THIS STORY:
He left behind a wife and several children. Supposedly, he died with a fear of catching sleeping sickness, which would give the illusion of death, later to awaken in a cold, dark grave, very much alive.
According to the feature article, there are other legends about the tomb. One is that Smith had it outfitted with “tools for his escape.” Although condensation and plant growth inside the shaft now block one’s view, residents in years past claimed to see the tools along with Smith’s bones. Said one, “You can see the face of the skeleton down there with a hammer and chisel crossed on the ground next to it” (Marquard 1982). Another source claims that when Smith was interred, “In the corpse’s hand they placed a bell that he could ring should he wake up and find himself the victim of a premature burial”

The Angel face you see is the Haserot, named “The Angel of Death Victorious". The stoic angel is seated on the marble gravestone of canning entrepreneur Francis Haserot and his family. Holding an extinguished torch upside-down, it represents a symbol of life extinguished. Wings are outstretched and the gaze is straight ahead.
IN THE END, DEATH ALWAYS WINS. LEST THE FACES NOT BE FORGOTTEN...
This channel is focused on casually walking and viewing a handful of the thousands of forgotten names and faces at various cemeteries near and afar. Seeing their faces up close. And when able, telling the stories behind their names.
Most graves are unknown and lost to history.
Some are famous.
And some infamous....
....and some with tragic endings.

That has always been my fear to be buried alive.I’m so claustrophobic Nowadays most people are embalmed but if you die in a car accident where your face is so messed up you can’t have an open casket I’m sure they don’t always embalm people. I told my son I don’t care how I die make sure I’m embalmed!

This may sound wrong of me, but it would be quite an easy job for the correct department to remove that glass and replace it with a clear mega strong new piece. After all it was the deceased person's wish that the glass be there. I'm sure they would have approved if done respectfully. Think about it: if your glasses were dirty, would you appreciate someone cleaning them for you?.

When my 38/39 year old son passed I asked to see his body before they prepared him for the funeral. In my opinion he looked so beautiful in death. It was sad yet peaceful and somewhat joyous. Of course then they prepared him for the viewing and my son did not look at all like my son. I preferred the way he looked before they manipulated his face and put the make up on him. I wish people could have seen him in his natural death state. I’m sorry if that seems morbid, it’s just a part of what happens as we pass from this life into the next. I’m so glad I viewed my son before they touched him. Yes I took pictures and cherish them.

I did the same with my mom, I was lucky to spend a good hour with my mom immediately after she was found and she looked so beautiful and had passed away with a peaceful smile on her face and it was comforting to know that she didn’t suffer and was really chilled out. We had the option of seeing her before her funeral and it was a shock to say the least, she just didn’t look like our mom, we had to literally look at an angle near her head to see her, but me and my sister changed her hair as I had asked them to curl her hair and paint her nails in her favourite nail polish colour. We also took a pair of high heel red “dolly” shoes as my mom was a real shoe addict when she was younger and was gutted when she had to stop wearing them. So we made sure she went looking her best and we put her favourite tea cup and a tea bag and put photos and messages in her coffin. Her skin was still so soft even in death so I gave her a kiss before we left. It was a massive shock but we were so glad we both went to say a private goodbye to my mom. She was cremated which was a shame because of the messages etc but we knew that she was beautiful and all done up and at least in our eyes she would look amazing even up in heaven, and we wanted her to look her best. We put her beautiful suit on that she wore for my wedding 2 years prior and her neighbour had crocheted a beautiful shawl which was placed over here. Then we had her favourite football club shirt over her coffin and we went past all of her favourite places including her favourite shop where she regularly went shopping and met friends for dinner. People shopping that day were very shocked and I know our mom would have killed us for doing that but we knew she would be laughing at us. We also knew that some of her friends would be there. The mad thing was that on the day a man had to step in on his day off as someone was ill, his name was Troy and my moms main song was from the film “Troy” and he was originally from Chelsea which was my moms favourite football club. He came over to us after her funeral and asked if we believed in fate and we said yes and he said that it had never happened to him before in all his years of working but he believed that mom had made sure that he was there that day. He was honestly so spooked by it, and I said “well that was our mom for you, and we always said that when she passed she was to let us know if she was watching over us and with us” and boy she did and that gave us a lot of comfort at the end of the day and the man just couldn’t get over it, bless him but yes I am glad I went to see my mom and luckily I remember her when she passed and I’ve blocked the image of my mom in the coffin due to the shock, but I am so glad me and my sister had those last moments with her. It made it so much easier for us and helped us heal. That was just over 3 years ago now x

