in the Flooded District level you’re in the same situation BUT you have your powers, which is a round about way to reward the player for exploring to collect Runes.

I feel like a lot of games like to include the level in which everything is dark and you have to rely on torches or a magical glowing object to explore. Sometimes the dark is just annoying to navigate without light or other times there's something in the darkness that will kill you if you stay in the dark for too long. Bonus points if you can't fight while holding whatever light source you have to bring with you. A few games with a part like this would be Ori and the Blind Forest: Definitive Edition, Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice, and Kirby Triple Delux.

Complete with incessant climbing, springtraps, nonspecific ancient architecture and the occasional Indiana Jones reference. Special mention goes to Sonic the Hedgehog, where across the series Angel Island somehow has Egyptian, Mayan AND Greek ruins up there right next to each other just waiting for Sonic to run through.

i think this hints at the problem with "water levels" in games in general, they're often just an afterthought, they throw it together, it's cheap and gimmicky, it's really just an oxygen timer, unless it's one of those games that lets you breathe underwater, which defeats the whole point of water in the first place, imo... they don't really care to put the time and effort into doing it right the way Subnautica had to...

Up to this point the game has drip fed you with an arsenal of hyper-advanced tech, gadgets and support giving you the edge in firefights. Then your convoy is ambushed and you are there, a single solider with your rifle and nothing else. It was a massive change of pace in the game and sticks with me as a highlight to this day

Across the game altogether, in the first game alone you have the sewer, underwater, and lava levels. In DMC (the alternate universe one) there's a sewer, night club, prison, and factory level. Now that i think of it further, there always seems to be a sewer level in Devil May Cry games....guess it just means devils always dwell on the lowest levels, lol

I've designed one game where you actually start out in a prison, but the reason you don't really have any equipment is because... well, the game just started. You have your default weapon in hand (literally, as it's a magic ring). Also, there's no need to figure out how to get out of the prison per se... it's the same concept as finishing any other level in the game. Your cell is unlocked by default and you can just stroll out at your leisure. This is because, as described in the SKIPPABLE story that precedes the first level, one of the Minions Of The Big Bad Guy (tm) turned face and unlocked your cell.

The worst level of all. Occurring in almost every video game. Often unskippable. Stripping the player of their basic controls. One so bad the gaming community have given it its own harrowing name... The Tutorial!

How else are you supposed to know that the analog stick that controls movement in every game also controls movement in your game?

This was me playing a rented copy of The Witcher 3 a few days ago. "Hmm I wonder how many healing items I have left." (Opens Inventory and tries to move cursor) "...why is nothing happening? The hell? Did the game freeze?" (notices the white message in the bottom right) "Oh goddamnit, JUST LEAVE ME ALONE!"

What about the travelling on a speeding thing (train, bus, car, transport) trying to fight enemies whilst not falling off / speeding thing being blown up level... it's hard enough to do that on a normal train without the fighting enemies part!

I agree with Varun Chaturvedi and Respectable AF in that a train level is fairly ubiquitous. I guess this is for the designers to show you how they can make scenery move past whilst you're essentially staying put; and also to provide a claustrophobic environment which involves you going from one end of the damn thing to the other. I can remember that one of the Tomb Raider games, Silent Hill 2, an early Final Fantasy (in which you ended up fighting it!) and a much later Final Fantasy game (in which the train was frozen) used this mechanic. Probably many, many more.

ice levels with christmassy music are the literal worst, especially if they have slippy slidey Ice Physics that never work like they should.

These are 100% true and good picks. I'd also add some sort of a lab as being a very common level and also some type of structure like a palace or machine in the skies.

The rescue level also known as the level where you either infiltrate stealthily/break in and help someone escape or the level where someone breaks you out themself COD WAW, COD AW, Metal Gear Solid: The Phantom Pain etc

The Variable Gravity level. Not only is it a cliche but it's prone to poor design choices like if your character inverts so do your controls leading to a good 5 minutes of you *relearning* the control scheme...in reverse.

I would like to add some kind of tomb level. No matter what you're playing, there's always a chance that the game will, at some point, lead you into a moldy old barrow where you have walk among moldy, desiccated corpses, maybe contend with some undead and/or booby traps. Alternatively, you have graveyard-levels.
