THIS STORY:
Carlotta J. Thompkins, a.k.a Lottie Deno, was a famous gambler in Texas and New Mexico during the 1800's. She was renown for legendary poker skills - as well as her courage. She was protected by her intimidating 7 foot tall slave woman Mary Poindexter.
She was born in Kentucky and traveled a great deal among the saloons and casinos, before coming to Texas. In the late 1800s, she was Texas' most famous poker player. Her escapades during this period became part of the folklore of the American Wild West.
THIS CHANNEL:
_________________________________________________________
The Angel face you see is the Haserot, named “The Angel of Death Victorious". The stoic angel is seated on the marble gravestone of canning entrepreneur Francis Haserot and his family. Holding an extinguished torch upside-down, it represents a symbol of life extinguished. Wings are outstretched and the gaze is straight ahead.
IN THE END, DEATH ALWAYS WINS. LEST THE FACES NOT BE FORGOTTEN...
This channel is focused on casually walking and viewing a handful of the thousands of forgotten names and faces at various cemeteries near and afar. Seeing their faces up close. And when able, telling the stories behind their names.
Most graves are unknown and lost to history.
Some are famous.
And some infamous....
....and some with tragic endings.

Thank you Ron for this great story!!! The wild west sure was good time to be in for gambling except I think there were many chances people took. The trust had to be there so you didnt end up dead. Imagine meeting Doc Holiday!!! Frank and Lottie did well with their earnings by helping others. Thanks for putting 2 more forgotten faces to the forefront to be remembered another day!!!! Hope you are enjoying your vacation and we do appreciate the time you took to feed our hunger for a story Ron. ❤❤

I love your comment. This is exactly what I’m trying to do - I’m sick and tired of everybody doing the same old stuff over and over of the usual characters. I’ve got some more good stuff coming up, many of these more unknown characters’ stories are even more intriguing than the ones told over and over.

Ron, you made a homerun with this one. It impresses me that there were some women who had to takes chances in order to locate their real calling. Even if the chnage they took was due to circumstance beyond their control, especially during the period of time. It demonstrates a woman's resolve and re-invention of herself. What a great story with so many twists and turns. She was a tough lady for sure. Didn't seem to be afraid of much. Her dad taught her well. I wonder what she would have done with her life if she had a different dad. I love her love story to. It's like the Romeo and Juliette of the wild west. I would have never guessed that it would end in a reunion with Frank Such a crazy life and suddenly here they were wonderful outstanding citizens. I guess in the end that's all that really matters. I wish we could find Mary's grave too. She was a hero, and it would be great to know more about her life after Charlotte. I loved Miss Kitty. She was my favorite character on Gunsmoke. It's awesome to see the real-life version. Ron, once again you out did yourself with this one. How you find these incredible, intriguing and fascinating stories is beyond me, but I do know that we are the luckiest viewers on YT to get to hear you tell them in the most compelling way. You sure have a knack for storytelling. You are gifted that way! RIP to Frank, Charolette and Mary too ❤💐

A very interesting and lively story. I find it very ''ordinary'' (it's what we say in Quebec for a lack of luster) to see a cement block with a name on it and nothing else. Everyone lives their lives, yes, but this woman has a history and there should be a notation somewhere at the grave site, no? Thank-you FOF for letting us know about this woman with a twist, and ''Mary'' ... Have a great day! 🙂

Never heard of this person that had so much notoriety in the night life of the old West. I'm amazed at how people that acquired a name and reputation crossed paths throughout the old West. Fort Griffin being a magnet for Billy the Kid and supposedly his resting place. Another interesting and informative episode. Nice gesture leaving a yellow Rose. BTW, Doc was from Georgia and a wealthy family so I'm sure they hit it off.