@@lisagreenway8410I’m so sorry about your mom. I really enjoyed reading her story. I’ve told my kids when my time comes to put pictures of me on the casket and don’t have it open. People lie to make the family feel good when they say how good they look. Plus I don’t want all that done to my face. My grandma was one of the first to get breast implants when they came out with silicone. She was in her early 20’s. She never had to wear a bra after that. And that’s what she wanted. She would have been so proud because they stood up perfectly & perky in her casket. 😂 When my mother in law passed 2 years ago from a 5 year battle with colon cancer that spread my kids put some of her fav things in her casket. They put a tube of chapstick in each hand because she was obsessed with it. We found chapstick all over the house and her vehicle. My kids said when it comes my time they are going to start the funeral but have them roll me in 10 minutes late because I’m always late! I was even as a kid. My whole life I’ve been told I’d be late for my own funeral. I told them if they didn’t do it I would haunt them! 😂 I also love to make people laugh. I told them I’d rather people laugh at my funeral rather than cry.

As a kid, there used to be a grave close to my Uncle's house with a partial glass top. You could actually see the man's face. And he was buried with the axe he was using when a tree fell on and killed him. As time went on, all his features were obscured with mold until they finally painted over the glass top. We kids used to go look at "William" whenever I visited. I think the grave has been moved somewhere else, as it was in a farmer's field. This was all over 60 years ago

The intense, blinding insanity that would overtake anyone buried alive that awoke before the oxygen ran out is one of the most awful things imaginable. Waking in pitch blackness, dead quiet, barely room to move. I'd assume most people would be able to feel the plush inside of a coffin and realize where they were just before the total insanity set in. Defies description.

I was there in the summer of 2021. I saw the exact grave you’re referring to. There is also a gravesite that has a small stairwell going down to where a little girl was laid to rest. The story goes is that when she was alive, lighting terrified her. So the family had a window (now blocked in) made in to the head of the tomb. When the lighting struck, the grieving mother would go down the staircase and read to her little girl.

When stones are tall and narrow like the ones you’re seeing there, they had to bury 1/3 of the stone in the ground for support. So if you see a 4 foot stone, 2 feet of it is underground. Stones of that nature are no longer allowed in cemeteries in England and I’m not certain about here in America. As the ground settles, they tend to shift, tilt, sway, and sometimes because of the stress they just break off. There has to be a special footing 2 to 2 1/2 feet underground to support the stone, but even then there can be instability.

I worked at a mortuary in the cremation department for a year while going to school. Many folks who passed asked a friend or relative to confirm that they were dead before we moved forward with the cremation process. Some would ask us to call them just before we started. Others would come in, verify the body and push the start button themselves. FYI - The cost of a basic cremation and urn varies between $800.00 and $3,300.00...

So that's the average cost of a cremation with an urn included? I guess that's still kinda cheap vs the usual cost of a full funeral service. Around here in Oklahoma in my towns cremation might go for around $600 give or take 🤷. I know I'm doing cremation for myself and a memorial service if my family wants to do that.

My brother in law is the mortician who took care of our daughter's final wishes. While we were always told she would never live to see 40 due to the type 1 diabetes & family history of early death with it (I kept my promise I made her mother on her death bed & adopted her daughter who was 10 at the time. Her bio mother was 40 & 2 years before my daughter died she lost her bio brother to the thing in his early 40's. My daughter was 31. All went within a year of losing their leg. Their cardiovascular systems were that if people in their 70's & 80's ) Bless my brother in law though, my daughter was so terrified of being cremated alive that he promised to sit with her for 12 hours before the procedure. There was a picture of his face in black and white on porcelain attached to his grave stone. It was a old grave . But the picture was mint condition. Something compelled me to always walk by that grave. I told a friend about it , then took her there, Lighting Hit that picture and ruined the picture. This happened in Marion, Illinios.

I am terrified at that too. I could not even do a MRI. I’d like to see a video on the newest way people are being buried. The natural compost way. Also, another video would be a series on the elaborate graves that spared no expense with their final resting places. Also, I would like to say that my mother passed away this year on 02-14-2023. Valentins day. One of the best “gifts” she left me was that she had ALL her arrangements made down to the smallest detail. All paid in full. When things like this happen, the family is in such a emotional state, but it’s hard to decide, pay for, have everything your loved one wanted done. She was 93 and would’ve been 94 on 02/25/2023. We buried her on her birthday. I can’t tell you what a relief it was to have everything arranged and that’s what I want to do for my husband and children. I think that’s very important that people know this. Of course she comes from the times when people did that. t’s such a crazy world people don’t even think about their final arrangements anymore. She left me the best inheritance ever…… not money, not real estate …… her thinking of her loved ones and taking care of her arrangements. It was a beautiful service.

In my country we had this one nobelman and great philantropist, who lived in the 18th and at the beginning of the 19th century and was very interested in the problem of people buried alive - even those who couldn't afford such elaborate coffins. He sponsored a hospital and there was a special protocol for a dead body to be kept under a close watch for any sign of life. This nobelman was inspired by a cruel thing that happened to his brother. He was burried alive in a family crypt and when the crypt was opened again, he was found on the stairs with the signs of starvation. The nobelman was shaken to the core by this and he tried to find a way to prevent it to ever happen again to anyone else.

Shortly after midnight, me her sister & youngest daughter were there, they turned off the machine, she was gone in a less than 2 minutes by my reckoning. I know this, I told my family & every one else. Do not expect me to "pull the plug" for any one, ever again. Nothing romantic, nothing great, nothing nice at all. I know she was extremely ill fought 7 yrs, was in excruciating pain, etc. But I will never take that responsibility again. It still bothers me. So much so, I haven't even tried to have another relationship, in 7 yrs. I know my wife is no longer in pain, no more constant visits to the several specialist, etc. So there's that.

At least I've got my grandkids 13, 12, 7. They're all wonderful, but the youngest, she's something else. She's having me teach her guitar, & how to do maintenance on them, as well as repair. There's a German luthier on You Tube, a lady, who she loves to watch build, as well as an older man who builds & repairs. Of course Roblox is still the King!!!

Wow, absolutely amazing. I also, truly, appreciate the old world & the souls that passed through it. Can you imagine that every soul buried in the cemetery experienced many, many, many different experiences and situations. If only we could access our memory banks after desth, and have our lifetime played out on our headstones for others to experience as well. Last summer, I lost both of my uncles, they were brothers, 8 days apart from each other. The oldest brother passed away first, in my home, from a heart related condition. We had his wake, and his burial was 7 days later. The day after we buried him, his brother passed away, from a heart related condition as well. He literally couldn't take the desth of his older brother, he was such a kind hearted, sweet soul - he had survived being hit by multiple cars & an RTA bus in his lifetime.. he was (we believe) autistic, couldn't read or write much at all. He was the definition of pure hearted, in his early 70's. He never harmed a fly, he cared for all living and nonliving of this earth, even his older brother who was not such a good soul.. unfortunately, my 12 year old daughter witnessed his death, it was quite gruesome, he main artery to his heart basically exploded.. before i could make it to the house to clean up his blood, she had hurriedly cleabed it so our 90 yr old grandmother would not have to see it. I had finished cleaning his blood, boy did it break my heart. I was the closest to him in our family, besides my daughter, i had cherished him immensely, i would have given my remaining 50-60 years of life, so that he could have had just 1 more year. Unfortunately, we cannot afford to pay for either of my uncles gravestones, actually we are being sued by the funeral home (which hosted both of our uncles funerals, though they were buried in separate cemeteries for financial reasons). Somehow, the funeral home added extra charges onto the bill after the fact, and now in our grief, my family is trying to figure out how to help my mother, their youngest sibling, pay for the remaining, added charges. All I wish & pray is to one day be able to have a headstone for my uncles. I guess I'll figure it out 1 day, I'm only 30 yrs old, I've got (hopefully) an entire lifetime to figure it out for my uncles. Thanks for reading this far, I just needed to vent I guess, as these past 10 months I've just been in shock at the sudden loss of both of my uncles.

The Bible says death is like a sleep and the dead know nothing. There is no need to worry about a loved one who has passed away. They are resting peacefully in the grave. They are not in pain. They are not somewhere else being tormented. They are simply waiting in the grave until Jesus comes back.

Awesome! My brother and l have been in some old grave yards back in the 1970s on summer vacations with our parents in North Carolina’s. The graves were old there too. We chatted with some people who were looking at some family also and they told us that back in the early 18 hundred’s their was a terrible fever and some of these families graves had dates on them where the mother was the last to go. She buried 11 children and her husband all in about 3 month’s, maybe more. I cried for her because as a mom myself I couldn’t imagine doing what she had to do knowing she was also going to die. Her grave stone, like all the others were small and she had a stillborn in her arms in that casket. I wish I could remember the name of the place and grave yard. I just wanted to share this story. My brother died in 2011 at the age of 50, way too soon. He would of remembered the name of the town and where the cemetery was. Stay safe and thank you for sharing many great stories.

Well done as always!! I have visited Dr. Smith's grave myself. Just as FYI: The bubbles or "condensation" on the underside of the glass are most likely dimples caused by the force of gravity over the past 130 years.

It would have to be condensation, glass doesn't drip or sag like that even after 1000 years. Moss is a wet plant and the heat from the sun would make it very humid inside that grave, hence the condensation.
